This song is written to Amanda about her friend Neal Casal who committed suicide in 2019

Everything he does is golden, from great lyrics to great guitar playing, from the truckers to the 400 Unit, one of the new country guard

As others have noted, Amanda lost someone she was once very close to. I was at one of their shows that week and during her opening set she read off a suicide prevention hotline number to the crowd. You could tell she was struggling, but still put on an amazing show. Beautiful song by Jason about trying to figure out how to help someone dealing with a loss.

I knew of the loss of Neal Casal and that due to tours together he and Amanda had become close friends. When he left the earth the tragic way that he did, obviously she was grieving deeply. To me the song addresses that grieving but also it addresses what it is like as a couple when one the couple has a close relationship and friendship with a person who happens to be a of the opposite sex and with that level of grieving could strain the couples relationship. Here Jason is telling Amanda that he understands and she can feel free to grieve another man, her close friend, without worrying that it will upset him. He just hopes to see her laugh again. Welcome his memories, share the stories…

I believe he wrote this for Amanda after a friend of hers died by suicide. The part about him visiting and bringing St Peter’s autograph infers that he had been to heaven. That would be comforting to many as some Christians think suicide denies entry.

I would _really_ love a reaction to Jason Isbell's song "Overseas", "Only Children" or "Dreamsicle"!

Those were all tremendous songs. I love the acoustic version of Overseas he did on Rick Rubin's show

Hi Don, I've liked Jason since his Drive-by-Trucker days, I was sad when he left the band, but he has so much talent he was destined to be a solo artist. This is a wonderful thought provoking song as are most of Jason's stuff. ---UTCM

The “isbul” thing is just a southern accent. Plenty of people say “Is bell” even in Nashville!

She is still haunted by his ghost…she misses her friend that passed away. Jason tells her: it is not me that commited suicide…I am right here. But at the same time he gives her the time to process it.

St Peter greets people at heaven's gate. So the lyrics are asking if her friend could return from heaven--even for a visit--would that be enough? Instead of saying that directly, Jason is asking ---what if your friend brought you St Peter's autograph?

To echo what so many have said, her friend's suicide is what this is about.... I'm going to share my experience with the song though, not that it matters and there are millions of similar stories.
I was raised by my grandparents, and my best friend came into my life shortly before I turned 18, and he helped, a lot. He was a good 20yrs older than I, and had three kids of his own and always told them and others that I was his fourth kid.
What brought he and I together, was music. He was a musician himself and I think he would've liked Jason a lot, had I ever been able to share it with him. We talked every day for almost 10 years, either phone call or text (he was in MA, and I'm in PA.) And sometimes our conversations would just be sharing songs to each other. He suffered a lot of mental health issues, and addictions, I just had/have severe depression. We went through many ups and downs together and I can say, and paraphrasing Jason here, I talked him off the roof several times.
I was working in a restaurant in 2019 when I discovered Jason via the chef, but I never really listened to his stuff. In November of 2019, I was scheduled to have carpal tunnel surgery done and had to take a few days off of work. The day before my surgery, I was woken up to not my alarm, but a phone call. It was a friend of my best friend. He'd called to break it to me that my best friend was driving to his girlfriend's house the night before and got into an accident that he didn't survive.
It broke me for a very long time, and the make it so much worse, I found out from his girlfriend that he had been secretly planning on coming to see me on Thanksgiving, it would have been our first ever in person meeting.
After all of that, Covid happened and I was laid off on lockdown for four months, in that time I rediscovered Jason and this song, and felt like it had been picked out for me to hear, from my best friend, who was an atheist that didn't believe in ghosts.

The bookends in this song and the way that last verse ties it all together in that payoff…ugh. A gut punch

I have not got caught up yet with all of your reviews and reactions (good job!). I noticed you have done a lot of Colter Wall's tunes but I did not see if you did his song _Codeine Dream_

Could you listen to TVA by Jason Isbell and the 400 unit? The version that I like is the one live from Alabama. And this is Nick from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This was easy to understand what the story was without knowing the history behind it to me but what a selfish partner he is to Amanda. To love someone enough to be so selfish he is truly her friend first
