  • Do you have to be technically perfect to be a GLORY or UFC champion??? Apparently not because Alex Pereira has a number of things he does "wrong" but he still makes it work for himself against the highest level opponents possible. Today we look at 3 things he does incorrectly and then talk about how sometimes it's okay to break technical rules.
    If you'd like to work on improving your own technique book your virtual 1-on-1 training session with me. For the next few weeks I am offering a limited number of privates to work on your techniques, weaknesses and to help you improve your overall fight game. Book here: GabrielVarga.as.me/

    Pereira has talked about his style of kicking without turning the hips, on a brazilian podcast. He said you have to be in a closer range to kick that way, which leaves you more susceptible to counters, so your defense needs to be on point, but also not turning the hips makes returning to your stance much faster, that allows you be ready to counter when the opponent is throwing back.
    Pretty slick, always ready to counter with that left hook when the opponent is lowering his guard to attack.

    My old kru actually threw jabs and straights the way Pereira throws that weird scrape style of punch. He said that it works well against people who tower guard you because instead of trying to punch through, you can manipulate their guard and in turn shift where their weight is to land kicks on a fully planted opponent. It's odd, but there's definitely a strategy to it. Pereira never seems to follow up on them though with kicks, I think his range just allows for that stuff and gives him so much leverage to really drop his weight into the shots. Great breakdown!

When he is not pivoting he can lands the kick, and when the guy is doing his move(defending or countering) he already can strike right after without the guy expect.
    He said that the pivoting is used to increase the range of motion too but he has a good defense(he stated that with a bad defense you will get hit in the face because of the small distance ) so he can land in a close distance and use that "window of reaction from advesary" after he lands to attack again.

    very nice informative video, I think it boils down to knowing yourself as a fighter and understanding your physical attributes, I see people saying that flicking jab like fury is good and some saying its not good practice, but if you think about it both statements are true because fury has a very long reach so it works perfectly for him, but for shorter fighters with short reach it could mean getting sent to the shadow realm.

    On thing about not pivoting much on your supporting peg for roundhouse that is a bit of an advantage is that you don't have to commit your hip as much and can follow up with punches or even another kick (like Liam Harrison) easier. There is maximum power and then there is enough power to be effective and take advantage of strategies it offers.

    Not turning his hips fits his style (+aforementioned comment on podcast) as well, because he doesn't feint. It makes his kicks less telegraphed.

  • @boblob-law9401
    @boblob-law9401 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Definitely! It's a style catered to his body frame. Tall, long legs/arms, and a short torso. I have a similar frame. Pivoting isn't really necessary for me to land with power. Because of my speed and the weight of my leg, every kick lands with enough power to do damage. Also keeps me in and attacking position too. The second my foot touches the ground again, I'm ready to continue a chained attack. When you pivot and kick you're almost forced to reset.
    On the flip side, pivoting can open up more angles if you're side stepping; However, I find at my size (heavyweight), it just takes too long and it's too choregraphed and easy to identify when I'm pivoting and kicking. When you're tall, you almost can't see a calf kick, it's almost completely out of your field of view. So if I'm not bee lining off center, ducking my head off the centerline, my opponent never sees it coming. I think that's what makes Alex's calf kick so deadly, his opponents really can't see it unless he misses lol. Even if you do make a read, you can't tell if it's going to be a teap, inner thigh/calf, or outer leg kick.
    I've never been ballsy enough to try fighting without guarding my face with my off hand. I think if I was a good as Poatan, I would try. I imagine you'd have to be so incredibly educated on positioning to pull that off. I'm not that guy 🤣

    Met a ONE mma fighter in my country where we had some mma talks. Asked about pereira since he’s my favorite fighter, he told me he wouldnt teach what he does to a beginner since his style and even the way he lead hooks is really risky for a counter. He believes the only reason it works is he’s a 6’4 genetic freak and he has confidence from his combat experience.

    Not totally similar but he shares some similarities in style to Masato from K-1 Max days. Masato also low kicked upwards without turning the hip and didn’t rely much on head movement. Maybe this is just a suitable style for a fighter who’s risk/reward favors them simply landing punches over avoding punches or landing harder legkicks. Staying upright and not turning over the hips seems to allow both hands to be in position to fire at all times.

    I think pereira's open style is a result of training in MMA. Hands down while punching and not pivoting kicks is better for takedown defense. He probably wants to bait his opponents into the kickboxing game while avoiding the ground game at any cost.

      This habit probably bit him back in the recent fight. I don't watch him before MMA, maybe he's so used to overpowering his opponent and winning exchanges? Izzy played possum, covering up but had his eyes on Perreira, and unleashed a mean 1-2 counter while Alex acted like he was hitting bags. Izzy surely have studied him in-depth.

    Trevor wittman did a good explanation of rolling the knuckles in a punch. It's not to bring opponents'heads down. From what I recall he explains that the rolling motion of the knuckles just significantly increases the effective force of a punch.
    To that I will personally add, that the diagonal+downward motion of a backhand punch makes the most of a shift of mass in the body from rear to front foot, from rotation of the torso and from the rear shoulder rocking over the body. It's difficult to describe but you know it when you see or do it.

    About the kick: you change power for speed and lower the telegraphy of kick, the higher you are to kick the harder is to notice the kick coming. He might have maximized this kick, like crocop maximized the same kick in another way, or even Andy hug and his impressive kicks.

    Ive always realised his kicks too even since Glory days, but i guess he does not pivot so that he can be stable and come back with the left hook. He does it time and time again to lure opponents to his left hook after throwing that kick. Ive actually tried it in sparring before, and it works😅

  • @atsayers
    @atsayers ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think, intentionally or not, the sum of these parts work well together. Punches coming from low, no foot pivot, turning over hooks: they all have similar benefits and drawbacks. You're essentially trading really wide, vulnerable openings for unpredictability and power. The gambit is that you are using your length, speed, and power to mitigate their willingness and ability to counter. When you hesitate or try to back out while he stalks, you get torched with kicks on the outside. You have to have tremendous natural gifts to cover for the drawbacks, but Pereira is a goliath of a man with a granite chin so...check.
    Damn, I'm so pumped for this fight! I can't wait. My only prediction is violence.

    i do throw the cross as pereira does especially when im going to circle out to the lead foot with active lead hand guard. this reduces the lead hook counter's potential energy immediately as you're moving with it, also giving you more of a time barrier to respond to the shot and pick it off. I come from boxing and have only recently transistioned to kickboxing/mma so maybe i'll get headkicked for this down the road but hey ho, live and learn.😁

    1- In his kicks he doesnt pivot so he mantains his stance anda balace wich is vital in his game. He trows and defends everything from the sams position.
    2- He does throw that right like some great boxers. Naoya inoue for example can throw it both ways. He usually uses this tecnique to follow with a bodyshot
    3- He doesnt come back with his hands because it makes his punches more powerfull and because almost slways moves his head out of the line so he does not get countered. Watch the knockout vs belagaury ( his traing partner now)

    The fact he doesn’t pivot is why he doesn’t telegraph his kicks at all. One of the reasons why I think he continuously landed the leg kicks on Israel. He most probably would generate more power with more “traditional technique” but it’s a trade off of a little power to have 0 telegraph 🤷🏻‍♂️. Great video as always 🙏
