I retired four years ago and I am on a tight budget, have to be frugal. I knew things would be different, and I prepared for it. I don’t mind - it’s a relief! I’m shocked how “conditioned” to buy what I wanted I actually was! How brainwashed I had become to thoughtlessly buy buy buy. But I quit cold turkey! What a relief! Cheers!

You just hit the nail on the head with this video. I’m 67 and my husband is almost 66 we retired over 3 years now and love it but we could have done it years before if we weren’t so stupid and got sucked into consumerism especially with cars. The feeling that you need to get a new car every 3 years either on HP or leased I can’t even begin to think about the money we wasted over the years Thankfully we both paid a works pension. A couple of years ago we realised if we wanted to retire before we could get our state pension we would have to prepare. We really cut back on everything our home was paid and we sold our fancy car (lost a fortune on it) and bought a second hand Volvo which we still have. I m grateful that we are both healthy and have been blessed with time to enjoy our retirement. Great insightful video…

Thank you for your inspiration of common sense, common good, of having common needs. As I am older, now, I can see now those many early years when I went through those years of wants, as I had money, working still living at home. Young and foolish, spending more than I saved. Now since in my 60s save more than I spend. I am no longer materialistic, I have what I have, furniture second hand or saved from what I bought 30 years ago, clothes on my back I bought over 10 years ago, mend clothing!
Trade clothes at giveaway shops. Eat my garden foods for 6 - 8 months. Eat whatever is on sale. Being frugal. Slow living, is slowing down in all sense of manner. Thank you Nigel, peace be with you, love.

I enjoyed your talk 👍. There was a time, when it was possible to make more money, when you worked more. One salary was enough. These times are over. Nowadays people work a lot to just get by and still they can't afford even basic things. Of course, there is another side to this, people have higher standards today and want this and that ( no critiscm), but still people struggle. As already mentioned, money is freedom to choose how, where and with whom we spend our time. Time is equally precious. Consuming though doesn't bring any happiness. Happiness comes from within and not what you have. Love your wisdom. Your videos are top notch 😁

Do you have any advice for someone with chronic illnesses and constant pain that has no choice but to work and is unable to drive or go places on their own? I work from home, only one company 6 years, have worked my way up.
It feels so hard to keep going when I have been exhausted and struggling for years. The idea of more (I am only 24) sends me into deep spirals and sadness and I just want to feel peace and better.
I don't know how I can keep working until retirement but everything is too expensive. I want slowness but feel I must try to get out of the 9-5 to pursue my art but if everything tires me out, how is that any better? I have tried and tried

Wise words indeed. I sometimes wonder, did our grandparents have a happier life with less? Staycations, no updating gadgets and household items constantly, less food choices, less eating out, only 4 tv channels … This consumerism starts with kids these days - trainers, phones, elaborate birthday parties and parents feel pressurised to give them what they want and the cycle continues. Start a revolution- simple Less is More living 🤗 Readings of short ghost stories from your local area would be great 👻 Enjoy the sunshine 🌞

    • @primalengland
      @primalengland  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think a lot of us have thought long and hard about that. Our grandparents had a harder life, but they didn’t know that, because they lived what was normal at the time. They didn’t have the consumerism, but the term wasn’t even invented.
I think back on my young childhood. It was only 60+ years ago, but it was happy. We didn’t own anything or want anything. We built dens and made catapults. We played in the streets and annoyed the neighbours. We were mischievous but not bad.
I think it was better. Harder but better.

I don't have a TV, car, streaming services or subscriptions, I don't take foreign holidays and rarely have nights out, am I happy? Hell yes! I don't need for anything, I can do more or less as I please, I have no one I have to answer to and certainly no need to 'keep up with the Joneses'. Great encouragement, as usual - thank you. These videos are coming at such a perfect time - they really kick me up the behind and get me motivated. We’ve spent the last 18 months coming to terms with losing my lovely mum who lived with us. She was 94, but not anywhere near passing away, or so we thought. We didn’t realise how full on life was until that awful morning when it all came to a screeching halt so unexpectedly. Looking back, it was quite terrifying at the 24/7 care routine suddenly being gone. We went from every single second of the day being taken up, to just sitting here wondering what just happened. The last eight years had been full on with looking after both my parents for much of it. In the midst of it all, my husband retired after working non-stop since age 15. Suddenly, the merry-go-round stopped and flung us off. And despite knowing that day would come, it was still a huge shock. I think there is an art to slow living and you are definitely helping people get to grips with it. Your videos have given me a ‘seize the day’ attitude, even when I feel as if I can’t. I MAKE myself. We are both 68 now and finally learning that this is OUR time to live. Perhaps it’s the working class conditioning that makes it difficult to embrace freedom - who knows? The middle and upper classes don’t seem to have a problem with it. Anyway, thank you for encouraging us all to embrace a simpler, slower life. This is the most content I have felt in 18 months. I love reading all the comments too - it’s good to know there are lots of us relating to your videos.

My first ghostly experience was at a friend's house - a Victorian house on three floors- when I was about 18 years old. I'd gone to the bathroom and while I was washing my hands, I glanced into the mirror. Behind me, in the doorway, stood an old lady. We smiled at each other in the mirror but when I turned round, she'd gone. When I went downstairs, I told Alistair. 'That's Grandma', he replied. I said that I hadn't realised she lived with them.
'She doesn't any more. She died when I was little'.
My last ghost was in a bookshop in a cathedral town. Again, an old building. I was alone on the second floor and turned to see a man in a long coat walk across the room and straight through a door in the wall. I asked the staff about it and they just smiled and said 'You're not the first'. How can we explain these things?

I don’t have debt or credit cards , if I can’t afford it I don’t buy it or I save up for it , I have cut back because of the cost of living and life is hard , great video Xx

I’m the same, Linda. I had a credit card when I had my business, but haven’t had one for 17 years. If I want something, I save up. It’s the best policy. 😊

Money is like your winter wood supply. If you keep burning alot of pieces in your wood stove and dont cut some more, you will run out.

Possibly your most important video to date. You're so right. We've had consumerism drilled into us from birth and escaping it is so difficult but so important on the path to finding inner peace. Thank you. 🙏
