I think i came just listening to the horns, trombones/barritones, and trumpets. I'm a horn player, and trumpet player, this piece is something me, and some of my friends should learn, and play for our directors
The Euphonium solo is so beautiful in this piece. I love the way it flows, and I'm currently looking for a solo piece (preferably trombone) that has a "similar feel" in terms of it's style. Does anyone have recommendations that they'd be willing to share?
omg i'm getting chills!! we had to play this in high school and the song was one of the most challenging songs ever!! it's a beautiful composition nonetheless...
I just want to let anyone who doubts a jr high band can play this, I assure they can. I was in Marshall Jr. High in Clovis NM and my varsity band played it. We took it to contest, and won second place. This was 1999/2000 and the band was directed by Cory Trout. I have loved this song ever since.
Not all band-nerds are major dweebs! And I completely agree, that's the most popular topic I ever hear, and it pisses me off. It irks me that I can't go anywhere in my band room without hearing a Flute player and a Saxophone player arguing over which is better. I thankfully don't think any is more important.
We played this in 2000 in marching band and won state finals. Search Greenwood Marching Woodmen 2000 State Finals. Was my favorite of all 4 years :) Sorry horn players but I have to be partial to Drumline as I marched snare 4 years :P
That's so cool, tell him that my high school band the Golden Valley Cardinal Regime is playing it for symphonic band, well the great locomotive chase....and I love it. :)
Wow this could easily be turned into a marching band show... We performed The Quest for our show this year. The Quest really stands out from Robs other music. For example, the winds of poseidon has very similar characteristics of the great locomotive chase. sometimes. I almost said the iliad then i wouldve felt ignorant. but i still like the peice. I would to play this for our show. I know our directors would more than likely turn the solos into horn solos if they arent already are...
at my high school we have played all of the divine comedy, earning all superior every year but we have yet to play this.We are considering it for this year. and nilesdance by holsinger, urban dances by erik morales, and the trombone king.
Sounds so similar to Songs of Sailor and Sea, which I'm proud to declare my High School Wind Ensemble is playing this. Which is odd because I have no idea why my director would pick that piece for a Christmas concert.
Every instrument is important to an ensemble. Yes, the French Horns may have sounded nice in this piece, but so did every instrument! :) This is my absolute FAVORITE composition of R.W. Smith's, well, besides Encanto, because I played that one. :3 I love long compositions!
Thanks I first thought it was a horn, but I was actually talking about my own orchestra (as you could see in my comment before the one about a cello), we play it too but the solo in the beginning is done by a cello, bu I accidentally posted the second part of the comment too late...
I'm in eighth grade (trombone) and we played it. To say it's a challenge is more than an understatement- the time put into it (3 months) was well worth the final product.
@ProGamblerCauthon I noticed that too. I think it's because Poseidon was also the storm bringer in Greek myths, so wind would make sense. Although I agree with you; it's a little misleading. "The Storm of Poseidon" would make more sense.
Mine too sir this one brings back many memories. There is actually a video of when I held the note on the second so long that I did a goofy face that stuck with me for years haha. The funny thing is now that I am older and look back on it the duet with the oboe is actually more difficult but I guess I ignored that in my young mind so never missed it. Haha funny how that works .
In my band, we don't bully other instruments, we're all happy with each other and get the job done. (Thats how my A1 year was, I hope the next ear will be the same for us...)
1234EmilyTheStrange: this all the way. French horn is the best instrument Eva, though I love all instruments. All combine as one to create this beauty...
@dwes2145 other then the solo was this piece fun, i think that i might play this piece this year but im not sure. it the euphonium part fun other then the solos
Saraband and Vivance. I dont remember how they're exactly spelled, but that's the best I can think of. It's the solo I played for All-district and state band.
Robert W Smith is AWESOME!!!!!!
What people don’t realize is that the clarinet part is just a chromatic scale
I think i came just listening to the horns, trombones/barritones, and trumpets. I'm a horn player, and trumpet player, this piece is something me, and some of my friends should learn, and play for our directors
That bassoon part is amazing and hard!!!!!!!!! It's 64 measures with no breathing space!
Brings back memories!! I got to play the opening Euphonium Solo in Chicago at a competition we got first place but still so many memories!!!
Honestly one of my favorite songs I've played ever :)
Love this piece.

yeh
Wow... Words can't describe it.
A friend of mine was talking to me about this piece.
This is truly amazing.
I love Robert W. Smith for his beautiful solos... they make me glad I play an instrument...
This sounds sooooo pretty !!
I like the flute's tornado effect in the beginning :) and the trumpet, and some low brass's "triumphant" sound :D

ah this song brings back memories for me. we did this piece my sophomore year as our marching show. i was a guard girl
Impresionante sinfonía, los efectos en las cuerdas de madera son magníficos, y la percusión también buenísima
omg i'm getting chills!! we had to play this in high school and the song was one of the most challenging songs ever!! it's a beautiful composition nonetheless...
I played in a Symphony
R.I.P Woodwind in this song.
It brings so many emotions ...
=D
We played this song in my high school band, I played bass clarinet. One of my favorite songs I've ever played.
Ugghhh Why does he make such awesome music!?!?!?!?!?
This was one badass composition.,loved playing this one...so fun....those 32 nd notes were tough though!!!
AWWWWWWW THEY CREATED A SONG ABOUT ME!!!! i luv the whirling tubes part for some reason. anyway....HAIL ME AND THIS SONG!!!!!!

What in the world did your Director make you do!?
We broke so many of those stupid things .. they were flying all over the place the first time we tried it ha
love it!
it takes every section of a band to make something as cool as this.
Very true.....good on ya mate
EUPHONIUMS!!!!!! YESSSSS PLAYED THIS MY SENIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL!!!!

Muitoooooo Fodaa!!!!!
Zeus, Hades, and the goddess of bitches and P.M.S., Hera disliked this.
R.I.P Robert w Smith 😔
Yeah, I found out recently that he passed away
Wow, it's unsurprisingly happy!
We played this in 2000 in marching band and won state finals. Search Greenwood Marching Woodmen 2000 State Finals. Was my favorite of all 4 years :) Sorry horn players but I have to be partial to Drumline as I marched snare 4 years :P
I love the brushes that percussion used to make the water sound.
I like this song :D
Loara high school needs to play this. We just scored 3 1's and 1 2 at regionals. Hellz yeah
Yeah, says the guy that was never in the 4th period band
That's so cool, tell him that my high school band the Golden Valley Cardinal Regime is playing it for symphonic band, well the great locomotive chase....and I love it. :)
i really like the beginning to this song
Wow this could easily be turned into a marching band show...

Robert W. Smith is beast. I play trumpet.

my high school band is playing this for our spring concert. only not as fast.
at my high school we have played all of the divine comedy, earning all superior every year but we have yet to play this.We are considering it for this year. and nilesdance by holsinger, urban dances by erik morales, and the trombone king.

right you are! Who doesn't know Percy Jackson? 😛 What horn do you play?
Caroline Simons I love the Percy Jackson movies
THEY R SO GOOD!!
:D! I remember doing the Oboe solo out of it. Loved it and love the piece
8th grade, we're gonna play this :) we just got it today
Sounds so similar to Songs of Sailor and Sea, which I'm proud to declare my High School Wind Ensemble is playing this. Which is odd because I have no idea why my director would pick that piece for a Christmas concert.
@burns174 persis by james hosay? we played that for one of our marching shows as well.
Every instrument is important to an ensemble. Yes, the French Horns may have sounded nice in this piece, but so did every instrument! :) This is my absolute FAVORITE composition of R.W. Smith's, well, besides Encanto, because I played that one. :3 I love long compositions!
I totally agree with you! (:
Today was our first day trying out the singing part. I think there's a reason why we're in orchestra, and not in choir.
Robert W Smith is my advisor in college! He is also one of my professors. Am I lucky?? He is at Troy University, Troy, AL
essa musica e excepcionalela e dmais
7:13 You can feel those trumpets coming in.
And at 6:13
I like by loch and mountain and to challenge the skies and heavens above
Thanks I first thought it was a horn, but I was actually talking about my own orchestra (as you could see in my comment before the one about a cello), we play it too but the solo in the beginning is done by a cello, bu I accidentally posted the second part of the comment too late...

Wow...Those notes that go like..Ba dum ba dumbabadumba must be like....Hard.
I'm in eighth grade (trombone) and we played it. To say it's a challenge is more than an understatement- the time put into it (3 months) was well worth the final product.
+riles k Trombones Rule! We just got "The Great Locomotive Chase" (by the same person) but our band isn't very good....so yeah....
I play 1st Trombone and "The Great Locomotive Chase" was the must fun song I have played so far. I played it in 7th grade.
riles k I want to bug my band director to let us play this song
I want to make a cartoon using this piece
@ProGamblerCauthon I noticed that too. I think it's because Poseidon was also the storm bringer in Greek myths, so wind would make sense. Although I agree with you; it's a little misleading. "The Storm of Poseidon" would make more sense.
I remember in percussion we played rock paper scissors during rehearsal because we always cut off right before we'd have to come in.
it's not very often that we hear a piccolo flute and bass clarinet duet
my french horn solo!!!
Vocês tem que ver o mestre Peterson Maxwell Maxwell tocando essa música do eufônio.. é lindo
@SikPrODCtIoNs yea!!!!
WOOT!!! LOW BRASS!!!
Euphonium solo in the beginning is haunting
Shit still slaps hard

In my band, we don't bully other instruments, we're all happy with each other and get the job done. (Thats how my A1 year was, I hope the next ear will be the same for us...)
@014ladydevils
Mhm. Oboe, eupho, and pic solos with duets of flute/b.c., trumpet/trombone, and trumpet/horn if I remember correctly.
I played the piccolo and contra duet by ear and perfected it in 4 days. I love this song!
@MarIenaMisery O_o it did? now i'im a little worried.... i just started oboe this year (junior year)
@uofi12345666 Some of the best songs are made for middle schools, usually in Texas, New Mexico or Indiana. It just depends.
1234EmilyTheStrange: this all the way. French horn is the best instrument Eva, though I love all instruments. All combine as one to create this beauty...
@dwes2145 other then the solo was this piece fun, i think that i might play this piece this year but im not sure. it the euphonium part fun other then the solos
ooh the only song by robert w smith weve ever played was the tempest....... i wish we played this...
fucking awesome, I just played that solo at the beginning earlier in band and had to listen to it from professionals. It's so fucking awesome :D
yes those are voices
Saraband and Vivance. I dont remember how they're exactly spelled, but that's the best I can think of. It's the solo I played for All-district and state band.
@SuperAwesomeTacoNess Haha exactly!(:
@boltnut33 Omg kid. I played this song in 10th grade and got a 96. and our band is EPIC. so did you possibly play a variation of the song?
How do you know my schools trumpet section so well..
The arrangement is written for the solo at 4:47 to be played on Fluegel horn. This is a trumpet. Well played though. The Fluegel sounds better.
we're playing this with my orchestra
Is that there a Horn solo starting out the piece??? HORN FOR LIFE AMIRITE?
Crykenpie yes you are my friend. Just a got a $5900 Holten Silver horn and it plays fantastically.
6th or 7th??? What are you smoking. So fun to play on trumpet
One of our songs for marching band! ( not the whole song of course )
+diana reyna it's awesome
@Frankntooth88 i with u
