My Mom would machine baste 2-3 pieces of like colors together along edges of smaller precuts and put them into a lingerie washing bag.
Large fabric cuts either the same with a turned 1/4” seam on cut ends and a 4.0 stitch or turn over like a rolled end and pin with safety pins. She would fold yardage up to 4 times. She would wash all in warm to hot temp in gentle cycle and dry, then press. I remember almost no fringe to snip and never any bleeding or raveling from her quilts.
I do the same thing to my fabric today, especially any fabric bought at thrift or discount stores as quality and dyes are often poor with weaves less than tight despite cost. The discount stores to shred cut edges more than higher quality Cotten even in the lingerie bags. Sometimes I will lay them in flat and safety pin stainless steel safety pins through the net outside edges on the cut sides to keep them from shifting within the bet as they wash/dry and then almost no gray at all.

I’ve just come across this video. I always wash my new fabrics because I’m terrified of bleeding colors, and when it comes to second hand or thrift finds, I want to wash off any dust, dirt, or whatnot that it may have. Sometimes I run a zig zag stitch over the raw edges and just washed and dried by machine. But I’ve also used this method when it comes to washing them and just use my washer to wring out the water. I simply set it to a spin cycle only. Works great, especially if you have a large load of fabric that you need to get washed and dried.

Been doing this for years ... I have even gone further as I put my fabrics into a large pot of boiled water ( very hot ) let it soak then lift the strainer out then spin dry ..... I found this gets the extra dye out.

Thanks for the very useful tip! Just a couple of silly questions. 1. Do you put hand wash detergent in the bowl as I could only see clear water in the video. Not sure it was changed. 2. Most garment cottons I wash at 104F-40C degrees and reserve higher temperatures for bedding and similar. Would warm water be okay, as that would be about 104F-40C degrees Thanks!

She didn’t say anything about shrinkage, sometimes fabrics shrink after washing and your 5 in.² can down to 4 3/4.

@@alisonbunce159 If you have a sewing machine with zig zig, use that or a similar stitch...some of these machines have an overcast stitch which works also. If you have only a straight stitch, just a line of stitching helps - to a degree. When I was quite young, I had no machine. I 'whip stitched' over the top/raw edge by hand. That does help quite a bit. Good luck to you.

eileenfb1948 Hi Eileen if you have a large piece yes put it in the washer. I will put no more than three pieces of the same value on the gentlest setting.Mines has a hand wash YEAH! I actuality bought my machine because of this:)It's the small pieces you have to be very careful of..the smaller the piece the bigger the chance to distorted. That is when you need extra loving care.

I realize this is 5 years old already BUT, it is a timeless topic so I would like to ask, isn't part of the prewash idea drying the material to get it to shrink before sewing? I've heard some say ironing damp fabric is as good as a wash and dry. Is that your position as well?
I'm new to sewing lighter fabrics so I'm trying to get good instruction. Up to now I've only sewn canvas items which won't get washed.
    Thank you!

  • @freyjascats

Well, crap. I'm new to this, and I put mine in the washer, with the smaller ones in mesh laundry bags. I don't use fabric softener or drying sheets, but I do use a color catcher so that the dyes won't bleed, but then I just throw them in the dryer! I have a question though - if we're making a quilt that will eventually be washed in a machine, wouldn't we want any distortion out of the way before we sew?

Thanks, Laura! I have been tossing all my fat quarters right into the washer, then the dryer.. and yes. they shrink! not a lot of fraying on those, but my yardage, yep, quite a lot of fraying! But at least now I know the quilts I make for people won't shrink! (I just started washig EVERYTHING, in April, when I started making scrub caps, surgical gowns and face masks). Now, I wash the fabrics, as soon as I bring them home from the store.

What a great idea. I could also spin the few delicate shirts that I hand wash. There is a sheet you put in your laundry that absorbs excess dies. I cannot remember what it is called but it is by the laundry detergent in the stores. I use those when I am worried about the dye running. Also, I thought the idea was to put the fabric in the dryer to preshrink it?!

Maria del Pilar M. That is a huge debate! I personal like to wash my fabric first. First; I want to see what it looks like washed. Second; get any leftover dry out, and third ;It has chemicals in it that I want out. But It really is a matter of what you want to do! No right or wrong answer on this. The only fabric I do not per wash is fabric that would never be washed!

Newbie here- So is the point to pre bleed the colors? I avoid precuts because I like to pre SHRINK yardage, then use polyester thread and battling to keep it all looking un puckered after washing. I wonder if precuts show shrinkage if straight hot water is used… and would that not matter if every piece in the project were the same manufacturer’s pack ? Are unwashed precuts going into projects with preshrunk fabric going to show after laundering? Also, Am I correct reasoning that batiks are already shrunk in the wax removing process?

I am also a pre-washer and have begun to avoid precuts because I can't prewash them. I can see that this doesn't create any fraying, which is great, but don't the charm squares shrink? My big concern with prewashing the precuts (not fat quarters which will be cut down anyway, but layer cakes, charm squares, etc) is that they'll shrink and not be the correct dimension any more. How hot is your wash/rinse water? I'm also a starcher and have avoided starching precuts because that seems to cause them to shrink too.

I should have read the comments here first but you truly are a genuine genius so I'm glad I used that word too to describe this video. It's tips like this that make a project more fun and less work. I'm working with tiny pieces for miniature quilts for Barbie dolls and this has saved me an absolute ton of work. God Bless You!!!!!

Do you ever use Retayne or Synthrapol?
Retayne is a color fixative to prevent bleeding. Synthrapol is a detergent that helps keep fugitive dyes from re-depositing.

Hi Laura I am loving all of your videos (: I have never quilted before but I am going to try and make some projects to donate to a cancer fund raising event in Sydney Australia. Do I need to zig zag the edges of the small cuts of the fabrics before hand washing them or is it not necessary because they are not going in the machine. Thanks for the inspirations and have a great day!!!

if you are careful you can just leave them. And good luck and have fun:)

mohsan hamza Both machines are a good choice. With out knowing what two machine you are comparing I would probably buy the Brother. My friend has a Brother and loves it. Hope this helps....happy New Machine Day!

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

mohsan hamza They are a lot of good machines out there, I own 7! the best one is one that you feel comfortable with. Go to your local shop and buy there as you will get the best help from them. Test drive a few times before you buy and don't rush! Your machine will become your best friend!
