For an Oldhead like myself, this jawn took me way way back lol! Almost every other time I sit down and cook up a beat, I think about the limitations, but at the same time, the beauty and creativity that we had, making dollars outta 15 cent. Thank God for the new technology, but respect the architects of our culture!!! Salute Kirk 🙏🏾✊🏾💚

A lot of folks say the legacy samplers had a sound because it was 12-bit which is true somewhat. But that gritty ass boombap sound came from the combo of low bitrate and the sample being sped up so fast to save sample time and having to pitch it down which just destroyed it and gave it that crunch. Along with the built in compression and converters. I guess if you rally has paper you could pair a sampler with an s950 for like 10 more seconds of mono sample time.

these "shortcuts" added all that character we recognize as 80s/90s. just like sampling only one note of a synth often made it sound like old-school house. great walkthrough.

The bit depth of the samples, also contributed a large amount of sampling's character, back then. Many machines sampled in 12bit, instead of today's 16+ Some of the most prized vintage samplers, are 12bit.

My first sampler way back was a Casio FZ1 and man did we have to work a sample ,pitch it ,trim it, copy it ,filter it. A lot of effort went into maybe just a 2/3 second sample and then we had to get creative with it and after all that we were committed to making it work and this really made us learn our craft . Great days, with today’s amazing equipment which I love ,it can make us all a bit lazy because if something ain’t happening we can just chuck it away and start again all in the space of 2 minutes. Never stop learning people as everything that sounds good to you is what it’s all about no right or wrong, enjoy your skills and let the music flow. Much love kirkstate great channel

Nice work, Sir! If the X had a floppy drive I bet you coulda fit that whole beat on it. So much great music came from limited tools that were pushed to their limits. You also saved time on the back end because when you re-pitched the edited samples, they had the correct lo-fi flavour baked in due to how you sampled them.

My old skool machine was the Gemini 808 & later SP-1200 for cleaner sound ....i would use these machine for.when i haf to put together "DMC Wold Supremacy" mix competition. For anybody dont know whats a DMC competition was.....the best way i can put it is remember the movie "Juice" ? Where "Q" scratched against "DJ Majesty" from "Da King & I"....i would create my own scratch breaks. I liked to turn up the BPM to like 118, then add my scratches, my vocal chops, my 1 sec stabs, & alot hard drums. Those older machines made great hip hop beats yae check them out ....

My first sampler was the Yamaha VSS-30. I was twelve, when it came out. The Roots always mention the Casio SK-1, but the VSS-30 did a lot more than the SK-1, by far. I've had many samplers since then, including the SP-202, Akai S900, and Yamaha SU700. I have probably one of the tiniest samplers on the market right now, the Nunomo Qun mk2. It's nuts. It'll sequence granular samples.

I Think The Reason Why Songs Were Better Back In The Day Was Because of The "WORDS & STYLES OF EXPRESSIONS" On The Track, NOT THE SOUNDS... Nowadays The BEATS And SOUNDS Are Clearly BETTER, But The Lyrics Are Too Similar From One Artist To Another, In Other Words "LESS ORIGINALITY" ! These New MPC'S and Alike Are NEWISH So In Due Time People Will Start Focusing More On Content Because Now Its Easier To Make A GOOD BEAT.

"You HAD to be creative" - and that is why most producers nowadays do not have their own sound. Everyone's production sounds the same with exception to a handful. The negatives about having all this technology is that is has taken away peoples creativity and all a producer has to do now is drag and drop a midi file, and 10 times out of 10 they only rely on the sounds in their DAW.
