I was fortunate to meet Sir Stirling at corporate event in the late 1980's and stood talking to him for ten magical minutes. He made me feel so at ease whilst I asked him questions he had probably heard a thousand times before. In his view Fangio was the best followed very closely by Jim Clark.
I read Jenks’ report of the race when I was a kid, about 10 or so, and I wanted to become a writer from that day. I met Moss a couple of times, once coming out of the Farningham public house on the day of the Redex Trophy in 1960 at Brands. I was with my dad on his motorcycle combination and on seeing him, my dad drove into the car park to get a better look. Moss came over to us and talked to my dad about the bike’s chair, which he’d built himself. The bloke with Moss, who hadn’t come over, was looking impatient and Moss said he’d got a couple of races to drive that day and excused himself. I said that we were on our way to watch him. Moss told my dad to present himself at the entrance to the paddock and we’d be shown around. As we approached it, my dad said that Moss might well have forgotten as it was a big race so not to get too upset, but no. There was a very pleasant chap, sitting in a chair reading a newspaper, who stood up at our approach and then showed us around, pointing out various drivers and other famous people, and even introducing us to one or two. Fabulous day. Imagine how I felt, seeing Moss in the #7 Scaglietti-bodied SWB 250 GT Ferrari, resplendent in blue, with a white stripe, drifting it through Clearways and beating the Ferrari Breadvan. No wonder I remain a motor sport fan, into my dotage as well. I told my schoolmates I’d spoken with Moss but they didn’t believe me. I was surprised at how upset I was when I heard of his death. I’m still writing.
Jenks, was is and always be a legend! The man's attention to detail was impeccable!. If you were fortunate to read DSJ's accounts of the Grand Prix, you would know. Sir Stirling Moss was our ultimate hero when we were kids. My brothers and I thought that he was the king of the race track. Both these gentlemen should be remembered forever!!
John Fitch, the American, had a terrific race here being 5th overall and first in the Standard Sports Class. I like to wonder how he would have done with Jenks (originally his navigator) and driving a 300 SLR instead of the more subdued 300 SL! We'll never know. I have a '55 Mille Miglia poster signed by both Moss and Fitch and beautifully framed in wood and leather. Any offers?
Who could ever forget Fangio, a master of his craft, especially in the style of race the Mille Miglia is as he was blooded into motorsport in exactly that style of racing in Argentina. Mercedes-Benz had at that time the best combination of the 2 best drivers in the world and, without any doubt whatsoever, the best machinery in racing. '722' is without doubt the best engineered racing sports car of all time.
Last of the great British racing drivers. Mansell. Clark. Surtees. Modern drivers wouldn’t have the courage or natural ability to achieve this and stay alive. Hail Moss.
@@aydankhaliq2967 Nor I!! Jimmy Clark was without doubt the best of all but he came along later than Moss for me and so, my 'hero' was always Moss. Jimmy could race a Lotus Cortina on a Saturday and a Lotus Formula 1 car on the Sunday, he was just unbeatable.
Had the pleasure a couple of times driving the 300SL gullwing on the public roads I think Stirling reconnoitred the Mille Miglia in - a long time ago, a real brute of a car with a gearbox like a truck 😉also a tendency for the tail end to come round on you and put you in hospital at best !
I met Sir Stirling twice at Shelsley. He was the most down to earth 'normal' hero i've met, unlike Mansell who was a right miserable git! Said hello and shared a few words with John Surtees and approached Denis as he had got on his bike, again at Shelsley, but the evil look he gave me at about five feet away made me walk straight past him. I think he wanted to mentally prepare for his run and not speak to some oik! At least i hope it was something like that and nothing personal 😁
Fangio fue mejor en un F1 pero Stirling mas completo (en Sports quedaba casi siempre delante de él) y en rallys ganaba y llego a quedar 2⁰ en Montecarlo. Creo que Stirling Moss ha sido el mejor conductor de la historia.

He was also driving with 7 cylinders due to a fuel pump issue!

Stirling gives full credit for the "toilet paper roll" to his sidekick Jenkinson, but in reality it was designed by the great John Fitch!
Sterling Moss was the greatest driver never to win a championship i was fortunate to see him drive at Silverstone.
