@@Pjf12 Passchendale was fought by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Newfoundland, Rhodesia, France and Belgium against the German empire, the vast majority of battles, especially major battles like Passchendale, were fought by several armies, not one exclusively. Infact, It's a Long Way to Tipperary would have been popular with the Canadians, since they were part of the British Empire.
Passchendale has to be the worst anyone has ever experienced. Everything Ive read about it is pure nightmare.

Im a civil war reenactor.
Was doing a reenactment battle, in which the Confeds broke out in singing Bonnie Blue Flag in the midst of the fight. It gave me goosebumps. A volley would flare out from the union side, several men would drop, but they kept singing. Gave me goosebumps.

My dad told me a story about reenacting. Apparently, he was part of a line that came out of a cornfield and right into an enemy line with cannons. He said that, even though he knew they were blanks, it was pure terror to see that cloud of smoke roll toward him.

I wouldn't say they were built different. Just desensitized enough, or shitting their pants, depending on whether or not they had combat experience. Very little has changed in that regard since then. I bet that even the bravest ones were scared tho. Fear of death is natural.
nah they were usually crying, shitting, and scrambling for any cover available, especially early war. some units were better at discipline under fire than others,

you should read about describing the rebel cannon shelling that took place on the third day of the battle. like it may have been incinerated but the shells kept coming down one after another like a rain of metal. at the time it was the largest cannon shelling in history.

You’d be surprised. Reynolds was in the thick of it, during the first day, while leading his 1st corps to McPhersons ridge. He was shot through the neck and instantly died. Sickles was also in the thick of it, during the height of the Confederate onslaught on the wheat field, got his leg mangled by a cannon ball. Hancock was present during Pickett’s charge, his men desperately trying to get him safely to the rear. He fought back saying “There are times when a corps commanders life does not count”. He would later be wounded when a bullet bounced off his saddle and into his right thigh. All in all 3 Union corps commanders would become casualties in the Battle of Gettysburg
@@WanderingLibertarian i meant most of the time they wouldnt always be at the forefront of attack. Not everyone is as dumb as say Albert sidney Johnston who was likely killed by his own men around the hornets nest as he rode forward at Shiloh. Things like that didnt happen too often

However i believe the late arrival of Lew Wallaces division at shiloh was pretty much enough to route the Confederates at that point, PGT Beauregards army(cos johnston was dead ofcourse)

I could barely make it through this video, with realizing that I visited the battlefield of Gettysburg last year, and this video made me feel the sensation of the hundreds of thousands of deaths in one video. Too imagine the horror the Union went through and our country as a whole went through is terrifying. Thank you for this grim reminder that we're all Americans, and we're one people. We got only one nation, so let's act like it instead of squabbling over the useless things in life.
Pretty sure Gettysburg didn't result in hundreds of thousands of death. Its not Stalingrad or Verdun lol.
