I saw Jorbs at the shop yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and shouting “THE BOOT!” and kicking me in the shin.

Jorbs has an equal ego to LC, lets not kid ourselves. The reason Jorbs has lost his viewer-base is because he's passive aggressive to the extreme, even toward his own chat. It's not because he's being hated on by LC, or because the community on Reddit is censoring him.
I say this as someone who learned a lot from Jorbs but quickly switched when I found Baalorlord/ Xecnar, literally because of tone. Everything Jorbs says *sounds* condescending. He actively makes chat feel like idiots/ ignores them. I don't see why he still has viewers, tbh.

[Disparate comments from a long-time watcher who came to the game after finding Jorbs videos --> got addicted with hundreds of hours of play --> finally quit the habit after an A20H kill with all characters.]
    1. This is so juicy and fun as an observer. And, that's what's so toxic about it. I totally get the psychology of LC's viewers, and (similarly) eagerly watch Jorbs' videos / read his posts on this subject. It requires active moderation from both sides to prevent this dynamic, precisely because it is so compelling.
    2. All the stats arguments Jorbs makes are foundational and basic, but do require one to have an understanding of the principles of statistics. Even smart people (e.g. LC) get basic stats concepts wrong, see the history of the Monty Hall problem.
    3. From my perspective, the chat logs here underplay how toxic LC is or can be. The one time I watched an LC clip, he generalized his feelings about Jorbs into a super xenophobic rant about how Americans are stupid. He's streamed for thousands of hours, so of course this is cherry-picked, but then 'monkey runs' and 'donkey runs' really paint the picture if you think it through.
    4. Jorbs - one of the reasons I gravitated to you is because you have (or I perceive you to have) a kind of reformed arrogance that I identify with. Some MTG guys are the same way. Like, as a younger guy / person, you achieved huge success in a competitive tournament setting, realized how that led to an over-inflated ego, try to tamp that down now, and yet you still feel that sense of achievement. Same here. And, when someone comes up and impugns my ability or accomplishments or whatever, I am not gonna back down. Nor should I. Importantly though, there is a cognitive dissonance there, and I can see how that would be super annoying to talk out live everyday.
    5. I still watch every strat-talk type video about STS that you post. Not so much the runs anymore. I hear that it's annoying to engage in the community / spur discussion. But, the fact that it does spur discussion / debate is (obviously) evidence of its appeal. You have to make that tradeoff yourself, but yeah - I vote for more.

I wanna tag on to the coolheaded guy. A couple years ago I was in Jorbs’ stream watching an Ironclad run, and i randomly decided to type out that the first run that I ever won was an Ironclad run where I got unceasing top and took every anger I could find and basically went for a really jank infinite. I was joking about how bad it sounds now as an A20 player, but Jorbs took the time to read my chat, and said “Hey, it sounds like you found a strategy that won you an A0 run, and for the first steps that’s all you need!” And I just thought that was really kind of him. Most of my improvements came from meticulous study of Jorbs vods, I would pause every TH-cam video at every card choice and tell myself which card I would choose and why, and then I’d resume the video to see if Jorbs chose the same card and what his reason was. Eventually our answers got more and more similar, or if they were different I was able to more clearly articulate why I chose my card and whether I thought it was defensible or not. I have always thought of Jorbs as a kind, empathetic person, and it hurts my heart to see anyone subjected to treatment like this.

I think what pisses me off about the community response, after reading a lot of reddit comments, is the tone policing in the vein of "Oh, just ignore the drama. Take the high road jorbs. Why are you getting so upset and making such long posts whining, you're adding fuel to the fire!"
You're being harrassed and bullied by an entire community which is not only hurtful to anyone who has feelings but also has a real effect on your material conditions and your workplace conditions. "Not caring" is not an option for you.

    • @SatieSatie
      @SatieSatie 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

Yes. When you're being bullied, real life or online, "not caring" is not an option. Bullying/mobbing is NOT others having negative or differing opinions about you, it's being the target of an on-going, pervasive, psychological abuse (and sometimes even physical violence in escalated rl situations).

I do know who Lifecoach is, but having never really spent time with his stream, most of the information in this video is new to me. Based on what I'm seeing from the Lifecoach chat logs, the fact that I was unaware of this drama is a monumental achievement on Jorbs' part. On the flip side, it's funny to think that if Lifecoach had made the same efforts with his community, the drama would have fizzled long ago.

Minor issue with how you presented his stats: It is true that the average rotating winrate for his suggested class-specific winrates works out to 80%, but you have to adjust to the fact that he didn't play them all at an even split. If he always started with Watcher after a loss then I suspect you would point it out, but he played 50% more Defect runs than Watcher and you didn't account for it. For what it's worth, adjusting to this would make his expected overall winrate over his sample 78.76%. Every time you say 80% or put it in a distribution calculator you should be using this number instead.
Don't have much to add to all the other stuff, I've known the guy is a jackass for a long time.

the comparison between his behavior/claims and what you showed at the end is… enlightening and disgusting. he made a claim presenting himself as significantly better than everyone else, then actually tested it and found himself significantly worse than he was claiming. somebody finding out that their loose understanding of their skill level is quite different from their actual one isn’t a problem to me at all. its good for people to check their accuracy of understanding, and there’s only value to be gained when you realize that the difference is much more significant than you would have thought. it’s when they decide to use that understanding to shit on others that all of a sudden a lot of that grace goes out the window. the moment someone tries to beat others down using something like this is the moment I start getting pretty damn critical of it. this is gross, and I’m glad you brought this shit to light like this

I very much agree with this comment. Overall, if the conversation / comments were just left at this then there really would be no “drama”. Let people who want to play for streaks do so, and win rate maxers do the same.
I feel like the problem comes in when LC chooses to insist that he is the best, as if Jorbs is his rival. Hell, even a lot of what LC has done would be fine in the right context where there was actually a two-sided competition. However LC seems to foster a community that despises Jorbs for no good reason, while Jorbs has just asked to be left alone. Having thought about this more, this seems to be a good microchosm of a lot of facts about streaming a game like Slay the Spire that can lead to toxic situations. People watch streams for many reasons, personality and entertainment value are certainly big ones, but a lot of people - and I catch myself doing this too - want to see the best players excelling. You have to be very entertaining to succeed with mediocre skills. Projecting yourself as the best player and who always plays optimally like LifeCoach does is not primarily an ego issue like people tend to say - not that it isn't also that - but one of incentive and marketing. So many of his viewers seem to find it very important that they're watching the best streamer with the most optimal plays, which is why he constantly insists that he is exactly that. And I don't see him changing that marketing strategy any time soon, as long as it is what his audience expects and tunes in for

LifeCoach has always been "Deliberate" (slow) at strategy games when he was playing Hearth Stone he would try to take 2 minute turns when you were at most given 90 seconds. one of the most memed clips of him was in a tournament it was turn 2 he didn't even have a 2 mana card, and it still took him 45 seconds to click his hero power which had little to no downside at that point in the match. while his opponent on cam was hysterical because "It is turn 2 how hard can turn 2 be you either have a card and play it for tempo or you click the hero power and pass"

Just a side comment, not related to the main point of the video.
About the comment that nobody in any sport cares about winstreaks. That's obviously not true.
In chess, it's very common to talk about winstreaks (or, more precisely, to talk about unbeaten streaks, since draws exist and are quite common).
For example, Magnus Carlsen (former world champion) holds the current longest unbeaten streak. Ding Liren, the current world champion, holds the next longest. Before him, Mikhail Tal (another former world champion) held the record. These facts are mentioned in each player's biography.
Recently, Hikaru Nakamura (who is a top online blitz chess player), went on a 46-game unbeaten streak, and some people even accused him of cheating, claiming it is impossible.
People do care about winstreaks. Some people don't, that's fine.

I thought of a lot of reasons why I'd probably have been miserable had I actually pursued it, but I had not even considered shit like this... Sorry you have to live through this, I wish people didn't feel the need to be like that.
Anyway, you succeeded in making me watch a full 2.5 hour long video at a point where I had originally planned on going to bed and I have to say I am thankful for the fact that you still endure all this and put out content. Also good job on that community you built!

Hey Jorbs, really sorry you are going through this. I started watching you 4(?) years ago, and I have not stopped since. At first I watched because I wanted to improve at sts, but it did not take long for me to just enjoy the good vibes, funny jokes and really calm videos/streams. You are genuinely a person I look up to. I really enjoy how you have cultivated this positive and chill space for people who love jorbs and sts to hang out. Wish you the best Jorbs, your content really does make a difference for me.

It's pure game theory on maximizing his return as a streamer. You're successful with a comparative size, so he targets you. He wants as many of your subs as possible. He siphons off the [clearly] conservative viewers and others that believe bullying is a gesture of strength and entertainment - it also creates a [toxic] sense of community. Let the underdeveloped go.

I find it very weird that LC stopped playing a competitive game (Hearthstone) and started playing a non-competitive game (STS) only to be highly competitive while playing it. What I enjoy most about STS is it's non-competitive nature. The only part of the game which features a leaderboard is the Daily challenge and it's just for shits and giggles.

@@TomatoBisque In all fairness he was very good and consistent at Hearthstone. There is a video on TH-cam which explains why he quit and it's because the game became extremely difficult for competitive play when they added all the random card generation. I haven't watched him play STS cause I can't stand a 4+ h run but I bet he hates Dead Branch lol.

I mean, I can only speak for myself, but I watch your YT videos and Twitch streams because I really like your vibe, demeanor, presence, attitude, etc. The fact that you're a Slay The Spire streamer is cool, but certainly not the main reason I like your content.
I've never tried streaming or content creation, but it would seem to be really challenging to deal with this sort of thing in a mature, but assertive way. Personally, I think you're doing better than I ever could have.

This all sounds awful, sorry you had to go through that and are still experiencing it.
I have been at a work place where I came in during off hours to avoid a colleague who was verbally abusive to myself and others, it’s an awful experience.
When you were talking about how LC didn’t name you but implied he was talking about you, the first thing I had to think about was an experience you shared about how you felt awkward commenting when asked about a strategy gamer who you knew was abusing their partner. Idk and I don’t need to know if that was about him but it was the first thing that came to my mind.

Wow. Your Spireside Chats and Overexplained runs were instrumental in helping me understand the game, and I was so excited for more card breakdowns. I never understood why you stopped making them, because you seemed to enjoy them, and now I understand. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I don't get why people can't just peacefully coexist, like you seem to want to do. Your stream is always a great place to be, and no one deserves harassment like this, ESPECIALLY about a damn computer game. It's pathetic. Wishing you peace from this someday.

I'm probably one of the most casual StS players of all time, but I just got to Ascension 16 on Ironclad, a lot of which I ascribe to listening to your videos, not just for a better understanding of the game and its mechanics (I'm a classic case of playing fights badly), but for keeping me coming back to the game time after time. I hope to still be listening to your videos sometime in the distant future (and probably the afterlife) as I continue my attempts to reach Ascension 20 (and then move on to the next character to start all over again...)

Long time viewer here. I just want to say a couple of things:
    - I'm amazed how you managed to protect your community from all of this toxicity so well most of the people here (me included) don't have any idea who this Lifecoach guy is (and even know I don't really care, I'm just mad you had to endure such a toxic community alone).
    - When I arrived on your channel, I subscribed because I loved how professionally you played a game since I like to see playthrough to learn tricks and tips mostly, but at a certain point I said to my self "you know what? I like this guy": I like your professionalism, yes, but your occasional and genuine goofyness, your dry humor, how you think too. I feel protected in your community, because I know that, even if I don't agree with you on X, I KNOW that, as far as I'm respectful and I don't just say things out of my ass, I won't get assaulted and/or mocked. So really, you are probably one of my favorite youtubers, but not for how good you are at this or that game, but because I really like you as a person.
That's all. I probably won't comment ever again since I don't really like to write my opinions on the internet to people I don' really know (and because english is not my native language so everytime it takes me half an hour to write something), but this time I want to make you feel protected by your community, as you did for us.

You know, at first I wrote a “don’t worry Jorbs, I don’t even care about whoever this Lifecoach person is” comment. But other people here are right, it’s not ok that so many people are harassing you/ talking bs about you on other channels, regardless of the grade level of their bullying.
I kind of just want to go to that twitch channel and question what those people feel Jorbs did to them to warrant the vitriol. However, I don’t want to stoke any fires or start any fights with people who seem to be arguing deliberately in bad faith. So I don’t really know what do here…

I got brain damage and after someone saying something mean I could feel like I would throw up for hours, even days.
Sometimes it's really hard to experience even just quick mean messages or chats, so hearing jorbs/Stephen talk about thousands of people seeing messages talking negatively about him and many people coming to continue that in his channel sounds pretty rough.
One thing I saw in your TH-cam comment here is that you feel bad plenty, on other people's behalf too. I see that as the beginnings of an intense and hopefully mesmerising journey for you.
People are never going to all have healthy ways of bringing themselves up, maybe non of us, but don't be afraid to branch out a little, there are some wonderful souls to be found out there.

I personally really appreciate the high-school AP statistic review since apparently it's been made necessary. That was one of my favorite classes back then. I'm just saddened that it's at-all required. I've only heard snippets of all this drama, but I find it incredibly irksome that someone priding themselves on running "good statistics" seems so intent on using bad statistics to egg on a flame war.
Stay strong, Jorbs. I can only hope that someday there's proper recourse for this sort of juvenile bullying. It's not likely with the modern internet, but it's a world I'd rather live in.

    On lifecoach:
He is a German streamer/player. Started out playing M:tG pretty successfully (in RL) until he was caught cheating and was banned for two or three years by the DCI. He then moved to playing poker (I think mostly online, but I'm just guessing on that) also pretty successfully and made quite some money. He then became a streamer.
First he was known for playing Hearthstone, where he quickly created memes because he always (!) roped. Meaning that every turn (even the first one doing nothing) he took the maximum of time for his turn before he passed to his opponent. He then went on to play GWENT (I don't know why) as one of few 'big' streamers. Seems he is playing STS now...
He is extremely competitive in everything, rash and dismissive, not a particularly agreeable personality. He attracts likehearted people to his channel...
On the other hand he is very analytic and has other good qualities. I always liked that he told his chat/viewers not to donate because he had enough money for example. But to be honest I wasn't part of his community for long.
