HA" stands for High Availability. FortiGate High Availability is a feature that provides redundancy and failover capabilities to ensure continuous and uninterrupted operation of the firewall in case of hardware failures, network issues, or other unforeseen events.
Key aspects of FortiGate High Availability include:
1. Active-Passive and Active-Active Modes:
Active-Passive Mode: One FortiGate unit operates as the primary (active), while the other is in standby (passive) mode. If the active unit fails, the passive unit takes over.
Active-Active Mode: Both FortiGate units actively process traffic, providing load balancing and redundancy. In the event of a failure, the remaining unit takes over the full traffic load.
2. Heartbeat Interfaces:
FortiGate devices in an HA cluster use dedicated heartbeat interfaces to communicate with each other. These interfaces monitor the health and status of each unit.
3. Configuration Synchronization:
Configuration settings are synchronized between the FortiGate units to ensure consistency. Changes made on one unit are replicated to the other to maintain a coherent configuration.
4. Link Monitoring:
Monitors the health of interfaces and links between FortiGate units. If a monitored link fails, the system can take appropriate actions, such as triggering a failover.
5.Session Pickup (Active-Active):
In Active-Active mode, FortiGate units can pick up and continue processing sessions initiated through the failed unit, enhancing continuity and user experience.
6. Priority and Role Settings:
Each FortiGate unit in an HA cluster has a priority value, determining its role as the primary or secondary unit. Priority values help determine which unit becomes the active unit.
