Arthur Murray Studios started losing big money because few people were interested in learning the waltz, foxtrot etc, so he introduced the one-two-rockback routine. To this day new people believe you need his steps before you can rock 'n' roll. I still teach rock 'n' roll and I tell everyone to forget it. Concentrate on feeling the rhythm just go with the flow. Like we did in the 1950s.

In the early 1950's we teens took some of the moves from Jive Dancing and the Jitterbug and adopted them into the Bebop, which mainly was a bit slower, as Boogie Woogie is 6 X 6 Beat, and OTR&R is 4 X 4 Beat. and we didnt do much throwing or dipping of partners either, but, if you were good enough most dancers would clear a space on the sock hop floor and let me and my gal, now my wife, go at it!! I can still do all the moves at 76, just only once though, for every go round. This dancing routine will keep you young at heart and soul, and fit too!!

My wife weighed only 131 pounds, back in the day, I was 253 and very strong, as a farm boy I could buck 175 pound bales of hay with ease, so my wife was quite easy to do all the moves with, and she was a good dancer in her own right, had the moves and locations down pat. One thing most people do not realize about Swing Dancing is that you have to know exactly where your partner is at all times on the dance floor, and what she is doing. Miss a hand while doing these routines will get you seriously hurt!!

I am 77, 2 more years over you, and I first heard R & R in 1954, at age 13, in the back seat my dad's 1954 Chevrolet, on our way back home in Hinton, Oklahoma, from Chickashas at my grandmother's, when, Dad was scanning the dial on the radio, as I set in the back seat, leaning over the front seat to hear what he would finally come up with, like "The Shadow Knows," or "Amos and Andy," or whatever stupid radio show put out, I yelled 'Stop,' as he briefly paused on a station with a new song I had never heard, but more that that was a new sound that grabbed my very soul. "Dad, please go back to that station," which he politely did, thank God, for my life changed, once again, that night, with that song, "Rock Around the Clock," by non other than Bill Haley and the Comets, whom I had never heard before. Yes they are. You cannot do this kind of dancing without knowing your partners exact moves and when they are employed. My wife and I have danced this way for 45 years, and cannot do hardly any of the moves with another partner!!
The music is great!! the dancing is even greater!!! but, they do not go together, the dancers are doing the Lindy Hop which is a 6 x 6 beat, the music is OTR&R which is a 4 X 4 beat and is a bit too slow for this type of dance. which, is why they appear out of sync with the music at times!!

I was in Weymouth Pavillion back in the early seventies. rock and rolling the night away with a chick, I was gone man given it my all when the dancing stopped the music went quiet and stood next to me was a well-known DJ. he said I have been calling you for ten minutes. you have won tonights best dancer. and presented me with 5 LP`s of classical music. that's the one and only time I won. Lol.
