  • Bob Dylan covers SHADOWS by Gordon Lightfoot - Edmonton, Alberta.October 2012.
Shadows (song by Gordon Lightfoot - Bob said it was a request,
Bob on grand piano, Donnie on pedal steel, Stu on acoustic guitar, Charlie on dobro) October 10, 2012
Once again, Bob Dylan did not perform anything from his new album at his concert in Edmonton, Alberta, last night. However, fans witnessed something even more special.
Dylan played an unexpected "request" at the show, according to a post at Bob Links. It was the live premiere of "Shadows," a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.
Dylan has been a big supporter of Lightfoot's, even covering "Early Morning Rain" on 1970's "Self Portrait," and performing "I'm Not Supposed to Care" on stage. Lightfoot, like Dylan, was managed by Albert Grossman.
In 1986, Dylan inducted Lightfoot into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame, where he called the singer "someone of rare talent." (Check out this video.) Lightfoot also made an appearance at a Rolling Thunder Revue's Maple Leaf Garden show in 1975, and his cover of "Ballad In Plain D" appeared in the film "Renaldo & Clara." He also performed "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and more recently covered "Ring Them Blues" on the album "Waiting For You," according to Dylan Cover.
Dylan praised Lightfoot many times, once saying, "He became a mentor for a long time. I think he probably still is to this day."
Dylan had this to say about Lightfoot, and "Shadows," in 2009:
Bill Flannigan: Who are some of your favorite songwriters?
Bob Dylan: Buffett I guess. Lightfoot. Warren Zevon. Randy (Newman). John Prine. Guy Clark. Those kinds of writers. ...
BF: You and Lightfoot go way back.
BD: Oh yeah. Gordo's been around as long as me.
BF: What are your favorite songs of his?
BD: "Shadows," "Sundown," "If You Could Read My Mind." I can't think of any I don't like. www.examiner.co...

Love the grit in Bob's voice. His fans don't love him for his "beautiful" voice; but he brings a singular vocal vibe that lends passion and power to his original works and to the many he chooses to cover.

Char, thanks for posting this! But he has nothing over Gordon!
That is just a beautiful song, but with his raspy voice , certainly did no justice to it!
I remember hearing Dylan when I was just a kid .way before i discovered Gordon. And I never liked his music or voice even then!
I know Gordon thinks the World of him. But Gordon had a wonderful voice and fantastic songwriter . far superior to Dylan's work!!!

Beautiful. At the end Dylan said, "..as a request..I thought I'd give it a try". Very humble as his craggy, blown out voice suits this Lightfoot gem, which Dylan obviously admires.

Craggy, blownout out voice.Definitely a good description of an 83 year old Dylan. He has gone full circle in his voice(as it sounded in the early part of his career til now, pretty beat up).
I have covered many Gordon Lightfoot songs and Bob Dylan songs.Somehow,at 74,I just heard Shadows and I had to learn it.
I wonder who that woman is,in the background.Gordon always had the most beautiful women around him.And Mr.D as well.Come to think of it,I would too,if I were a handsome famous singer.
I wayched Gordon get out of a saab or Volvo station wagon out back of Tanglewood,Ma.and 4 or 5 women got out all carrying bunches of flowers.Apparently he had dpent the day roaming the berkshires with a "bevy of beauties" at his side.He sure lived life fully.
He headed straight to the back of the performance stage(he was late),where I was sitting. He sat down and offered me the rest of his beer.First Fosters I ever drank. He said,"I really dont need this"
Of course,a young me ,(23 or 24) was in a bit of shock. He and Woody Guthrie were my musical heros.Dylan came later. Looking back on my own particular path musically,it seems odd that Dylan came much later to me.
I bought Gordon's song book(the one where it looks like he is chewing on flower.)I still have it,though is tattered and torn with usage over the years.
I found Dylan when I was 30 or so.I have gone through two of Lyrics, the grey covered compendium .The first one mysteriously dissappeared,so I bought a second, updated copy.I still have that, though it also suffered the same fate as Gordon's books.
Dylan hung out at Gordon's,I have heard.
If I would page through my own songbook of covers, there are three authors that stand out:Robert Z,Gordon L.,and G.Brown, the Iowan troubador.Peace,y'all!

this recording of Dylan was 14 years ago. The woman is Cathy Coonley, Gordon's partner back then and mother of his son Eric at the Rosedale neighbourhood home in TOronto in December 1975 after the ROlling Thunder shows.

Further proof that when His Bobness really cares about what he's singing, his voice can be just fine. He can turn "it" on and off at will. And given his admiration for Gord, no surprise that this was one of those times he switched it "on"...eh?

I am not keen on Bob Dylan's voice, also I think he puts a staccato jerky rhythm into this song which adds to a sense of malfunction. BUT I applaud Bob Dylon because he he shows he loves the magic of Gordon Lightfoot . When I sing and play this wonderful song I can never quite match the voice , the rhythm and the gentle atmosphere of the original, but I have to try! again and again.
