    Greetings from the Miyagishima Family! My Dad "Tak" was one of the 1st employees at Panavision and also created the logo. If you ever have a chance to go back to Panavision, look on any of the "T" series lenses and you will see my Dad's signature. Panavision honored him with this series of lenses and they are phenomenal. This video honors all of the people who have worked so hard to create the best cameras and lenses in the industry.     If you want Panavision on a Budget they have an incredible New Filmmaker Grant where they will provide rental equipment (except anamorphics sadly) free of charge for low-budget filmmakers. I had an opportunity to rent a Millenium (35mm) and and a Primo 24-275mm for a short film production totally free. They told me the camera body was used in Jaws... it's truly an incredible feeling looking through the optical viewfinder of a piece of history like that.!

    Knowledge you share fortunately is never on a budget! Thank you for sharing this look inside the history and future of Panavision. To shoot a narrative feature length film on their lenses and cameras is a supreme bucket list goal for me and a lot of contemporary film makers. The choice they made to discontinue selling their lenses has had such a significant impact on the film industry it’s almost impossible to imagine what would be missing industry wide if they were not a closed developer that had to only answer to profitability, improving their products, and meeting the needs of their customers. They might be working on a level I have yet to be able to budget, but seem to be an embodiment of the phrase “a rising tide lifts all ships “. Your honest enthusiasm for the product line is lurking in most modern film makers so I am happy when you let it shine. This was a really engaging video for an anamorphic film making enthusiast like myself. Thank you!!!!!

    Those C-Series lenses are the peak of the perfect Hollywood look for me. If a film uses Cs, they've already won me over. I'm gonna love the look. If they went through the trouble to choose them, I know they are going for a look to try and please me. As far as other anamorphics go, I feel like I like them based on how similar they can get to a C-Series look.

    I have a tiny lens collection. And it's tiny 16mm lenses with C mount for Angenieux and Schneider. But I have yet to get some of the higher end lenses onto my list. Those include Cooke and Leitz. I doubt Panavision will ever make it.
    The wide zooms used by Wes Anderson really showed me a Anamorphic look (heavy distortion and vignetting) which I have yet to see in an affordable option.

    I'm just a hobbyist now. I still have several Panavision pins and even a belt buckle made by Native Americans. I've been a fan of the 2.35 format most of my life. I guess it's 2.40 now. Super Panavision is simply great too. Thanks.

    These are legendary lenses.. thanks for sharing their history. Often enough, we dismiss these systems as tools of the 'Hollywood elite'. But I'm sure they do (and will continue to) have a place in the world of cinema, if only as an aspirational camera for DOPs getting into the big leagues :)

    Thank you for this. I've always been fascinated with Panavision since I was a kid watching the credits not knowing what it meant. I would love to hear your thoughts on how these stack up with our current modern anamorphics.

      They are completely different tools. They overlap in the sense that they're both anamorphics, and they're all lenses. But that's about it. There's a lot to a name. :P

    They have lots of off menu anamorphics too 🙂 only long range front element anamorphic zooms. Just tested their 42-425 anamorphic zoom for a movie. Such an amazing lens!

    Man I love this episode as Panavision are my favourite lenses too! Specifically the T series. I was lucky enough to try one at BSC in London at the Panavision stall. They had the lenses on a non Panavision camera there. But anyway Panavision lenses are magical and I plan to shoot with one one day. ;)

    Knives Out wasn’t shot on the Primo 70s. It was shot on the Alexa Mini on Master Primes and Panavision Super 35 Zooms. There was one shot on 35mm film and one shot on the Alexa 65 that might have been shot on the Primo 70. The shot filmed on the Alexa 65 was during the car chase when it pans from Chris Evens to Ana de Armas. That is a digital pan that’s why the 65 was used.

      @@photomaticzzz Technically, any Panavision lens can be used with any camera, as long as Panavision is approving of it. Because then they can change mounts on the camera. :P

    ZEISS, Nikon and Canon also makes lenses for semiconductor lithography. With Zeiss lenses, and mirrors being used by ASML, while Nikon and Canon makes their own machines.

    Tito, I've seen a lot of Panavision lenses being used in Arri Alexa. Are there any issues with compatibility in this situation?

      The Alexa has to have its mount replaced to a PV mount so the lenses can go on it!

    Dune Part One was filmed with the ULTRA VISTA Series and it looks amazing. I was disappointed to see the Part Two made on spherical lenses (the Helios 44-2). It looks good, but it lost the magic of the panavision anamorphic.

      @@AnamorphicOnABudget don't worry I've been using it myself in a professional environment and that's the only reason I picked it up 😂. I've realised it doesn't do well when something is said relatively quiet to the rest of a sentence or when something doesn't come through with super strong pronunciation, which leads to the AI over-correcting and pronouncing areas that don't really need to. It's definitely not a problem with your speech so don't worry about that. One thing I found to be useful is using a strong denoise pass available in whichever software you're using with white noise areas completely silent, then stack it with the AI denoise and play with the levels. Starting at 50/50 (eg. -8db/-8db) then pushing towards to AI track as much as possible without it being noticable. Realise it sounds like a lot of work but it actually only takes a couple seconds to do one you have the audio tracks in front of you. (Totally forgive you for using the software btw, I'm an editor by trade and don't care much for perfect audio so definitely does the job).

      @@editingsecrets Nothing like that, just whatever is available. I use Adobe Auditions 'Noise Reduction' and occasionally 'DeNoise' in Premiere. They both do the same thing with different levels of accuracy. All I'm referring to is something that will do a basic job of audio correction without too much work/distortion so that when played at the same time as the AI audio it sounds a little bit more natural.

    Huh. Of all my years reading and hearing about anamorphics, I don't think I've seen what they actually did to remove the infamous "mumps" from the tech. It has always been written as "yeah, early anamorphics had mumps. Panavision solved it". And nothing more detailed than that.

    I disagree that there's no point reviewing Panavision lenses. These are some of the best lenses in the world with incredible latitude and image quality. Anyone can rent them (so long as they have the budget and production insurance).

    While it's true that 1100 dollars after inflation is 12000 in 2023 money. It's not the equivalent buying power. The average annual salary of a household in 1954 was about 3000 dollars a year. A typical house would cost 6000-7000 dollars. So saying that you'd drop a 3rd of your family's annual income to buy a lens is ... well it's something else entirely.

    Hi I have a question which is unrelated with your video. I just got a Sirui 35 1.8 1.33x paired with GH5. I also have a monitor that can preview desqueeze to 1.33. I activated the preview anamorphic on GH5. But I see an option on the camera for anamorphic 4:33 which I think will record the entire sensor which gave me a higher vertical recording. But I did notice the entire image is so wooble a lot. I did turn on and off the ibis anamorphic and still the same. I think the only way to prevent any wobble is to place it on tripod for stationary shot

    The dual prism variable squeeze is THE secret billion dollar sauce that made Panavision. There is simply no better way to stabilize the squeeze and have a clear image. Their patent gave them exclusive monopoly rights to it. That's why they can be so exclusive get the best films restrict to rent, non compatible mounts ect.
    Patents are much longer lasting these days. If the panavision prisms patent would expire, it would radically change the scope lens biz. You could have lighter better scope lenses a lot cheaper with standard mounts and professional looks.

      The patents did expire and there are currently 2 non panavision lens series with the focusing method, the Caldwell chameleon 1.8x anamorphic, and the xelmus Apollo 2x anamorphic lenses, the apollos you can get for roughly $16k per lens and the chameleons for roughly $30k per lens

    Pano lenses only rent out with Pano cameras? What about rogue one with used some of those pano70 lenses in conjunctions with an arri65? I could have sworn there are ton of examples of Pano lenses being mounted on arri cameras to be used in modern movies.

      There are, but that's more of a "when you show up with millions of dollars in budget, we might make an exception". Not for the average person trying to rent them out.

      @@AnamorphicOnABudget not going to lie, I was under the assumption that about near everyone that showed up for panavision lenses did so with millions of dollars lol. And I know they are the solid choice for 35(and 16)mm cameras which is another place I see a ton of their lenses pop up in credits. Just don't see their digital cameras popping up much in cinematography Oscar noms. Much less often than the lenses at least.

      @Anamorphic on a Budget Yeah I have no intentions of renting a Panovision lens. But I did look it up and yes you can adapt Panovision lenses to Canon EF and RF but the adapters are very expensive as well.

    I'm shooting a short firm for a my school we gotta student film festival 2024. We shot something and despite good acting and being 4K wide angle ( ursa mini 4.6 ) still have that cheese home video look. Followed tons of guides from youtubers. Done all the tips, it seems we're probly using the wrong lens. But it's not just me all of you youtubers none of you seem to be able to get that movie look ether.

      The Panavision look? A lot of the final look comes from lighting, atmosphere, and color correction. Most youtube folks will cheese the lighting (myself included most times)! hahaha

      90% of cinematography is ***lighting*** Obviously lenses and cameras are important to make a movie look "not like a home video," but using better lenses does not magically make footage look better.
      I've only been out of film school for a couple years, and using the same cameras and lenses as before, it's staggering to see how much better my footage looks after slowly improving my lighting skills.
      Unfortunately, getting a "cinematic look" doesn't seem to be as easy as "use better lenses;" rather I think it's the result of a lifetime of constant practice perfecting your craft, and mostly focusing on the most important thing: lighting!

      Apple is for the prosumer market, not the professional market, as per your own comment, working with businesses would put panavision as being professional

To me, the bar for a company to be apple like is to be in the liminal space between consumer and professional aka the prosumer market while being unaffordable at the same time., Arri is by all accounts professional, same as Sony, they market to the market as such, theyre not in the prosumer market like red, black magic, or well, sony. Things are not black and white between the consumer and professional, and I'd argue that for a large portion of it's market that not even apple is professional

      I think they technically did before they went rental only, in the form of the superama for 16mm film lenses that intentionally doubles as a projection scope, targeted at amateur filmmakers at the time

      Debatable with lenses, especially since most DPs choose lenses based on their aesthetic characteristics as opposed to just their optical quality.

      There was no voice before the Adobe thing. It was ALL noise. A rental house is not a great place to record voice. :P
