I don’t know if it’s a British humor thing or what it is but for(IMO) a program centered around one man’s earnest responses to questions and his statements in general, I can’t comprehend how this whole thing has been spun from the get go as Karl spewing ridiculous drivel because he’s just a little Bald Headed Manc
Ricky thinks he is better than Karl and that only his logic make sense when a lot of the time Ive noticed Karl has more valid points than him. Ricky willfully strawmans Karl's ideas or thoughts. It can be irritating at times
+Keagon Louw No, he doesn't. For the purposes of this show, he intentionally plays the antagonist to rile up Karl and get him to say interesting things. You need to see more interviews of them separate from this show to see how he really feels about him. There are even specific videos where he states how he feels and in all of them he, in one way or another, calls Karl a genius. Because Karl is. Not entirely and he certainly has a lot of ignorance, but he thinks out of the box and it's both bizarre and entertaining.
Karl is the most introspective person ive ever seen and he makes some seriously good and valid points regarding his preference for a dictionary in a stranded island. Wanting to educate yourself, form a better and more elaborate vocabulary, to have a greater understanding and grasp of language in order to fuel your imagination and inner dialouge is a wonderful idea and it has far more replay value than a good novel because the knowledge it contains is so vast that its not something you can ever do in one sitting or even a year i think. Take for instance the new oxford american dictionary contains over 200 thousand definitions. Contains illustrative examples, short biographies, concepts, facts, places, cultures, religions politics, iidioms and overall priceless information concerning our world, i mean i understand Ricky's point that if theres no one else around you dont have to communicate your thoughts because you know them but they overlook the significant virtues that come with it. Through the learning new words you can know yourself even better. Also its a pretty good and healthy mental exercise.
In my country there was girl , she was kidnapped by the age of 8 and she managed to escape 10 years later . In the Frist Interview she gave everybody was just blow up by her verbal abilities. I mean her vocabulary and the sentence construction sounds like you would talk with a 70 years old Cambridge professor . And her explanation for that was very similar to Karl’s . She sad she had a radio and a couple of books and all she wanted was to stay strong , in her body and mind so one day she will be able to escape . And (self) education was the only thing she had and only thing that was keeping her away from going nuts . So yes this makes actually much more sense to me then a art book
I've never seen Desert Island Disks but if it's assumed that you can actually reasonably survive on this island for more than a few weeks... Ricky wants to die comfortably numbed and Karl wants to become a hermit philosopher? I'm with Karl on this one.
As for the "eyes get bored" bit I think he meant that humans can get bored of anything after a while. A dictionary has more potential to last longer because of the variety.
Soliloquizing is one of the most often-sighted signs of creativity and intelligence. If Ricky and Steve weren't always looking for ways to call Karl stupid, they'd be embarrassed to say they never do it.
Even if you are not aware of the correct term, all that will do is prevent you from sub-vocalising, it won't stop you from understanding your own thoughts. Being able to convey thoughts through language and conversation, is only valuable when there is something or someone you need to convey those thoughts too, he's right that art could get old/boring though.
Karl has a point; without being able to develop your thoughts into words it is difficult to understand flaws in logic, new perspectives, etc. This is part of the reason why a paper can tend to write itself; once ideas are put into solid words more ideas flourish. Being able to understand new forms to place abstract thoughts into is beneficial to creating new thoughts.
Yes. Language isn't only for communication, but for formulating your own thoughts. For example, when doing complex tasks, studies show that people who talk themselves through the task are far more efficient and successful at the task than people who don't. There are many other situations in which complex language skills are beneficial to an individual without directly communicating with another person. ...and yet, reading the dictionary alone on a deserted island seems pretty depressing...
George Carlin once said, "We do think in our language. The quality of our thoughts and ideas can only be as strong as the quality of our language." So with that said, Karl could've made his argument a little stronger...
Naythen Lowe I agree with George Carlin on that, but I still don't think that does much for Karl's argument. Language is about so much more than vocabulary, which is actually one of the less important aspects of a mastery of language. Some of the most beautiful, impactful, and thoughtful language uses very simple language. It'd be much better in my opinion to bring an anthology of some of the most important pieces of work in literature, as that would expose you to more varied and interesting language than you could ever get from a list of words.
That doesn't make a difference to Karl's arguments. That's just an appeal to authority and is worthless in a debate; it just shows that you have no proper reasoning.
Ricky says you can't get sick of art, yet he just said he'll get sick of the records he brings. If it's the same art, of course you can get sick of it, just like the record.
matteo salamanca :P because im autistic does not mean im stupid. i am actully one of the rare people that are clever. like alot of scientist are autistic. like Einstein and Newton.
According to Chomsky ,the more complex your language is, the more complex thoughts you can form. It is absolutely the case that people with larger vocabularies are capable of more complex thought. Karl is spot on here.
I do think Karl is onto something, if your choice of book is something that inspires your thoughts through internal concepts rather than external ones then you're going to make far more use of that particular book. Personally I'd choose a book on abstract maths or computer programming... and then let my mind go wild with the various different concepts that I'd read about.
Once again, Karl is correct. Language is the evolution of man. This is a deeply metaphysical concept and absolute truth. Regular folks will never grasp it.
+Joe Schmo Exactly. Collection and storage of food and water, fire starting, shelter making, raft making etc. To hell with never getting home i'm getting somewhere. Although my luck would be finding an island inhabited by cannibals or otherwise hostile people who don't know I'm not a threat to them. Or sharks...
I think taking a dictionary is brilliant. No matter what book you bring you will read it over and over until you get sick of it. With a dictionary you can perfect your vocabulary and write your own stories. That’s infinite entertainment for the rest of your time on the island.
Every time I learn a new word I can also form more complex thoughts and Ideas. It's not about just being able to think of something.... It's about being concise and efficient.
Funny thing is, before he even answered the question, I thought to myself that I'd take a dictionary. There doesn't need to be some philosophical reason behind it like Steve and Rickie think, maybe Karl just wanted to learn a few extra ways to express himself and fill in the blanks he often finds when trying to convey a point.. Whether he uses them or not on a deserted island with no one to talk to is irrelevant, I merely think he wanted to expand his knowledge of words and got blasted for it.
Karl is right here, under maslows hierarchy of needs "self actualisation" is a higher order need, educating himself achieves that for Karl. An Art book does not, a dictionary also has thousand of words in it and would take longer to get bored of than a book of pictures. According to many philosophers the quality of ones thoughts are dictated by the quality of ones language so Karl's point about it helping him form his thoughts more clearly is a point that's been made many times before by people these two would probably look up to like Ludwig Wittenstein, Bertrand Russell and Noam Chomsky. The more i watch this show the more convinced i am that Karl is actually the most unwittingly spiritual/philosophical person i know of.
Yeah I am with most others on this. Karl has the better point, plus language ABSOLUTELY shapes your thoughts and how you perceive the world. There are many great studies that prove this out.
Interesting. In consequence of the Sapir Whorf Hypothesis he would chose to elaborate his language in order to increase the complexity of his thoughts and stimulate inner dialogues.
2 screenwriters are telling karl he doesn't need words... on top of that merchant doesn't think in terms of language...and ergo nobody else does...hehe pilki more interesting yet again. i would bring pen and paper. first written sentence on that paper(s): "how did i end up here?"
brain is dictionary. you'll realize that in few decades... but being from uk or usa yours probably won't be bilingual, but that's fine too, still plenty to think about. on the desert(ed) island.
I'd bring a dictionary if not a survival guide book. It's novelty. Words are concepts in applicable form. Learning more of them and what they mean means you'll have a better understanding of concepts you didn't understand or never even thought of. He just didn't explain it well, but bringing a dictionary is not a bad idea.
I agree with him. I mean if you're on an Island then whatever the book you have is, Eventually you'll Tire of it. So the best thing to do is to write books of your own, to help you cope with Island life. And so the best book to bring would be a dictionary, something that would help you write more books.
i saw something a while back talking about how people's inner monologues are either full sentences or conceptual thoughts, and most people aren't aware of the two ways. i'd say steve and ricky think in the conceptual thoughts whereas karl thinks in sentences, which is why they think karl's dictionary idea is so strange
Why do they all think Karl is an idiot? He's someone that uses his brain and thinks based on his personal experiences. He even has the knowledge to realize his own ideas might not make sense. He's not afraid to tell you what he thinks and debate what he thinks.
Not being funny but Karl makes a valid point, he's less concerned with the approval of others such as Ricky is. And is in fact looking at self betterment.
Kinda funny to realize that Karl is one step ahead of Ricky and Steve on this one. They believe that we can independently form opinions, come up with original thoughts and be completely free like the existentialists did while Karl knows that we're only the product of our specific culture and language. He sides with the determinists that came later in history. I'm fun at parties.
A dictionary isn't that bad, actually. Unlike a novel or other story telling book, it takes longer to finish and thereby keeps his mind occupied for a longer period of time. By the time he's plowed through it, he can start again, relearning the words he's forgotten. Any other book would be dull to read over and over again in a short amount of time. Also, time spent learning is never wasted as it increases your brain capasity. And let's face it, as long as there's something to do on a desserted island, the risk of being bored to madness is vastly lessened. Not to mention the fact there's a great chance of being rescued, with all the ships sailing everywhere in the world. All this gained knowledge would come in handy once he's back into society.
Ryan G. personally, i may take an art book but then thats one of my interests. if you are more interested in english and the meanings of words then a dictionary would be a good choice for you.
It wouldn’t be my first choice, but with the dictionary you would have that access to language, you could create more sentences, you’d probably get some great ideas just from random words. I get his point, I’d use an art book for firewood before too long. But I’d take the vat of novacane before anything else
It could be argued that Karl's book choice is more logical as it is educational and therefore can be used to create Some sense self actualisation , which is listed as a higher order human need in Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
After watching hours upon hours of Karl, I'm getting more and more convinced that he's actually really clever.
Shoom he just has an intricate way of thinking. If he didn’t skip school, I honestly think he’d put Ricky to shame with his intellectuality
I'm glad I'm not alone
He's definitely not an idiot that's for sure.
He's definitely not stupid he just has a very different way of thinking then most people
I don’t know if it’s a British humor thing or what it is but for(IMO) a program centered around one man’s earnest responses to questions and his statements in general, I can’t comprehend how this whole thing has been spun from the get go as Karl spewing ridiculous drivel because he’s just a little Bald Headed Manc
“Eight records, I’m gonna be sick of them”
“You can’t get sick of art”
Never quite understood Ricky on that one
Ricky thinks he is better than Karl and that only his logic make sense when a lot of the time Ive noticed Karl has more valid points than him. Ricky willfully strawmans Karl's ideas or thoughts. It can be irritating at times
Well, it's hard to not pay attention to music, with art it can exist without being imposing.
Seven Costanza find the longest albums ever
+Keagon Louw No, he doesn't. For the purposes of this show, he intentionally plays the antagonist to rile up Karl and get him to say interesting things. You can get sick of looking at a painting. It’s why people redecorate. They get bored of looking at the same room.
Karl is the most introspective person ive ever seen and he makes some seriously good and valid points regarding his preference for a dictionary in a stranded island. I like that argument
Its one hell of a better choice than an art book, thats for sure.
I really like Ricky Gervais, but he is an intellectual ponce.
In my country there was girl , she was kidnapped by the age of 8 and she managed to escape 10 years later . In the Frist Interview she gave everybody was just blow up by her verbal abilities. "You what??"
"Ohh, don't stop"
So funny!!
A dictionary would keep you mind more active then an art book. I think Karl has a good point.
As for the "eyes get bored" bit I think he meant that humans can get bored of anything after a while. A dictionary has more potential to last longer because of the variety.
You can still ponder and contemplate art and its meanings though, especially if you have knowledge of art history then you can link things together
Soliloquizing is one of the most often-sighted signs of creativity and intelligence. If Ricky and Steve weren't always looking for ways to call Karl stupid, they'd be embarrassed to say they never do it.
"Me eyes want a change... That's what it's all about" LMAO
Ricky says he'd get sick of his 8 records but then says you can't get sick of art. Music is another form of art.
Is it weird that I understand what Karl is trying to say most of the time?
I normally think he has a point but a bad explanation but this time I think he has no point at all lol.
I actually agree with him most of the time.
Smart ideas expressed awkwardly vs. dull ideas spoken well
Ricky Gervais gets on my tits by pulling him up all the time, when he knows exactly what he means.
Karls a lowkey genius hahaha
That dictionary talk was utter bollocks 😂
Karl's point (expanding vocabulary etc) is made difficult to justify as he himself can't find the appropriate words. It's a perfectly valid view.
Karl's 100% right on this one.
+JoeStunner
Why? So you can have a schizophrenic discussion with a professor of linguistics at Oxford University or some shit?
Even if you are not aware of the correct term, all that will do is prevent you from sub-vocalising, it won't stop you from understanding your own thoughts.
Being able to convey thoughts through language and conversation, is only valuable when there is something or someone you need to convey those thoughts too, he's right that art could get old/boring though.

That doesn't make a difference to Karl's arguments. That's just an appeal to authority and is worthless in a debate; it just shows that you have no proper reasoning.
Naythen Lowe
That's worthy of Wittgenstein.
But then again George Carlin also said the US likes to bomb people based on the colour of their skin.
Ricky says you can't get sick of art, yet he just said he'll get sick of the records he brings. If it's the same art, of course you can get sick of it, just like the record.
2:54 one of the most profound things Karl has ever said... and I agree 100%. Don't understand why they give him a hard time after that.
daavichon Because he's wrong...
Any novel is better at boosting creativity and your imagination than a dictionary though.
one novel though
Guitar lover Bring an anothology
daavichon So you'd take a dictionary?
i wish karl was my uncle everyone needs an uncle like karl
he is a bit like me im autistic he might not
oh no...
matteo salamanca :P because im autistic does not mean im stupid. i am actully one of the rare people that are clever. like alot of scientist are autistic. like Einstein and Newton.
SECO oh ok
No one needs an uncle like karl. He's so fucking stupid.
A dictionary is a great idea. I'd probably go for an encyclopedia.
encyclopedia would be useful, can't take anything that can help you
1:43 Ricky was probably gonna say he should worry about survival but remembered he brought a fuckin' art book 😂
Makes for good tinder
"I'll have a good little chat."😂😂😂
“You alright?”
“You what?”

***** You don't understand his point... >.>
Tobias Duncan So you'd take a dictionary?
Fuck Chomksy.
Wittgenstein and Russell said it long before Chomsky.
Noam and Karl the two great minds!.
See they rip into Karl but I couldn't agree more - a giant bag of Revels would be the perfect companion on a solitary island experience :D
Claire A unlimited revels
A confectionary rod so you can catch your own Revels.
I do think Karl is onto something, if your choice of book is something that inspires your thoughts through internal concepts rather than external ones then you're going to make far more use of that particular book. Computer programming would surely drive you insane. You'd never be able to test your knowledge in any real way.
"yoohoo, antidisestablishmentarianism!"
*"GET HIM ON THIS BOAT **_NOW"_*
^^ I couldn't think of anything original to say, so I posted this.
michael you could just shut up
michael, why do you insist on sucking the fun out of everything?
Once again, Karl is correct. Language is the evolution of man. This is a deeply metaphysical concept and absolute truth. Regular folks will never grasp it.
Love these and the fact that they struggle to get Karl to even answer one of them!
Karl is secretly a genius. He is 100% correct on this one.
an encyclopedia would be better.
"Well, I don't want 'savin''; I want 'capturin'"
"Alright, sorry, wait for the next boat."
"Don't stop"
fucking dying over here.
Karl is a god damn genius
language is how we make sense of the world. karl is spot on!
Yoo-hoo! Antidisestablishmentarianism!
What a scarmfarious word!
Oh my god I thought he was just taking the piss, it's a real word.
I couldn't hear him properly because I have pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
LMAO
This is all floccinaucinihilipilification
Karl made a lot of sense here.
You know what book i'd take? A survival guide.
They did say it cannot be useful.
I'd probably take a chemistry book.
Karl Pilkington is all I would need on my desert island!
The "you what?" Gets me every time 😭😭😂😂
This is brilliant. Really brilliant
Clive Warren's on the island
I think taking a dictionary is brilliant. No matter what book you bring you will read it over and over until you get sick of it. With a dictionary you can perfect your vocabulary and write your own stories. That’s infinite entertainment for the rest of your time on the island.

Karl's right. What a mind!
.. Karl really is a genius. And like that Swami said (that he will inspire) he inspired me to now want to read more and learn new words..
If I was a artist or musician I'll bring a sketch book or a violin... Just to draw my own porn or make my own music

"Why would yuh tek that?" so good
Karl is the best. He's smart. Just because he isn't as articulate as the other two doesn't mean his points aren't on.
In survival point of view talking to yourself is important so you don't forget the language.
Karl is really making the best of the situation.
"Do you think in words you don't use?" Fuckin yes Carl. I do.
it's hilarious how much more in tune to logic Karl is compared to ricky and steve.
The dictionary has a lot of pages for toilet paper.
Kyle Netherwood so does ‘Harry Potter: The Goblet of Fire’
Yeah I am with most others on this. Karl has the better point, plus language ABSOLUTELY shapes your thoughts and how you perceive the world. There are many great studies that prove this out.
I think a dictionary is a pretty clever luxury item. Malcom X developed his vocabulary reading a dictionary. Next best thing to an encyclopedia.
I love that cartoon Stephen breaks the fourth wall at 0:08
Well spotted
If you think Karl is a persona created, you're dafter than him
+Davie Taggart Karl isn't clever enough and Ricky isn't funny enough to create Karl's persona.
DrugzRKoool well if it is a persona created then you have no idea how clever karl is do you
The book I would take is any DIY build everyday items from materials found on the island.
Karl is actually a genius in this one
Interesting. In consequence of the Sapir Whorf Hypothesis he would chose to elaborate his language in order to increase the complexity of his thoughts and stimulate inner dialogues.
Karl's an absolute genius.
"You got to talk to yourself cos there's nobody else about "😁 😁
2 screenwriters are telling karl he doesn't need words...
on top of that merchant doesn't think in terms of language...and ergo nobody else does...hehe
pilki more interesting yet again.
i would bring pen and paper.
first written sentence on that paper(s): "how did i end up here?"
ivo kostić So you'd take a dictionary?
brain is dictionary. you'll realize that in few decades...
but being from uk or usa yours probably won't be bilingual, but that's fine too, still plenty to think about.
on the desert(ed) island.
yeah on a island
Karl is a poet philosopher.
„He‘s got a head like a fuckin‘ wot?“
“You WOT?”
“Oo don’t stop”
this is actually poetic
If I were stuck on a desert island, I'd probably take a dictionary with me as well because I feel like my vocabulary is lacking sometimes
I'd bring a dictionary if not a survival guide book. It's novelty. Words are concepts in applicable form. I get what Karl is saying, i think what he said was smart in lots of ways.
I've been watching these 3 for a long time and some times I really do think Karl is the smartest one
They should do an idiot abroad special episode and send him to an Island with a bag of revels and a dictionary xD
I have NO idea who this chap is, but I fucking love him!
DAT laugh though :D
Why do they all think Karl is an idiot? He's someone that uses his brain and thinks based on his personal experiences. He even has the knowledge to realize his own ideas might not make sense. He's not afraid to tell you what he thinks and debate what he thinks.
Not being funny but Karl makes a valid point, he's less concerned with the approval of others such as Ricky is. And is in fact looking at self betterment.
Like always, Karl is a genius and Ricky and Steven miss the point entirely.
A lot of the contestants actually used to choose the dictionary on this show.
Taking a dictionary ia genius its a huge book you could keep a fire going for days
If I did this, I'd bring a book with every book I own written in it.
Karl is right I reckon. People are generally not very good at simply thinking. That's why we need to write shit down.
I like how Karl comes up with a far more intelligent answer yet Stephen and Ricky both try to make him sound stupid...
A book of art? What a knob
He’s always so desperate to be seen as cultured and intelligent
Think Karl defo has a point, I would take a telephone directory...used to love looking at all the funny names as a kid!
I would bring a blank book and something to draw with.
I would take a "how to survive on a island" book.
A dictionary isn't that bad, actually. Unlike a novel or other story telling book, it takes longer to finish and thereby keeps his mind occupied for a longer period of time. In the Office character Gareth, Ricky and Steve tried and failed to write someone as infuriatingly distant from reality as Karl is.
I think Karl’s 100% right here tho
Karl is a leg onist and funny
Taking a dictionary is genius its a huge book you could keep a fire going for a days
I do love Ricky gervais but he's wrong here. How is dictionary anymore stupid than a book of art?
benito tommassi So you'd take a dictionary?
Ryan G. personally, i may take an art book but then thats one of my interests. if you are more interested in english and the meanings of words then a dictionary would be a good choice for you.
