I ran a drill bit through them to open them up, filled it up with fine coal slag and can not believe the difference!!

I have had one of these for like 15 years and never actually used it. You video has inspired me to go mess with it again and finally get back to work on my '71 Jeep Renegade that I took apart in '04. I did a whole vehicle with it. Yes, it took some time, but I wasn’t in a hurry. But actually, in my experience, it didn’t take too long. I sandblasted my ‘99 Jeep Wrangler & it did great. Same set up with a little bit stronger air compressor than you have but the rest is all the same
I'm gunna pair up two compresser too. Great idea. With all the flow going out /no check valve /won't matter. You was opening the upper ball valves/ Tee Hee/calling it closed. Glad I looked u up!
I openthe bottom vales ti media comes out, then when it clogs I close tank charging value up top and pull releases pressure ring until air enters tank from below thus clearing blockage... then recharge tank and continue... A palm sander ratchet strapped to tank will give you the vibration needed to get even flow of media without shaking it by hand... I've clean a lot of stuff with menards black blast, and sifting thru a screen with palm sander agitation in to a bucket is key to saving on media.. If you have a few smaller compressors run them together with custom splitter and they will all keep up... moisture is a blaster killer, so drain tanks and install a few moisture catches. Also run my ceramic nozzle the same, no valve or dead man..
Yeah I also thought about using some sort of offset motor to clear the jams. But I found out trying different setups that it mostly always clogs in the tip or the choke point not from the tank or media hose. So I swapped the tip out for a larger diameter and with my setup that seems to be working well not much loss at all in pressure or ability to blast. I run coarse media through it now just fine. Sucks that they sell them so you have to mod it to work but that's corporate capitalism.
Great, I do have a lot of CFM (38) and 2 blastcabinets but some large items can only be blasted outside. Now I have used a handheld for a few days which did work but needed constant refill (frustrating on large items) so I looked into these cheap blasters since I only need it 2 or 3 times a year but everybody complained that they constantly clog up. Now I think I can give it a try but I will need an additional pressure regulator since I have only one access point on the outside which has a constant 165psi which is too high for good steady blasting. Also I can confirm that opening the bottom valve only a little works much better since I have such a setup on one blast cabinet and it is barly open for steady work (else it starts puffing). I will definitely follow your advice. Greetings Bernhard

LOL! When I made these videos, I was toying with the idea of dropping it off bridges and blowing it up "Top Gear"style to illustrate my disdain for it. In the end, I was too lazy. Maybe in another video! :)
I have a 33 gallon air tank and ran 'fine' walnut through the blaster. The larger tip works for walnut otherwise the tip keeps plugging up. Also, 105 lbs at least to do nice work with walnut. I could only run for a couple minutes at a time till i had to wait for pressure to build back above 100lbs. Also goes through a bag quick! I ended up removing the valve at the tip and used 1/2 fittings and ball valve at the bottom of the tank to free up flow. This unit works, but was more picky with walnut and i live in a humid region.

I had forgotten about that, LOL, and thought about retaping the entire video, but then thought, naw.... Let's see if anyone notices. I think I taped the entire video about three times, and each had it's own mistake. This version was the final version, and had the least mistakes, but it did have the reversed valves. I figured if I taped it a fourth or fifth time, I would just screw something else up. Since I did it for free, and I wasn't going to squander a whole afternoon on it, I called it a day. Well- you noticed. Nice work. Once I get the first penny of my endless youtube royalties, I'll buy you a cookie.
Rent a 175 cfm compressor from like a Sunbelt Rentals for a day. You can adjust the amount of cfm through the blaster. Also, I recommend a Ameriblaster hose & nozzle setup. You won’t regret it

got a co-worker that has one and i wanted something sandblasted. had problems for 3 days trying to get it to do much of anything and said screw it, ill grind the rust off. it sucked but i got though it. now i know this i can relay this to him and hopefully it works. we did find out its missing a gasket right behind the tip. idk how much it would have changed.
You may have saved the blaster I bought today- Seriously, I have a dumpster. I will check my SCFM tomorrow and if it is 6 or less I will give the tool another try (connecting a second compressor). Also, someone probably already mentioned this, but play sand still contains silica. It is not safer for blasting than regular sand. Silica fibers are small enough to get past respirators. Don't mess around with that stuff.
@@chrisgreenley5927 Kept the blaster. I haven't picked up a larger compressor yet, so it can hang around for at least a little longer. My compressor is only 4 SCFM.

I have the 100 lb. Harbor Freight sandblaster I was about to take back tomorrow. I have it hooked up to a compressor that has 155 lb pressure and 16.4 cfm @ 90lb. Yet out of the tip I only get around 20 lb of pressure it seems like. Even with a 1/2" hose connected I only show 75 lb. pressure on the gauge. The tip about the fittings going in too far may be my problem. I've taken all the fittings out and checked for blockages but, I didn't check for the fittings going in too far. I can get the hose to fill up to the tip. I can get it to come out if I remove the tip. I just can't get any to come out with the tip installed. I'm using the walnut. Not what I really wanted. It was all they had though. It doesn't help that this is the first time I've ever used a sandblaster. I'm really glad I found your video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Good luck, and don't give up! First thing to do-with no abrasives running through- undo the hose clamp and detach the lower heavy gauge hose from the lower mixing valve under the sandblaster. With the hose off, does that fix it? Does air fly out of the lower mixing valve? It should. Ignore the pressure gauge, it will immediately drop 10-15 lbs when the air runs. If air flies out of the valve at a good flow, the problem is probably in the tip (they suck- and I'm going to cover this in new video-there are solutions), or a piece of packing in the lower hose. If not, check for blockage in mixing valve as the video shows. If the lower valve threads aren't going in too far, there are several other areas that can cause trouble. They will be covered in the new video, but that won't be out for several weeks, so write here and we can get you up and running sooner. Let me know if this does not work. This was the single most challenging issue in my case because you can't see it unless you are specifically looking for it. Write back either way please- I'm curious.

I live in a small area and it's kind of hard to find. My issue right now is what is restricting the air flow to the hose tip. I have plenty of pressure going in and almost none coming out of the tip. I took all the fittings apart and replaced the tape and didn't see any blockage. I'll have to check and see if the fittings go in too far.
I haven't used the walnut, but have ordered new tips from a quality supplier that should come in later this week. They should have a much better flow pattern. I will let you know how they work. Keep me updated!

I took the top off and turned the air on and got plenty of pressure in the tank. I took the short hose off and it didn't seem to be blocked. I don't know if the fittings went in far enough to restrict air flow or what restricted air flow. I even connected a 1/2" hose directly to the tank and it felt like there was only around 20 lb of pressure coming out of the hose. I also bought the deadman valve for the hose. I ended up returning it. I didn't feel I should have to work on a product to get it to work. I'll most likely pay more for one to get one that actually works. If I can find out from someone that has had that problem and what caused it I might buy it again. Until then I'll try to find one that works without having to work on it to get it to work. I thank you for being interested in it.
Id maybe put 2 valves inline on the bottom. One adjustment and one shut off. Then id take the handle off the adjustment and hang it on a piece of string so your adjustment doesn't accidentally get moved.
So do you open the tank and the other lever so your air compressor is feeding them all the time? My instructions seemed to suggest you fill the tank and then turn it off but then I’m finding it loses pressure in no time. Maybe that’s what I’ve been doing wrong. I was about to throw it out.
Those ball valves are complete garbage for cutting off sand they just grind in the valve and clog... I ran a heavy duty spring 3/4" push button valve with adapter couplings to 3/8" off the sand supply hose. I hooked that to a regular sand blaster gun and run it with two supplied air lines. It's a two handed deal with one hand to release the sand at the bottom of the gun and one to accelerate it with air from the regular trigger. But even pushing 8cf at 90psi it works 10x better I could probably do a whole car although at a dime sized rate. The nicest thing is it rarely jams.
You know of a bigger one? not a bigger hopper but one that requires more cfm? I got a 30 gal 16hp gas driven compressor that does 34.4cfm at 90 psi with a 1/2 outlet... I was looking for something bigger that can do a spray pattern so I can sandblast inches a second as all these videos with this model are slower than a wire wheel on a drill and more mess.

It does not contain a number in the tractor supply site, however, a search for "black diamond fine coal slag" pulls up on amazon as 20/40. I don't know if it the same or not, but it looks similar. Get rid of the mixing chamber and use a 3/8 in tee and 2 inch nipple. Get a 12 to 14in pvc the almost fits into the nipple. Sand down until you get a snug fit. Drill fairly large holes all the way through the tube the full length of the tube. Insert into the tank and you will get a more even sand flow.
Thank you. I got one of these used for $5.00 at a yard sale. It's been sitting behind my shop for4 years and I finally pulled it out of the weeds. I have an adequate compressor but the performance is dismal. I did a you tube search and your video was towards the top. Excellent explanation on the weak areas. I'll be watching your next video and do these modifications. I have a small utility trailer to strip and repaint.
Ron - thanks so much. I literally took notes on the sequence to start it. The sequence to stop it, and the various errors. In 30 minutes I was blasting away and when the frustrating clogs happened, I just did what you did. Thanks a bunch.
I went out and checked. Central Pneumatic. 68232 part number. El cheapo. I changed the placement in the second video and don't even use regulators on the main line anymore. I would recommend several air dryers in line for best results.

Daddy this is boring,
Get rid of the mixing chamber and use a 3/8 in tee and 2 inch nipple. Get a 12 to 14in pvc the almost fits into the nipple. Sand down until you get a snug fit. Drill fairly large holes all the way through the tube the full length of the tube. Insert into the tank and you will get a more even sand flow.
Thank you. I got one of these used for $5.00 at a yard sale. It's been sitting behind my shop for4 years and I finally pulled it out of the weeds. I have an adequate compressor but the performance is dismal. I did a you tube search and your video was towards the top. Excellent explanation on the weak areas. I'll be watching your next video and do these modifications. I have a small utility trailer to strip and repaint.
Ron - thanks so much. I literally took notes on the sequence to start it. The sequence to stop it, and the various errors. In 30 minutes I was blasting away and when the frustrating clogs happened, I just did what you did. Thanks a bunch.

Probably want to mention the regulator you have on there
I went out and checked. Central Pneumatic. 68232 part number. El cheapo. I changed the placement in the second video and don't even use regulators on the main line anymore. I would recommend several air dryers in line for best results.
