Thanks for your reaction. Joan Baez was and is a very famous American folk singer. She helped introduce Bob Dylan to the world back in the day. She and Bob Dylan were a couple for quite awhile. This song is about their relationship and the aftermath. Baez' voice is beautiful and unique. This was before auto-tune and over-processing by the record producer. The result is a more pure, un-muddied sound, as though she were singing in person. Also, as you hear, the "soul" hasn't been removed with the other bits. By the way, she played the guitar on this, an amazing guitar player.
Joan Baez is an early folk singer.. She was in a relationship with Bob Dylan. This song is about their relationship. The pictures are of her and Bob Dylan.
I love how honest your reaction was and how you had never heard of her. This song is even more emotional when you know it’s about. I’ve heard so many people say it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
That "guy with the guitar" is Bob Dylan, the most incredible songwriter of his (and many other) generations. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. He and Joan (one syllable, not Jo-Ann) were the king and queen of folk music in the 60's and 70's. He continued to write music for 60 years and is still performing. Both were involved in the Civil Rights movement and the anti-war movements. I suggest you listen to ""The Times They Are A-Changing" and "Blowing in the Wind" to hear what the young Bob Dylan was writing back in the 60s. It was a shock when you didn't recognize him. For us, it would be like someone from your generation not recognizing a picture of Michael Jackson. I congratulate you for beginning to explore the music from the 60s and 70s, but you have a long way to go, partner.
I spent my early childhood ('67 to about '72/'73) laying on our dining room floor to listen to the stereo. My mom played A LOT of Joan Baez, including her ballads. She is an ICON among ICONs.
Joan is a great storyteller, and the song is about her relationship with Bob Dyllan. Diamonds represent enduring love and rust represents decay. She was in love with Dyllan and supported him when he was trying to get recognition as a singer. She was already famous. The relationship turned sour and ended. She is America's most famous folk singer.
The guy she was with in the pictures was Bob Dylan, whose work earned a Nobel prize. Together, in the '60's, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan were the musical embodiment of the Civil Rights movement and the anti-Vietnam war movement. To quote the Wikipedia article about her, Joan Baez Baez performed fourteen songs at the 1969 Woodstock Festival and has displayed a lifelong commitment to political and social activism in the fields of nonviolence, civil rights, human rights, and the environment.
Joan (like phone), is playing the guitar. Joan has been on the scene since 1959. She was famous before the also famous, Bob Dylan. She would introduce him at her concerts. Joan Baez (buy-ez) marched with Martin Luther King Jr., has been a champion for equality for blacks, browns, indigenous, gays, women, etc all her life. She is still very active and was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, even though she started as a folk singer she migrated into all forms of music. She's recorded more than 30 albums. She wrote and sang her heartbreak of her relationship with Bob Dylan. Joan is very anti- establishment. This recording was 1975.
This is a great song by Joan Baez about her old boyfriend Bob Dylan who evidently wasn't as in love as she was. This song grabbed me in the first two lines and just got better as it went. She is a great singer and you should check out her songs.
Joan is an opera singer, as well as her mom; but lends her amazing voice to everything she sings - she has lost much of her vibrato now [ 2024 ] but still sings !
Heh, you're not the only one who becomes instantly emotional upon hearing this song. 🙂 Other bands have indeed covered the song, e.g., Blackmore's Night (which ain't bad, but I still prefer this original studio version). Another (quite short) song of hers is "Rejoice in the Sun", which was also used in the old sci-fi film "Silent Running". You'd probably also like some of the other female artists from that period (60's/70's), such as Joni Mitchell ("Both Sides Now"), and Melanie Safka ("Lay Down"). 🙂
I saw her live somewhen in the beginning of the 80ies. It was an unforgettable experience. Joan's voice is amazing. As you already know, this is about her relationship with Bob Dylan. I heard that she loved him so much but he didn't treat her well. 😥Thanks for your reaction ❤
Joan Baez - Try any of the many covers she did of songs written by Bob Dylan, the subject of Diamonds & Rust: Farewell Angelina, Forever Young, With God On Our Side, Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands. Or try some of the traditional folks songs she recorded: Mary Hamilton, Barbara Allen. Or some of her own songs: Love Song To A Stranger, Prison Trilogy, Honest Lullaby. She goes way back. She sang at the March on Washington in 1963 along with Bob Dylan.
Ms. Baez is my favorite female singer. I've been to two of her concerts. Extraordinary! She is still alive & has add artistry to her repertoire. Her paintings are beautiful. Try reacting to "Tears of Rage" "Forever Young" "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" etc.
"This guy" that she's looking at is Bob Dylan. I actually love that you don't automatically know that. hha. That's so great. (however, a lot of the importance of the song is about how famous he is. so maybe that's lost a bit. I don't know) s
CV it's pronounced Joan like groan not Joann. Last name pronounced Bi-ezz. She's a fabulous folk singer. Personality that's one of my all time favorite songs. Try some Carly Simon. Listen to the song "You're so Vain"
way late here , but anyway - great job. (others have mentioned it is ' Joan. one word. and Baez is pronounced as written each letter is clear. soft 'e ) ) Joan is the entire package. in high school She protested the nutty ' quick here come the Nukes, duck under yer desks' bit. ( I did that late '50's early sixties stuff ). then marching with Martin Luthe King , after that protesting good ole 'Nam... always had her Mind right. musically , PBS did a show on Her maybe 20 years ago now - included film of Her at 17 . 18 singing in Boston coffee houses. the real deal - to. start , she's beautiful of course. that is Her picking guitar , She's a way better player than B. Dylan. She was a real star in say 1962 , on cover of a famous news magazine ( I think ' Time ) and an early booster of bob Dylan, the guy She's singing about. when this album came out Baez went on a tour with Dylan , ' rolling thunder ' I think it was Called - had other stars like Joni Mitchell as well. I think that was the last time they were ' an item'. but who knows about that....
It's "Joan" Like J plus long O and N. Joan. Like sound "JONE" (Not JO-ANNN) Ask Bob Dylan; that's the guy in the pictures. And he's the guy she's singing about. Bob Dylan and JOAN (not JOANNNN !!) had a relationship She loved him. Maybe he loved her. But for some reason he was the one who seemed to have moved on.
Probably the best pure voice in the business. The young guy early in the vid is Bob Dylan.. Try listening to her "Babe, I'm gonna Leave you Now" and then hear it on Led Zeppelin I. Do both in a single reaction, I dare you. For a change of pace, her sister Mimi Baez and Mimi's husband Richard Farina sing "Bold Marauder". Also sung by John Kay, of Steppenwolf fame.
To hear the special sound of Baez, listen to the Child ballads (old English, Scottish, and Appalachian songs) of her first 2 albums. Otherwise she's mediocre, and you won't understand what enchanted her listeners.
Bro , you never heard of Bob Dylan? You don’t even look that young, and it’s Joan, how do you get Joanne? As soon as you said I’m going to pause a lot I was gone
Why can Americans never pronounce Joan, why do they never google how to pronounce Baez ( or Joan, if they're THAT clueless), how could you not recognize Bob Dylan, why assume the man is the guitarist.. I COULD go on.
This is the woman who sang We Shall Overcome at Doctor King's 1963 March on Washington. She is a legend.
I hope there's a video on TH-cam I like to watch that
@@CVTECK1 not a good one unfortunately television news footage that was not focused on the stage
But you can find video's from television performances in the early 1960's, including We Shall Overcome on BBC

I love this song so much and I even forgive her for her use of light years ago as a measurement of time
Joan Baez is an early folk singer.. She was in a relationship with Bob Dylan. This song is about their relationship. The pictures are of her and Bob Dylan.
I don’t know 😂 I just want to be love
Joan wrote the song, played the guitar and sang

Am I really so old? I've listened her songs since over 40 years! You've just discovered? Good on you and play more of her, she's a real artist.
BEAUTIFUL song by Joan Baez. One of her best. Always on my playlist. Try ¨The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down¨

what she does with her voice is called vibrato, she's a member of the rock'n roll hall of fame, she is fuc*ing famous, also for her social activism
If you want more Joan, try "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" and a little live clip with an improptu duet with Nana Mouskouri.
That entire album is beautiful.
That is her in the video and she is singing to none other than BOB DYLAN.

It is absolutely hysterical that he never saw or heard the name Joan before -- such an iconic American name
Bob Dylan's song, "Love is Just a Four Letter Word" is a must listen song she sings.
So glad you got to Baez ! I think the night they drove old dixie down is haunting and really worth a listen
Just for the record , Rob Robertson of ' the Band' wrote that song. J.B. wasn't much a a songwriter but sing / play., pure talent.
Her voice slayed you man, her voice melted you into mush

Her voice is absolutely angelic. She tells about her aching broken heart for Bob Dylan. She loved him dearly and let her heart take a chance....❤
In fact, someone covered this song: Judas Priest. So, if you want a great metal version of it, try it
She is playing the guitar, and she's singing about the other dude in the pictures, folk rock superstar Bob Dylan
I love your watching and hearing your take on music! Keep it up!!!

She is majestic. You're right.
Listen to the lyrics! She is pouring her heart to him. That is what makes this song special.

MIMI DIED IN 2001 OF CANCER AND HER HUSBAND DIED IN A MTR CYCLE ACCIDENT IN 1966 - you would be lucky to find songs by them both !
@@jconearth6686 Look for the song I mentioned. cut from a TV show. worth the looking.
Thank you for this. btw.
Its Joan, not Joanne. She is amazing for sure!
wrong it's Joan like conventional "Joan" Ask Bob Dylan.
If you like her pitch of voice try "silver dagger"
Learn to read her name is JOAN
One day 😂
I don't know what to say, doesn't he know anyone named Joan, or anyone named JoAnn.
It's called vibrato.
Joan , not Joanne . Bob Dylan is with her .
Her name is JOAN not Joanne
Name is pronounced [jōn bī-az']
Joan not Jo Ann
Her name rhymes with own not Jo-an. Her last name sounds like Bi-ezz
it's pronounced, phonetically, I guess "Jone". It's correct spelling is Joan. Not JoAnne. That's a different name.
To hear the special sound of Baez, listen to the Child ballads (old English, Scottish, and Appalachian songs) of her first 2 albums.
Otherwise she's mediocre, and you won't understand what enchanted her listeners.
MEDIOCRE? ! ARE YOU A COMPLETE SOULLESS MORON ! THANKFULLY YOUR OPINION IS JUST THAT, AN OPINION !
