Władysław Laskonogi (Spindleshanks) wasnt a king, he was the senior duke. Between 1138 and 1304 Poland wad divided into few smaller dutchies. According to last kings will, the oldest duke from the bloodline had his province and Kraków, which meant he was the "Duke of dukes". Ofc few years after his death infighting began and its a really messy period that not many Poles even know much about
Being a king of Poland was a funny case after the 1573, as king basically was like today's president or prime minister while the nobles did anything they could to lower taxes and make their life easier (and other countries could easily bribe one noble to call a veto on any vital change)
Bashing boats together wasn’t the big invention of the first punic war, it was done before too. The invention was naval warfare with landbased one. Romas were really good on land, Carthaginians on the seas. So Romans came up with deployable bridges, so they can board enemy ships and can stick what they are good at already.

As weapons become more destructive, wars do indeed become more hellish. People in the 11th century didn't have to deal with cannons. People in the 19th century didn't have to deal with airplanes dropping bombs, or machine guns, or the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation. Yes, people in the medieval times had to deal with hunger, thirst, starvation, exhaustion, crimes against civilians, infected wounds, freezing temperatures, but modern soldiers have to deal with all of that in addition to all the other awful stuff we've invented since then. And I WILL say that wars have become a lot less honourable. De-humanizing your enemy, while it did happen in olden times aswell, nowadays is just a standard tactic in every war. At the very least, when Europeans of the same faith and denomination fought against each other, usually they respected each other prior to WW1.
Today wars are also extremely drawn out and ideological because each sides is too proud to admit defeat. That's were all the suffering for civilians comes from. Back in the day armies would fight a few battles and (for the most part) one side would admit defeat after it, cede some territory and the war would be over in a short amount of time. Today they would ruin the economy and future of their whole country over some stupid border province no one really cares about in reality. Just out of pride to admit defeat.
