    You should feed them watermelon, chickens really like it. They also tend to like acorns. We sell eggs for ~$5 carton My family's chickens absolutely love acorns, they just love to forage too, and they produce mad eggs after eating acorns. You could also use the compost to grow some corn for them, or other veggies you want to eat. We have a garden and it produces crazy on manure and chicken compost.
    Edit: Don't feed them too many acorns and go for the fresh ones, I read that it Acorns can be toxic if they eat too many, and mold as well as other toxins can get into them. Do your research.

      @@MentalOutlaw Probably, but I haven't tested. Make sure to crack them a bit so it's easier for them to get at it, but they can get through it on their own eventually. Regarding composting; If you are going to use the compost material as fertilizer, you might want to have a kind of a four year rotation thing going on, between four compost piles. It's not strictly necessary, but if you're doing organic farming with four field rotation, it just makes things quite a bit easier. Using too "young" fertilizer that includes faecal matter might lead into unexpected complications due to bacterial and virological issues.

    • @dertythegrower
      @dertythegrower ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ....heh close but its more about the ratio of carbon and nitrogen, depending on plant and the stage of growth.. chicken compost can burn also as its usually stronger... but yes, three to four piles, constanrly rotating and adding it from high up as so air can be between compost piles.. i educate on the topic and moderate potentponics also (top tier educator and grower of aquaponic and many fungal IPO bacteria methods)

    If you are serious about composting, I recommend making a bin(s) with wood pallets for walls. Hell, before you build it, at the bottom you can put PVC pipes with small holes in them to airate the compost at the bottom even when it is covered (ofc, make sure the end of the pipe is on the outside).
    Goodlooks farmbro.

    We have enough space for our chickens to forage. My dad throws grain for them, but they manage without and often leave it on the ground for a long time. What they love far more is digging around our horse's manure. The majority of the day they're there. They also peck at grass and weed leaves a lot. If you can create an environment for worms and bugs to thrive, they'll be eating there all day.

      Btw have you heard of that worm "generator"? I'm not joking, look it up. Its a bunch of compost, the worms try to climb out and fall in to a bucket, which means basically infinite protein for your chickens (the only thing you can't grow). It's not super hard to build, I used to have one.

    If they don't end up liking the pears you should try a maggot farm- poke a few holes in the bottom of the bucket and hang it up where they usually eat amd maggots will eventually come crawling out the bottom. Not sure if it will work with fruit as well as it does with meat etc but just a thought for additional sustainability. Maybe don't try it though if it's too close to your house

    Make sure they're getting enough shell grit and other nutrients. Buy grain in bulk 25kg, shouldn't be too expensive, You also need to look out for mites and other conditions, such as scaly leg.
    Any how, yours look lovely. If you've got the room, you should try planting some pigeon pea, or another nitrogen fixer. Should help field the girls, and will fertilise your soil alongsode the chooks.

      not really a far fetched idea. some local egg companies in my area (northern chile) give fish meal to their chickens (it sounds horrible and smells horrible, but it's stupidly nutritious. basically scrape the ocean and boil to a dust whatever you caught), but the outcome is not really good, it gives the eggs this fishy aftertaste and they stink compared to other eggs from grain-fed chickens. since salmon is a whole different thing, maybe the outcome is far better, who knows

    Try something kinda like designer eggs/chicken. Not fully, it would be too expensive, unless you know you would have a market for that, but kinda like feed them with 30% meat and worms (Depending on what you get from shops/people around. Worms, you could farm your self.), then you could do various combinations, and see how that affect taste (And taste of eggs you have that.).

    Half shuck a cob, exposing 50% of that sweet, sweet corn -- chicken AI will do the rest.

    Plant your chickens some bushes so they are protected from aerial predators.

    Today is the day my windows 10 died. I will live happily from today in the world of free and opensource software, as my 2 laptoos already do.
