    Thank's for the great vid. You did a excellent job on your kitbox. I used too fly Homers but have been out of the game for sum time. I think I'll build myself a double kitbox and get sum rollars. It will be nice too relax in the backyard on a lounge chair and watch them fly. Your a luckey man too have the carpenter skills to build such nice kitboxes. Hope too get sum update videos of your rollers. I live in Ohio and there are quite a few guy's who fly. All the best from my house too yours.

    The first few baby's seem like they take for ever .every spring I wait and wait for the weather to break . Then finally a set of eggs or two. By the end of summer I'm putting wooden eggs under and wondering if I will sell them all. Great luck to you and keep enjoying them.

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      680ecks Yea know what you mean mate, seems to take forever for them to get out of the nest and flying. splitting up the birds soon anyway, should have enough young uns when this round is done. cheers.

    Birds are looking great mate. I don't suppose u live any where near mold north Wales do ya rollers ain't that easy to get old of over here lots of homers no rollers lol :)

      @LozHarrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason Bentley Thanks Mate about 55 mile form Mold but I do travel to Widnes a fair bit which aint far from you.
      I'm going to be getting rid of some young birds quite soon. Planned on breeding 30 ish because I thought not all of them would be good rollers but as it turns out they are pretty much all very good and getting better the older they get, ive now bred 50 !! which I have decided is way too many to keep as the boxes are getting a bit cramped and it takes ages to manage them all. Got 70 birds in total with the older birds so its got a bit out of hand lol.

    Can I ask what the wires are for around your garden fences? Are they to stop the pigeons landing on the fence or to keep cats out? I love your idea to use the wide plastic down curved pipes for the trap. I am going to try that with my birds!

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Kinnear Hi Jason, The wires are strong fishing line and i put it there really to stop the sparrow hawks when they are flying low over the gardens hunting. I have had one try to take a bird off the roof before the line was put up. If they home in on a bird on the roof they will get a surprise now and if they spot the line it will take away the chance of them taking a bird. And yes it also stops the birds sitting on the fence. The pipe trap for the birds works great as well, as soon as they go through once they use it all the time,you can just leave it open if you have a bird out on its own too.Cheers.

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks assh, I dont know much about the high flying breeds mate and if they are supposed to kit together like rollers, But most pigeons will fly in a group if they are flown together day in day out, it takes a while for rollers to kit tight together but its just patience and keeping to a routine with them. Cheers.

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jamie Holloway Hi Jamie, Its a nice hobby to have, With closed rings the birds are rung in the nest around 8-10 days old and the bird gets that ring for life, but you can fit split rings to birds at any age. If you join a club you use their rings with the club ID and the birds number which is recorded by the club and if it goes missing then found the club will know who's bird it is and contact you. If you intend to fly the birds in competition you need a club ring on the bird. You can also buy your own id rings online with your initials and a number for instance, That's what i did when i started. I also fit split rings to my birds with my phone number on them and its worked a few times now when birds got lost people have found them and called me.

    I used to have pigeons when I was a child in my country, ( I lived in countryside). I'm wondering if it's legal or acceptable to have a large group of pigeons in your back yard when we live in cit and pigeons might be pooping on top of everything. I really don't have to get neighbor complained.

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alot of people in citys keep pigeons Will and if you train them they wont be sitting on other peoples houses causing problems.

    • @willtran3677
      @willtran3677 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I'll try to have a group of them. They're very loyal and never leave us. Even though we don't feed them enough food they fly away to find some food and come back every evening.

    It's funny when I was a kid it was 6$ for young pair 10$ for old pair. No one wanted to start young pairs. Now for some reason people want young birds.
    Then they get two sets of eggs and split them. Got to let them go about 8 sets to see what your going to get. 2 ndc year the pairs do the best.

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      680ecks I was planning on letting them have 4 rounds each then see what kind of birds they produce, sunday I was given a pair of older stock birds from a top flyer and one of his stock cocks, these are also now paired up and im letting other birds rear their first round of eggs so should get 4 rounds or more from these also, Didnt want too big an age difference between the young birds this year mainly the reason im going to stop after this round with some of them.

    As a kid we used to call these birds TUMBLERS, does anyone really know why they actually tumble. I take it that the word TUMBLER and ROLLER, Is a local name. Not too many lofts around these days, great pity, my old man kept racing pigeons all his life, actually they were his life, sure he thought more of his birds than us, was a full time job for him

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Edwards The rolling is a result of cross breeding over many years kind of a defect really, tumblers and rollers are much different birds in the UK. A true roller will fly for up to an hour and hopefully roll frequently and quite deep,and in time with the rest of the birds. A tumber usually just does flicks and the odd roll but flys for much longer being a bigger bird. Some guys aim to have them flying for 24 hours at a time. My grandad also lived for his pigeons as did his mates who visited him, there where at least 10 lofts along our road when i was a kid. I think only 2 now.

      ***** Ah, I guess you've learnt then. Sorry, I'm part of a pigeon rescue page, they're quite pushy about responsible breeding and contraceptives.

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually had my own pigeons when i was 10 years old also spent alot of time with my grandfather who had a passion for his, so I do know a fair bit about them, its not that one year old birds are not old enough to breed more the cocks are inexperienced at treading the hens and you end up with hit and miss hatches.

    • @Zebra-dogs

      ***** Oo, sorry, I must have come across quite harsh, sorry about that...I don't doubt you know what you're doing at all.

    are most of ur birds inbred? and how many birds did u start off with

    • @LozHarrop
      @LozHarrop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Average Teen I started with 8 birds which were all related and i have bred off these, I later got 3 more pairs but all related again off the same breeder. I have not bred mother to son or father to daughter or brother to sister so all birds are cousins etc you can breed close like mother son but not too many times as you get problems with the chicks being weak and malformed. thats why ringing birds and keeping records is a must so you know who is related to who.

      +Average Teen write down parents ring numbers and when you ring their chicks write them down with their parents then you know they are brother sister mother son etc. just like a family tree, the next year you can cross those young birds with another pairs young or the young of another pair to a different older pair, thats the way i do it. thats why its important to keep breeding records also you can note down the number of really good birds when they start flying and rolling so you can see how they are related and if they are not brother and sister you could pair them up and probably get good birds off them. that works the other way too, if a pair produce not very good young birds dont breed them together again swap them around and pair them with other birds. once you find a pair that produces great birds you have reached the place that all pigeon men want to get to. They will become your stock birds and should be looked after really well.
