    FYI - In the UK July 23 those horrible Amazon ppl have Salter 9075 WH3R Electronic Bathroom Scale on at £16 - and they weigh up to 250kg - so most of us only need two scales - and a length of wood!

    You can do this one wheel at a time. Just measure the height of the wood + scale so you can make 3 spacers to put on the 3 wheels not being measured. Do one side at a time.

    I live in Wisconsin and we have feed weights all over the state. When we weighed the street rod(1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Coupe w350sbc and turbo 350 trans) I just drove up got out and it weighed 2,846lbs without me in it, with full interior. No they have them at every scrapyard that has a drive up scale, for you dump your scrap it’ll tell you the exact weight of the car with you in it then you just substract the amount you weight

  • @ChrisLoew
    @ChrisLoew 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Or just drive on lumber for three tires and scales on the fourth so they are the same level when weighting one corner at a time.

    I love this idea - my question is this - could you for the sake of argument weigh one corner of the car at a time, perhaps fit blocks of wood under the opposite tire - (you wouldn't need to block up the back tires when weighing the front) as long as you did not move the car from the spot on the driveway where you were doing the weighing

    • @RoadandRacetv
      @RoadandRacetv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea. My instincts say it wouldn't work as the weight would not transfer evenly. But would be keen to know for sure! Fancy giving it a go?

    • @whitetrashgarage8110
      @whitetrashgarage8110 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would work, however you need to block up the other 3 wheels at the same height as the top of the scale.

      @samin2012 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      car has to be at level even for the approach presented in the video to work. you can may be dig a hole on the ground the bury 2 scales there to flush it with the rest of the wheels and that should work

    • @martyscncgarage5275
      @martyscncgarage5275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it should work, provided all three corners were at the same elevation as the corner with the scale. Make 3 blocks the same elevation as the scales taking into consideration the block of wood on top of them.

      Go to either a Feedmill or a scrapyard and you can drive up onto their scale and it’ll tell you exact weight of your car, Usually they let you do it for free they don’t care

    You spent 80 quid on scales to weigh your car? I simply went to the nearest public weighbridge and paid 9 pounds, including vat, for a calibrated and foolproof measurement with a computer print out. Ha Ha Ha!!

      I build vehicles for events that cannot be (legally) driven on public roads. Instead of loading the car onto a trailer, driving to the scales, unloading, weighing, reloading... this offers a simple solution!

    Wouldn't have been valid to buy fewer scales, and weigh half a car at a time - the front axel, then the rear axel?

    • @RoadandRacetv
      @RoadandRacetv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My gut feeling is that wouldn’t be accurate but give it a go and let me know!

      @@RoadandRacetv Well - that's pretty well the ideal response - and one I use quite a bit too. When they say "It would be better if you did it this way" - I'll suggest that if they do it, then they'll do it better than I did.
      I'm not going to try that, though, because
      a) I don't have any need to know the weight of my car
      b) I have no interest in the weight
      c) I'm not going to buy a pile of bathroom scales to find out something I don't care about anyway
      Incidentally, I did design a lorry scale about 45 years ago, and about 10 of them were made. It measured one wheel (or double-wheel) at a time, so after the scale was reset, the truck had to be on level ground, and was driven over the scale slowly (but not stopping), then the scale was moved to measure the other side of the lorry. It was computerised (Sinclair ZX81) and totted up the total weight. When it was compared with a weigh-bridge, it was within 3%, which was deemed sufficient.
      There are also scales set into the road at toll gates in Europe that measure vehicles as they go through. I read about them many years ago, but I don't remember the details any more.
      When the car is standing on level ground, it applies a certain weight to each wheel. If you were to raise the front axel, the weight distribution might change, but the entire weight of the car would still act through the four wheels, so even if it was vertical, if each wheel was still supported on a horizontal surface, and the front and back surfaces were exactly the distance apart of the wheels, there is no reason why the weights on the individual wheels would change. In reality, though, the angle of the car would barely change if one axel was raised just enough to put it on a scale. I understand your gut feeling, but I honestly think it would come out very close to the result you got.
      The only reason I stuck my oar in was that it seemed financially absurd to me to buy so many scales. It must have been a fairly heavy layout!

    • @MrDrivingFaster
      @MrDrivingFaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would work in theory, but: you would need a level surface, ensure the scales are level by testing level diagonals with boards, match exact scale heights with boards on the other side and (important) rock the car violently after you lower it to the scales. After you lift a car the dampers do not settle in to normal height and the corner balancing is off. When measuring ALL four corners the total remains the same, but when doing a side at a time, the temporary corner height differences will throw you off

    • @DownhillAllTheWay
      @DownhillAllTheWay 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrDrivingFaster What do you mean "it would work in _theory?"_ It *_did_* work! As I said, the one I designed was found to be within 3% of the official weighbridge reading - but there's no guaranteeing that _that_ was spot-on - and the ones set into the road surface that weighed lorries as they approached a toll-gate were (allegedly) more accurate than mine - but also a lot more expensive. They used strain gauges, which were outside of my budget at that time (they're much cheaper now). Mine used water pressure.

    • @darkshadowsx5949
      @darkshadowsx5949 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DownhillAllTheWay they're possibly thinking the car might weigh less due to aerodynamics lifting on the road at high speed.
      like a airfoil. if the car is lifted by air flow then you would have a lighter car and more HP at higher speed. but that's a variable no one wants to measure.
