Attempt to demolish mosque in Shimla, Himachal: Politics of religious polarization and negative role of media
The recent attempt to demolish a mosque in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh by Hindu fundamentalist organizations has become a topic of discussion across the country. This incident is not only a symbol of religious intolerance, but the role of media in it is also critical, which worked to incite the mob. In today's era, media is a powerful medium, which can play an important role in taking the society in the right direction, but many times it works to incite the society due to misinformation and provocation. Due to the negative influence of media, an atmosphere of fear is being created among the minorities.
    Negative role of media
The way the media reported this incident in Shimla raises many questions. Many channels broadcast news without verification to sensationalize the incident, which made the situation more tense. Some media outlets praised the attack on the mosque and tried to show the demand of fundamentalist organizations to demolish the mosque as very normal and incite Hindu-Muslim polarization. This increased misunderstandings among the general public and created a situation of provocation.
The job of the media is to provide accurate and unbiased information to the public, not to incite emotions or do one-sided reporting. But some media houses sensationalize such incidents with the aim of increasing TRP. This is against the basic principles of journalism and works to divide the society. In the Shimla incident also, this attitude of the media worsened the situation, which is a matter of serious concern.
The media should understand its responsibility and take steps towards improving itself.
If the Indian media continues to report anti-minority news one-sidedly, then a complaint should be lodged against them, and the complaint should reach the media authority.
