Chinese opera uses lots of metaphors , similes and dramatized insinuations. The singers voices in different twists, turns, prolongations all indicate emotional states which can not be verbally made explicit. I am a literature major and my drama professor used to say that Chinese opera is the most sophisticated. He is American.
