  • My guest today is Sophie Windsor (née Winkleman), British actress, comedian, and star of the cult British TV classic 'Peep Show.' We spoke about Sophie's campaign to get screens out of schools, and for greater regulation of children's access to smartphones, and particularly online porn. In the extended version of the episode we also spoke about the effect that #MeToo has had on the acting industry, the awkwardness of working with intimacy coordinators, and why it's a bad thing that sex scenes in film and TV have become so much more explicit. To listen to the extended version go to louiseperry.substack.com

I homeschooled my kids that are now grown. I used Charlotte Mason through 5th grade with them. I read through all of her original books, which was quite a read for me at the time. It was a lovely way to educate. ❤

I love the myth about Scandinavia being "ahead of everyone else".
    That's a big fat lie.
The reason Scandinavia is ahead, is because they try new stuff first. That means the tech-disaster has already destroyed people in Scandinavia before everyone else. Denmark is the most digitalized society when it comes to public health systems and services, which is quite effective, but also very flawed and difficult for especially old people to navigate.
The size of the countries are also a big factor in terms of how much damage we have taken, and the extreme uses of tech. But Scandinavia is just "ahead" in terms of destroying themselves, and the rest of the the modern world is following swiftly! We also have some resistance now and the danish government are looking into the disaster in schools.

Scandinavians also have a tendency to be socially avoidant, so that is part of the problem... maybe every extrovert in the gene pool left in the Viking age?

I'm in my mid 30s, and one of the things I've noticed about colleagues under the age of 30 is that so many are incapable of focusing or listening, unless they are the one doing the talking. That's all they can manage - project and talk AT you....but as soon as it's your turn, they switch off. They last up to 5 mins before their eyes dart down to their phone, with the occasional swipe of the finger to refresh their screen. Shortly after the usually totally break eye contact, and just start scrolling right in front of you.
These are not leisurely conversations on a sofa where two people are exchanging small talk, so I find it incredibly rude. There are times where I've just stopped talking and let there be silence. They get the message pretty quickly but often can't resist the impulse to check their screen even after that.
It occurred to me these people grew up in social groups where this is entirely normalised. Whole groups of children sitting at lunch, just scrolling their phones. I think it's sad that they may rarely have had the experience of someone closely listening to them, even if they are talking about something heartfelt or important, so they are unused to providing this for others. They may even have had to compete for their parents undivided attention in the same manner.

I'm Australian and I live across the road from a K-10 school. I never see kids on phones at lunch or after school. They do use tablets and laptops in the classroom sometimes but the government controlled school internet controls what they can search.

I am currently weaning myself off of social media and scrolling to prepare for motherhood. I'd like to avoid having my kids use smartphones or spend too much time on the internet. Hoping I can hold out with getting them just a kindle for as long as possible and instill a love of reading. One way my husband and I are cutting down our own screen time in preparation is to downgrade to having a shared "family iPhone" for use of GPS, banking apps, international calls, etc. and then just having flip phones for our personal use.

    • @siya_checking_in

Such a brilliant idea! I did not go as far as to have a common phone but we rolled back on using the iPad for kids and its been about a year now and we haven't gone back to them. Its about limited screen time and more interaction through play/independent play and outdoors as much as possible. Yes it is a LOT of work for us but once you get into the mode of planning everything ahead it will fall into a routine. The challenge is succumbing to the urge when patience runs out but it can be countered with routine-like norms instilled into day-2-day activities. Good luck and Happy motherhood!

I am so grateful for beings like you questioning the aggressive pace of tech and the impact it’s already had on older kids with their widespread use and reliance on it by now! Yes we need to control their usage sooner and set boundaries. TikTok is banned in some countries. We need to lobby specific platforms to begin with.

It was the worst decision I've ever made to get our son a smart phone for high-school. We lost him for a few years there , but he's now better at controlling his usage in collaboration with us.
Luckily we've never let our children have tablets, and I insist that the primary school give paper based homework to our youngest two.

Thank you for sharing. Mine are in early primary school years and they recently introduced tablets to the older classes in primary which got me worried. Although they reassure parents that the time on tablets will be monitored in school, it is the time taken away from the children to do more engaging personable activities!

When they were talking about the British attitude to children it reminded me of a sign I'd seen on holiday in England. The sign was on a shop. It said children in strollers are not allowed but dogs are welcome. Which is the complete opposite of what would be accepted in my country.

I will never forget, the year I first had a boyfriend, it was 2000 and I was 13, was the year that AOL instant messenger came out. I am only now really grieving for the intimacy that was unavailable to those my age and younger who have only been able to experience relationships in such a blunted way since that time. There is still time to turn this ship around, but the process is painful and lonely. Having voices like this is making it a little easier. I hope i am able to provide a life more beautiful for my children. Thank you both. ❤

My experience of young people starting work at my company is that some expect a huge amount of support, avoid any work outside a small comfort zone, and have little ability to work something out for themselves or come up with an idea. I’ve worked with one person who was unable to put their phone down and was astonished at the idea of not messaging their Mum for four hours. I dread to think what things will be like over the next few years with the current cohort of teenagers, who seem so impoverished in terms of real social interaction and resilience.

Technology is designed to be user-friendly and it will only become more user-friendly with time. The argument that children need to use these devices when young so that they don't fall behind is such bollocks. In truth, children raised on this technology will never develop the skills that make people successful as adults, namely the capacity to put off short-term gratification in favour of achieving long-term goals.

It's not just that society doesn't care about children, really look at media, social media and listen to younger people talk, I know people round my age in their early 30s down to people in their early 20s and all in between who when they talk about children make it very very clear that it's not a lack of care for children, society is pretty openly hostile towards children, they treat children as if they're some inconvenient lower life form not the literal future of society.

I'm French, and I'm sorry to "debunk" what Sophie says, but even if there is indeed a law, passed on July 2020, that is supposed to require authentification for accessing porn sites, it has had no effect so far. The porn sites are just as accessible as they were before, and you only have to click on "I'm over 18" to enter. No proof or authentification is required. The sites have received a "formal notice", demanding that they comply, but they have appealed, and nothing is in place yet.
Also, as someone mentioned below, it's not that Scandinavia is way ahead of us, it's that they adopt liberal policies way before the rest of Europe, and therefore are also the "first ones" to backpedal when it goes wrong - as we've seen with gender transitioning.

Technology is only the vehicle for the content both good and bad. When the term society is used it really means women. Women are compelled to speak their mind regardless if it’s the truth. Pornography is not just the product of artistic expression, but the extension of commercial advertising. Sex sells so it is used to get the attention of potential buyers. There’s usually an attractive woman presenting the product. That is easily transitioned to porn which is selling sex too. Young females are influenced by the glamorous appearance of the women is the commercial advertisements so they strive to emulate them. As an extension to looking pretty what good is that if no one sees her. It’s like if a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound? It only makes a sound if there is an ear to hear it. Otherwise, it’s just a vibration. So what good is being pretty if no one sees her. She must exhibit her beauty so she can appreciate her efforts.

All of the responsibility and blame is placed on young men by these women. All of it. Young women are the receptors and thus, seemingly, innocent. The real work doesn't work like this. It isn't this simple. You are shaming young men for the gross actions of some.
