  • Hi all, today we are focusing on Protea propagation through cuttings. master this and you can have absurd amounts of plants in your collection!
Additional note: Cuttings can only be taken from not patented or expired patent material. doing anything other than this would be unlawful. please do your research!
    thank you all!

Thankyou for a very informative video, very easy to understand and follow. I am in Australia and I have a beautiful well established King Protea in my front yard, it measure roughly 2metres tall. I am wanting to take cuttings from it, and had no idea on how to do this. As we are now in Spring, i can see a couple of perfect places to strike from. I will be watching more of your Videos, Thanks again ..

Thanks Jason - this video is great! Watching this all the way from NZ.
I have 2 questions I'm hoping you can answer:
Do you use river sand or is finer beach sand ok?
Have you ever had any success in propogating in water? Prior to finding your video I tried a couple of cuttings both in potting mix (big fail - it died within days) and water. The ones in water are still quite healthy looking but there is no root growth (it has been about 2 months). I used a rooting hormone after cutting.
I have just followed your instructions on some more cutting so hoping for some success with those. Unfortunately we have to pull out our Protea tree so hoping to grow some babies..

Great video! I’m in coastal San Diego and have found that after 3 years in ground, my leucospermums have done great, my leucadendrons are OKish, but my proteas have yet to flower. (Didn’t manage to get my banksias in ground before they bit the dust.) Any thoughts on why/how these species behave so differently in a garden landscape? Advice?

Im from cape town south africa and really despise banksias grevilleas and waratahs with a passion.... Probably because we hate the aussies.... i can grow proteas here with ease... its like just popping them in the soil and off they go.... My grandmother use to grow them in her garden.... i remember going to her house, close to the sea shed have tons of it... they were just growing wild i think.

    • @AdHortus

I can clarify. so we are definitely watering them every so often. the goal is to keep the soil at a medium moisture. if your soil dries completely, your cuttings WILL fail. the consistant routine and maintaining moist soil will bring you success. Thanks!
