Although I followed your instructions the "Distort" meny is greyed out - no locked layer and only the distort and video alternative is grey. Do someone know a fix? (PS 2024)

I'm an author and would like to use this method for my cover text. Would it be possible to use my cover art instead of the black layer? Or how would you go about still having the smoky look without covering the entire cover?

How could I apply this as just text so essentially place it on any image and it's just the text affected and nothing else. Basically making a png because I can't very well place this on a book cover if I'm honest.

Seems like a cool quick way to get the smoke effect but every time I apply Color Dodge the text gets colors through it? Any idea why? Rudy Salgado TYIA

This happens because the text layer is set to "color dodge". Any layers beneath your text will appear to bleed through. One thing you can try is masking the layer beneath to remove the areas that overlap with your text.
