- Mercury is one of the only elements that's liquid at room temperature and it's also very dense. It's even denser than lead and is known to be very toxic, but as a liquid, it's kind of ok to touch.
WARNING: Do not touch mercury or play with mercury. It is toxic and an environmental hazard, so it must be handled appropriately and disposed of properly.

Before touching mercury, put sanitizer on your hands. The sanitizer will automatically find cuts you didn’t even know existed, so you'll know whether it’s safe to touch mercury or not
That's gonna hurt more than the mercury.

I've touched mercury before, I'm surprised he didn't mention how strange it feels. It's like liquid, but you don't get wet. It also pushes your fingers out because of how dense it is.

And those obvious reasons are cost and abundance. Gallium is one of the rarest elements on earth and it is "very" "very" expensive. Even the extraction of gallium from zinc ores is difficult. You will find gallium based thermometers only in rich private hospitals. Most of the household thermometers are mercury-based. The price of gallium based thermometers is 3-4 times higher than mercury thermometers. Mercury is more abundant than gold and silver.

Fun Fact: A metal very similar to Mercury is Gallium! If you have the urge to play with a liquid metal that turns into a solid I recommend getting that. It's safe to touch with no toxic fumes. At room temperature it's solid but it can start melting in your hands, pretty cool.

At the dentist's i got my tooth literally filled with mercury. Had known of it toxicity and asked the doctor why they are using it and she said the concentration used has been tested to cause no harm. Yes i ended up filling the tooth but am not reconciled within me. Hoping to go back n get it replaced
Risk losing the tooth that way. Next step is root canal or implants -both also carry a bevy of harmful substances. Anytime a filling is removed -you’re further damaging the tooth.

Mercury was used as a laxative in the 1700's. This is specifically one of the ways that researchers know exactly where the Lewis and Clark expedition set up camp in some places because they found traces of mercury in the ground at the campsites.
Basically, you drink a slug of mercury and you sit on the toilet, because it is so massive that it effectively pushes it's way through your intestines and blows out your bowel.
Not recommended in these days, but it didn't kill people to do that back in those days.
The vapor is far more dangerous and a mercury salt compound like mercuric chloride is FAR more deadly than elemental mercury because the salt compound can react with many other compounds and get locked into your body much more readily than the elemental mercury.

Plus at the end of the day, you don't know how deep it is, the same way a small tiny puncture may like like a minuscule dot on ur finger but could be deep enough to bleed.

Mercury isn’t that dangerous, only toxic if you inhale its vapor on let it enter your blood stream.
Even with cuts on your fingers its not going to enter your bloodstream readily. Its too dense for that. Drinking it makes it pass through your system. Its really not the boogeyman people think it is (the organometallic compounds on the other hand..). Its quite harmless, unless you start heating it up and inhaling the vapors.

I have touched mercury before with my bare skin. It feels fluid, and cool, and it pushes back - not like jello or anything - instead you can feel how heavy and dense it is, and it takes a little extra force to push your fingers into it. It doesn't stick to the skin, but after you touch it, your skin oil shows on what used to be a shiny surface. It is almost impossible to scoop enough up in two or three fingers to hold and pour back. It's just so slippery and heavy, it just flows away. I was never able to lift up any. If you just lightly press into it, it feels sort of like how a partially-filled ziplock bag of water feels, only with no friction or resistance at all. If you try to stir it, like it was water, that doesn't work. Your fingers just push through it frictionlessly, and the stuff doesn't seem to spin in the container. Or, if it did, I could not tell any motion. It is unbelievably heavy, trying to pour it back into the bottle, or to lift the bowl.
Yes, I washed my skin several times after doing this, and I was careful I had no cuts or openings. No, it does not get trapped under the fingernails. At least it did not on me. The surface tension is far too great for that.

There are different types of mercury. Some are like this, where they're relatively safe to touch.
Others can be absorbed into your skin THROUGH latex gloves. And, it just so happens that those tend to be the more toxic variants of mercury.
Look up the channel Chubbyemu. He has a video of a researcher who had the unfortunate experience of getting some of that mercury onto her hand.

when I was a kid we used to break thermometers just to get the mercury out of them and play with it. I used to break multiple ones and watch the ball of mercury join other balls to make a bigger ball and slide it around the table. No internet or cellphones back then so everything we did was safe and healthy.

I was five years old when I was playing with a broken thermometer on my bed. I came across this beautiful water like substance which was shining more than usual. It felt peculiar when the bedsheet was not able to absorb this substance. I tried to press this substance so that it would get absorbed, to my surprise it broke into two and started moving in different directions. Thats when I knew I fucked up. To make things worse my mom caught me in the crime scene red handed. Her maternal instincts took over and she used her hands to get rid of that substance. She immediately rushed back to examine my mouth beating my back to initiate reverse peristalsis 🧐 the entire family had gathered in the room by then. I was rushed to the hospital just to be sure that I had not swallowed it. When I reached home I let out a sigh of relief, but to my horror we came to understand that mom's gold ring was missing(dad's gift). The conclusion made was that the mercury reacted with that gold ring which fell somewhere on the way to the hospital. I am 23 and still get blamed for all this. This is my mercury story!!!!

I do feel like I should say this. My brother once broke a thermostat, he messed with the Mercury for about 30 minutes. He had no cuts or bruises, yet realized as time when on the Mercury was starting to have less mass, until at one point it was gone and he had silver on his hands. He was in the hospital for fifteen days and occaisionally went back due to knocking a pocket of Mercury from inside him loose before he died in 2019 (rip). Basically what I’m trying to say is, given enough time, Mercury will indeed absorb into your skin. Edit: he was 17 and didn't die from the mercury.
May he rest in peace. God bless you for that story warning us of it.
