Don’t know why, but wouldn’t have been kind of surprising if they decided to add an easter egg where if they ask if R2 remembers “George Lucas” or “John Williams” or even call it a good droid, then R2 would beep out the 20th Century fanfare?

No, this is the Interactive R2-D2, released in 2002. It was also rereleased a few times, most notably in 2007. The Smart R2 is much smaller, (Around 10 inches, while the Interactive R2-D2 is 16 inches tall.)
Are you certain that you have the Hasbro Interactive R2-D2, and not the Thinkway Interactive Robotic Droid R2-D2? Those are two completely different R2-D2's, that are the same size.

I still have mine from 2002! At this point, the plastic is yellowed and he is missing a few pieces, but i have a ton of great memories with him.
