    I now own this very bike coming from BMW 1200gsa and it is as so much better in every way and as a big plus hasn't gone wrong 7 times in 7months no leaking water pump, clutch that doesn't disengage, failed switch gear, and as you have experienced failed rear damper perhaps I was just lucky!! Great work TMF

    Adventure riders moaning about maintaining a chain. Really is it that big a job. You wanna go travelling and exploring the world but can't handle a bit of chain care. Strikes me you ain't gonna be traversing continents if your worried about that.
    Can you put the new Tuono on the review to do list please?

      Why have the hassle of cleaning and adjusting a chain if you don't have to? It's not about 'can't handle it' just plain common sense.

      The GS shaft drive needs to have its fluid changed at every oil change. Isn't that maintenance?

      You look left and you look right and what do you see? Another GS and another and another...GS 's everywhere. KTM's not so much. Ride on brother.

    I’m a GSA Owner, and I love the look of the KTM. No ugly beak.... which I like a lot. Always hated the bmw beaks. A few faults in this Nice test.... the Ktm has 160 BHP.... and the “r” version is the hard core off-road version, and not the Road version as stated.

    TMF, after all these test rides does its make you want to get a new bike all the time?

  • @warholio
    @warholio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As was explained to me when i test rode one recently - the gear change has two positions - one for normal and for use with dirt bike boots which is higher - sounds like you had it on that setting rather than the "road boot" setting

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

      Yes quite possible, I'm sure it was just an adjustment issue - no real problem...

    Is this the new 2017 model ? The new S and R models have new headlight, instrument panel much improved etc. I would have though the T would have had the same upgrades ?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +vtv8man Yes it is the 2017 T model and no it doesn't have the new lights or instrument panel! Strange isn't it!

    • @vtv8man
      @vtv8man 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm... maybe the old parts bin needed running down. A shame as the new iPad like tft instrument panel looks to be good. Nice bike anyway and love your reviews. Thank you !

      @comadoras 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's weird that they say this is the new model. I am pretty sure it should come with the TFT display and the new headlights. That's quite weird given that the T version is the most expensive in the '17 1290 class.

      Hi The MissendenFlyer, this is not the 2017 T model. It's the 2016 Super Adventure (with no T) bike. I have exactly the same machine. I also had a test ride with an actual 2017 T bike. They are almost identical though - only a few minor details in the exterior design that can tell you which one is which year.

    I bought one! 23,000 miles in 18 months. Great bike! The gas tank holds 8 gallons, that comes in handy for long hauls. Doing an iron butt ride on this bike is easy! The power is addicting! So yes this is a great machine. Sadly on a recent Cross country trek my dashboard died. It's at the dealer being repaired. It will cost me $1,100.00 dollars so that sucks to say the least. Other than that I think this is an awesome machine!

      @@TheMissendenFlyer in light of the failure of the electronics I was actually considering getting a 2018 SA S part of me feels like I can't trust this bike. At the same time I think I may be overreacting to the problem. I think the bikes are basically the same. Only difference is the tires and rims, dash and gas tank size. Any thoughts about this situation you would like to share?

    Nicely done review, as usual... I could well be in the market for something like this at some point, but I reckon my old 950 Adventure still has a few kms left in her yet. I test rode both the big KTM and BMW GS here in Switzerland back in 2005 and the KTM won hands down for the engine, handling, braking, basically everything except overall looks. I really wanted to like the GS, but it was heavy, awkward and dull to ride in comparison, despite looking like a million francs. So I bought the KTM and never regretted it one moment. I have a 748R for when I want to ride an impractical and beautiful motorbike :-)
    Still not convinced about ABS and the plethora of electronics; 'modes' should be in the rider's brain, eyes and wrist not in yet more ECUs and relays which then give up the ghost on a gravel road one Sunday evening in the wilds of Corsica. So for I'll stick with my basic non-FI, non-ABS, passively-suspended old steed for a little while yet. But I know that even an old Luddite like me will have to get with the programme one day, even if it's only when 950 LC8 spares become extinct!

      How much km in the 950 Adventure? Some guy had well over 200 000 and when disassembled the engine it was still rather good. Had done plenty of riding in bad conditions. I think the engine will last well if properly serviced?

    • @herrcastor
      @herrcastor 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a mere 55k kms on the bike in 11 years, and it still runs fine, e.g. hardly any valve adjustment necessary even at 50k. Still only on my second chain, as I ride in a fairly mechanically sympathetic manner and keep it well oiled every 1000km or so. The whole "I must have shaft drive in my adventure bike" is a sales myth peddled by BMW dealers. More GS owning friends have had final drive problems (and indeed catastrophic failures) than chain issues suffered by fellow KTM owners ;-)

    Finally I bought this motorcycle one month ago. It is an amazing machine with a great engine performance. For those who are looking at this motorcycle I can tell you that after a 1500km trip in 2 days the only problem that I found is the seat. I change it for a KTM ergo seat and works fantastic. This is an impressive motorcycle and the electronics made a great job while you are driving fast. Very secure, very fast, I am very very happy.

    I only use Sport mode on mine because I like the "quick action" Throttle calibration. The other settings not only affect power output, they require greater rotation. I've only once used rain when I was riding on icy roads in Germany and it was -7 out east near Poland. Great bike, but I find almost all modern bikes have horrible sounding engines...like bloody sewing machines, nice exhaust notes, but cams whistle

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

      Yes maybe it's time to move to the dark side and go with a 4 cylinder machine!

    Great review! I have one of these that I commute on daily and I love it. I spent a long weekend with a 1200 GS and I much prefer the power and character of the KTM motor. The GS has a comfier seat for long rides and I like that BMW has dedicated buttons for many of the functions (i.e. heated grips) so you don't have to fiddle with the menu while you're riding. Otherwise the KTM is a superior sport tourer for my taste and application.

    • @Veeziful
      @Veeziful 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A couple of points I forgot - I was able to purchase my 1290SA for several thousand $ less than a GSA, but I imagine BMWs hold their value a bit better. Also, the stock headlights are pretty bad compared to the BMW's HIDs. I upgraded with a Cyclops LED kit and now I'm more than happy with the lighting.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you can go far wrong with either - I must admit I do like the convenience of the shaft drive on my GS...but as I said in the video, the bike feels very much like a GS when you're riding it (from a seating position point of view). Thanks for watching and for stopping by - TMF

    This is a great ADV bike . KTM is really giving BMW a run for their money . The cornering lights are awesome at night.
    I would have to paint it ,I just don't like the mostly white plastic. I wish they would have went more with the Super Duke colors.

    222kg is a selling point right there, for a bike of that size! Looking at the big bikes, if you're worried about which to pick and you can't decide based on features, it comes down to price point, and availability of dealer/parts/maintenance support. Where I live, some brands don't really have a shop around.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes good point....

    • @MotorMercMVU
      @MotorMercMVU 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      18kg less than the GSA, it's worth something at least. The Super Adventure weighs about the same as the non-adventure GS. For me at least, the weight difference between the GS and GSA is a factor, so it would be between the GSA and Super Adventure.

    So. What's better? This in the T spec or the newer super adventure S. I saw this model bike and wow!! It's huge and it seems to be only missing a quick shifter and a colour tft screen. Wonder if this spec would be a better buy? Cheers Ross

    Hi mate I ride a new GS. I did try a KTM 1190 in the summertime and felt like I was riding on a sauna especially in traffic how did you find the engine heat from this one. I'm also pretty sure I would have been relieved of my license on a KTM. Very quick in the handling department and from the right wrist. Very exciting bike but don't like the chain or the looks.

    Hi TMF, great video and great review of a bike that I've long admired and would love to ride; it seems to have everything except one thing and I'll come to that in a bit. I first read about this bike a couple of years ago and then got to see it in the flesh at Motorcycle Live 2015. I was researching all Adventure bikes at the time (although my heart was already set on a GS/GSA) and came across the KTM stand. I waited my turn and finally got my turn to sit on it; it was amazingly comfortable, feet and hands found the ideal position and the size of the bike suited my 6' 2" frame. Like you I was thinking, 'should I get one of these instead of a BMW?' I got off the bike and walked around it, admiring its lines; then, to my horror I spotted its flaw - it's chain driven!! I don't want to go touring and have to mess about maintaining the drive system. I met Simon Weir from Ride magazine last year and he had one on a long-term test; I mentioned the chain drive and said I was surprised that KTM hadn't used a shaft drive system. His was reply was he felt KTM don't sell enough of the bikes to warrant the cost of research and development- interesting! What you have reported in your video is everything I've ever read; comfort, handling and the power from that phenomenal engine. It's not just the shaft drive that makes me prefer my GSA; like you I do prefer the looks of the BMW and it does everything I want it to. I rode 280 miles on it last Saturday on all types of roads and got off it at the end of the day with a massive grin on my face. On another note, I am coming down to your part of the country (RAF Halton specifically) towards the end of March, so if you're about and fancy a cuppa, some cake cake and a good chat, it would be great to meet you. However, perfectly understand if you don't do that sort of thing. Cheers, Andy

    Were the KTM loses out over the BMW is the lack of shaft drive, my old BMW F700GS required 100 newtons to the rear axle nut, to adjust the chain, if you are out on a long tour. do you carry a torque wrench or hope to find a local dealer? nice bike though not sure on headlight looks a bit like a balloon.

    TMF, it's unfortunate the KTMs aren't better looking. Their styling works on the smaller bikes but missed on the bigger ones. I do wish BMW could match the KTMS kind of power though. Thank you for the review.

    Hi TMF, hope you don't mind me talking a little 'off piste' - just an observation re video quality. I recently bought a Gopro Hero 4, which I believe is what you now use, to replace my Hero 3. I haven't uploaded any public videos with it as yet, but on a few test video uploads, i'm getting big dollops of pixilation every few seconds (trees in particular are affected), and you seem to be experiencing the same? I have it set to 1080P 50fps, and both the 'raw' footage and edited footage are brilliant. I didn't get it with the Hero 3, and I can't remember seeing this on any of your older uploads (also frustrating that you can only get about half as much recording time on a given SD card/resolution than I could from the Hero 3 - GoPro helpdesk advise that much more data is saved to the card, taking up more space!). Have you noticed any recording quality difference between the two Hero's? Sorry for waffling on, and great review by the way! Regards, Paul.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 60fps by the way - I believe it's an issue with the way You Tube processes the footage, not a GoPro issue. I've not yet worked out the answer, I'm sure it's just down to upload settings needing to be optimal (and clearly mine aren't!)....

    Like others on here, I think this is a 2016 model. I own a 2015 model and it is identical to the bike you are testing. Old style gauges, cruise control on throttle side. If you bought this as a 2017, I would suggest you got "taken" . I am waiting for the 2017 "T" to be released to trade up. If this is a 2017 then I am off to BMW for a 2017. My 2015 trade value should be worth a lot more as it is identical to this so-called 2017. Enjoyed the review!

    Many thanks for another great vid ... have recently purchased a new one of these to replace my BMW K1300GT (on which I covered about 110,000 miles). I fully expected to replace it with a GSA, which is probably the sensible choice, but I just love this too much. Apart from that, I was a bit disappointed that BMW dealers seem to get everything in 'TE' spec. Sorry, 19k for a GS ?..no thanks. I would advise folks to at least try one of these and take advantage of the fact that this is the last year for this model...so KTM likely to offer you a really good deal !. Good luck TMF...keep those vids coming in !

      Depends what is on the market at that point! Will be many years off - now I don't work in the normal sense I don't have the cash for a new bike....If I had the money and was in the market now, I'd probably go new BMW GS/A with TFT and Nav.

    Sadly u didn't get your hands on the new S model, the T is just the old version with the new engine in it. The other one got a new dash, new lights, better controls (cruise control on the left side etc.) aso. Maybe we'll see u on that one as well soon. But i think some of your notes are wrong. Isn't it 160 BHP and 140 Nm of torque?
    Very nice bike i have to admit, a bit pricy but dont get that "GS" image to it, so might be even interesting for me.

      +AussieRider what kind of 1290 the adventure? Hmm sounds a bit like apple and pear (think u now the phrase). I mean I drove the R lovely bike, maybe my next ( in ten years.. ;D) but I wouldn't expect that performance on an adventure bike. For example fuel consumption, shes burning it like a tank and on an touring bike that would be a real problem. So there have to be downsizes and u have two different types of engines.

    Flyer, I, too, tried the KTM before buying the GSA. I found the throttle response to be a bit snatchy. In any event, the dealer had an office worker hand me a 'take it or leave it' offer. I chose the latter.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

    Great reviews but I have to pick up on a couple of points. The cruise control is impossible to reach with your right hand. That's why they've changed it to the left hand side on the new models, and the nice guys at KTM seem to have lent you the only one I know of with a working fuel gauge. KTM's optional GPS mounts are all useless too.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I'm not sure you've "picked me up on a couple of points" as I am always saying cruise control should be on the left grip not the right, all the KTM's I've ridden have had working fuel gauges as far as I can see and I never covered the GPS mount. Thanks for watching anyway - all the best - TMF

    I had this bike for a test too. Lovely bike, but comparing to the LC GS and LC GSA (that I currently own), the BMW's are more comfortable (GSA Windprotection) and are slightly better build with the integrated navigation etc. For me, the reason to buy the KTM would solely be the engine. But then the BMW has shaftdrive and that is a plus for me. The mounting system for the cases, on KTM is invisible (like the GS) instead of the rack system of the GSA. If I wanted this power (who doesn't really?) + chaindrive, I probably go for a Multistrada or S1000xr.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

    I spoke to KTM US yesterday inquiring as to why there is no reference to the "1290 Super Adventure T" and why it is not on the www.ktm.com website, under Motorcycles then "Travel".. The two different KTM staff I spoke with, were very elusive, but ultimately said the "1290 T" is done (i.e., no longer in production), in lieu of the 2018 Super Adventure 1290 S. Has anyone heard the same? The differences between T & S appears to be a different (ipad mini like) instrument cluster, a smaller gas tank, no more spoke wheels, but rather mag wheels, more orange in color, and everything else looks similar.

    Thanks for the video, nice sunny ride! Yes, KTM is kind of bit rough on finish - and if you ride within the speed limits and traffic, not something utterly from other world compared to ones like Your BMW, maybe. Just compare the torque curves (again, sorry...) under 4500 revs... If I were in the search of a travel machine, the 1290 Adventure would be the first one for sure (those orange glasses...), because of the engine that has that special sharp edge - it somehow encourages you to wind up the throttle sometimes... If not always. Answer is so instantaneous! On the other hand you have to be careful with it all time (and when riding nice and slow, people begin to challenge you to race). Well then it's educating...

One other advantage of the boxer you don't want to think about but it protects your feet if you have to lay it down as I did recently when a woman did a crazy Ivan right in front of me. But not the shaft drive perhaps? Also easier for your engine heads to get damaged on the boxer (and other things on the KTM) so it's a bit of a toss-up.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @PaulSlootman
      @PaulSlootman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering about the panniers while watching too. Perhaps you could have shown them at the dealer? I'm always amazed at how much stuff I manage to stow in my GS vario-panniers, even with the smaller right side. Apart from that I prefer the GS looks, the shaft drive, and the protection the cylinders give your legs (I have laid my 1150GS on its side while having to brake hard on a dirty road surface while going 80km/h, and only had a bruise from my pocket knife in my jeans pocket (under an all-weather outfit, I always ride protected)).

      G'Day Mate! "IMO"... The short answer is quality: BMW out-source too many components on price, the new Jap-style switches are shite, the paint falls off... I've actually had a 2006 GS from new but wouldn't swap it for a waterhead. Straight-through Remus system and a K&N and it stays with the sportsbike boys through the twisties. I've had a day out on the new GS but "IMO" it just doesn't have the character of the rattly old oilhead... And you can actually read the numbers on the dials on the latter!
      Had a great ride out with the Ulysses Club on the Gold Coast where our son lives a few years back but couldn't live there... Too hot and the beer tastes like horse piss! HA!

    Great review as always TMF and it's sparked a real shaft v chain debate however a larger issue is KTM (keeps taking money) lack of extending the warranty period in the UK when this bike was launched, why?. Are we Brits so bad at looking after bikes?
    As you gather I am a GS rider having owned Tigers, Multi's, and indeed set off to consider a KTM but sorry, I and many of my colleagues will not hand over 14k to a prejudice company with a track record of chocolate reliability in the past.
    Perhaps that's why there are so many GS on the road, not shaft or chain but you can extend your warranty year after year clearly showing why it's been a belting "old tractor" and some covering 100k miles plus.
    Somebody may correct me now on the warranty but that's what happened when we went for a test ride,,,,,,,,,,,,but bloody hell, what a bike,,,,,,,,,come on KTM get your shit together in the UK!!

I have to confess to selling my LC GSA recently as I'm 95% certain I;'m going to buy the KTM 1090 adventure R...Its not out here in OZ just yet but the basic just is that it's about 35 kilo's lighter than the 1190 adventure r coming in around 195 ( yet to confirmed as local KTM store doesn't even know when thiner getting some ) but with all the fruit, if you can get your hands on one over there and do a review that would be tremendous :-). I always feel the Beema will be more refined but for more outback extreme off road I'd be up for one... thanks again for the informative neutral review

    KTM has a chain. Plus or minus depending what you want it for. For $20k, I'd want a shaft. Ditto lack of hydraulic clutch. The heads are more difficult to get to to service and dealerships that know how to do such things are few and far between, though oddly I have a KTM dealer nearby, but no BMW.
    One thing I noticed besides needing a ladder to board it was that part of the heating element in the rear seat was very prominent above the padding. Feels as though it would be very irritating to sit on.
    I'm sure it's a fine bike, but I wouldn't be too depressed about owning a GS either. Thanks for sharing.

    Loved the look of the new KTMs at Motorcycle Live (Might be in the minority there...) Good to hear they actually ride well too. Great review

    This is just an ugly bike I tried one of these out before I got my '16 GSA. I just couldnt get over how ugly this thing is and the fact that it has a chain. Why get the imitator when you can have the real thing? The engine has lots of power (the GS is no slouch with the torque it has) but when I want to go fast I can get on my S1000XR. Then to top it off, the 2 dealers closest to me are just jerks. In the end, I think I made the right choice with the GSA. I love it!
    Anyway, as always a top notch video! Take care of yourself and keep up the good work!

      Thanks JDMan - I had to have a little giggle with you calling this ugly (and I agree) and then revealing you have an S1000XR!!! Just shows that we're all different in taste and looks is a very much subjective thing....ignoring the looks we have some brilliant bikes to choose from don't we - all those you and I have mentioned are darn fine machines.....spoilt for choice! Thanks for watching - TMF

      The chain was a real sticking point for me - great for power delivery, but not great for really long touring. Especially when you do some off roading during your tour - have to carry all the chain maintenance equipment with you. However, the heated seat is a great option. I have some 4 am starts on long driving days - and its near freezing for a few hours in the morning during the spring and fall months. That heated seat seems really good to me! You can have heated gear, but it takes up space.

      Yes looks are subjective. I actually like the XR. I should clarify. I would like to see KTM offer different colors. If the 1290 came in a red or blue it may have been a different story. I just cant stand that matte white.

    Looks and chain = chose a GS. I can see people being severely torn if they have tried both though!

      Yeah it's a tough one isn't it - on balance I'm a GS man and would take the GSA, but both excellent machines...

      As much as I'd like something other than a GS the shaft driver wins everytime for me.

      Yeah, only difference is BMW has proven it can make motors that can last whereas KTM is in a bad place. With that said, the 1290 has proven to be very good. Time will tell but probably neither will do well when compared to the Japanese abilities to understand and improve everything other people do. Sorry, :)

      Yes, but aesthetics is a big one regarding how you feel about a machine isn't it...

      I always find it incredible how opinions can differ so wildly, I really can't see the 'quality' of the BMW at all - the finish to me looks so flimsy. For me, as with all bikes, it's the engine that makes it what it is and the BMW feels so weak next to the Triumph.
