Wow, this was so helpful!! I (6b S. Pgh) was going from nursery to nursery last year and eventually gave up, having been overwhelmed and confused - and I'm an experienced gardener. After viewing this vid 3x (and all your others) I now feel better educated and confident about making a decision on roses🌹for the first time! Thank you Jason, I'm pretty sure you created a monster here 😅.
Your channel is such an amazing resource for us beginner gardeners, who have just discovered the beauty of roses and don’t know where to start. You’ve given me hope of growing a beautiful balcony garden, thank you!
0:36 ok I am 30 seconds into this video and thank god for you Jason… I swear these roses would have died by now if I hadn’t watched every one of your fantastic instructional videos.
Be careful, once you successfully grow your first rose, you can't stop. I started out with knockout roses, and suddenly I have to have everything from the David Austin catalog, and every Kordes climber. Is there anything more beautiful?
Hey Jason, always a treat to watch your “rose video’s”. So much to learn about roses, and your video’s are always bite size clips, packed with information. Eagerly awaiting more rose related topics. 😊
Hybrid teas are my favourites, mainly as they are great for cutting single stems. I have fantastic memories of my two sisters and I packaging up a single stem with some foil at the bottom which we would hand to our teachers every Monday morning. They would last the week in a bud vase on our teacher's desk! My favourite rose now is the Just Joey hybrid tea.
Jason , I e begun watching your videos because you are so great at taking some of the mystery out of rose cultivation. I began growing Marie Pavié roses in 2018 and must admit that I had no clue about what I was doing. In spite of this, these little roses have survived and bring me much joy when I sit on my porch early in the morning. They have a delicious scent. Thank you Jason for your videos!
What a pleasure to listen and learn from your generous videos. You are a great lover of all your products but it’s quite clear and beautiful you love Roses. Thank you most kindly. Blessings.
Another excellent video. Thank you. I'm really pleased you mentioned David Austin roses from England. I live in a high rise apartment in Manchester UK with an enclosed balcony. It's East facing and much like a conservatory or greenhouse in the sky. I don't have loads of room, 30 feet long by 1 yard wide, so I'm going for two of Austin's roses: Gertrude Gekyll and Gabriel Oak, yes, you guessed, I want beautiful old-style roses, suitable for container growing, with very strong scent. Your videos are extremely helpful for choice and size of roses and containers. Thank you.
I was trying to get bushy green plants to fill up my porch and ended up with roses lol!! and now I see the obsession. I was a bit "surprised" as I thought roses looked like the ones on "The Bachelor"... meaning perfect and kind of angular and not round!! I have a long way to go in learning roses, but Im talking to mine and they are quickly opening. I love it!

Thanks for another great video. I always find something interesting in what you choose to talk about. I love roses and now have 55 or more roses, which include several Hybrid Teas, 6 Grandifloras, 2 Floribundas, 2 Shrubs, 6 Trees, 6 Climbers, one Rambler, and several Miniature roses. Before I moved here, in my collection of 60 or more roses, I had some Old English Roses, and several David Austin Roses, but unfortunately, I don't have any of those now. Of all the roses, I had and loved, I like the Grandifloras the best. I now live in Southern California where the weather is very agreeable for roses, but I do find it is very difficult to find good Grandifloras.
Excellant video and great info on roses. I never did understand the group names. I just remember being told to get Knock Out roses as a beginner--and they're excellent.
I was sitting here wondering what the difference between floribunda, grandiflora, hybrid tea's...and then I found this video...I was in the right place ... and it must have been the right time...lol... sorry. Thank you so much for this info!
Thanks for sharing all that information, I will be listening to this video again for sure. Love roses but have to be careful with my choices. Front yard full sun but me back yard has pockets of sun with mainly shade. Again thanks 👍❤️😊

Just found you and your videos. This video is super helpful to me as I've been trying to figure out all of the rose differences! Will also check out your other vids! Thanks!!!
I can’t get enough of roses..,i saw a few sticks of cut branches in my neighbours front garden,i was in their garden bin on the side of the house like a fox, took out as many cuttings as i could in October (as they have most beautiful colours of roses )...& yeah they’re all doing very well ( in London ) ..,i couldn’t ask for them & i already have about 180... ( what if they came to the bins & saw me doing that? )..ohhh
Eden is lovely, but not entirely immune to foliar diseases. Consistent soil moisture, regular feeding, good sanitation (removal of infected foliage, cleanup between seasons) and pruning for good air circulation can help quite a lot, but some seasons will still be a tie at best.
Climate definitely can affect rose size. My miniature rose growing by our tiny library didn’t get the memo about staying six inches tall. The blooms are small, but the plant is no longer tiny in stature 🙃
Greetings from Greece. One question please. When you plant in pots and sell successful rose cuttings do you sell them the first year or second year and beyond ?
Thanks - it's about a year after cuttings. If I get well rooted cuttings in June, for example, I'll overwinter in large plug or small pot, then transplant around February for sale in May or June.
I’m considering getting a few “At Last” shrubs because I like the color and size... are there other good options for peachy landscape border roses I should consider?
Hi may I ask if miniature roses be planted in.groud for Zone 6? I.am wondering if I.should Lee.them in door for the winter even they look pretty strong in pots for now. Thanks in advance for your reply.
How do you manage Japanese Beetles? I have e few Floribundas and have to pick them off daily. Want to grow more roses but would be harder to deal with beetles.
Thanks for the great video’s I always look forward to them. I noticed you didn’t mention anything about hardy roses? I thought they were also a classification?
Hi Jenn. More a "characteristic" than a classification. Many of the old garden roses (which I mainly skipped in this video for the sake of brevity) are very hardy, but class-wise, they're damask or gallica or alba, etc. The modern hardy roses (like the Morden or Parkland series, or the Buck roses) are usually lumped in with the "shrub" class (along with the Austin roses) - it's a big catch-all!
Unless it's quite a large container, I'd advise against it - the roses could compete with each other for water, food and even light. No, they wouldn't be any more likely to cross pollinate (for seeds of a mixed parentage) than they would if they were planted nearby in separate containers.
Hi Jason, do you have a favorite climber that bees really enjoy? I really don't mind the color or flower type, but I would like to have a "scented rose wall" that blooms all season for bees.
Question. I have scented roses that sometimes put out flowers with scent and sometimes ones with no scent. Why is this? Is there a certain feed I should give them? Thank you
I've had good luck with Julia Child (floribunda). Rugosa roses like Purple Pavement are pretty healthy. You can also check on helpmefind.com for the disease resistance rating
Yes, lots of interbreeding and selection has been done between repeat bloomers and once-blooming roses. It can take a couple of generations of back-crossing and selection to carry the repeat-blooming characteristics over.
Hi Jason, can the type of rose be identified by their? For example the floribunda might have 2 sets of double leaves (or 2 opposite each other) plus one on the tip making 5. A climber could have 3 sets of double leaves plus one on the tip making 7. I have been given many cuttings and they are all mixed up. Can I identify them by their foliage?
You can always try Kerry. I can sometimes tell a pretty distinctive variety by its foliage and growth habit - Robusta had a distinctive coloration to its new growth for instance, but most varieties are difficult to tell apart conclusively
@Fraser Valley Rose Farm Hi Jason, thanks for great explanation. what about industrial grade roses? Are they different from others or their growing conditions are different? From this video they seems to be like Tea Rose
Thank you for the great video. I have a Tahitian sunset rose that I planted a few years ago. It’s in a south facing spot. While the roses next to it are thriving, it remains small and then started having lots of black spots the last couple of years. I am not sure why as it’s supposed to be an award winning healthy rose. Anything I can do or just change the soil and plant a new one? Thanks a lot!
I want to thank you for all your hard work in educating the public. Corona gave me the time to finally tackle my garden and several Tantau roses at the garden center in my desired color got me addicted. Now I feel that I should know what I am doing, with your help.
Can you suggest some roses that are hardier. Almost to zone 3-4. I know about Morden’s Blush, but it’s impossible to get! Are there other choices? We who live in colder climates are desperate to find some!
Thanks. I'll put together a video on the topic sometime soon - but in the meanwhile, also have a look at the website for Corn Hill Nursery in New Brunswick. They wrote the book on hardy roses, and you may find some interesting variety suggestions there.
I live in Fort Nelson BC a zone 2b/3 is there a rose or roses that will grow in my zone? I would protect them over the winter i have some scrubs i grow that i wrap in burlap and i have strawberries i cover with thick straw mulch I would love some roses on my yard ...
Hi Brenda. If you ever get a chance in the summer, visit the St. Albert Botanic park in Edmonton to see their rose varieties. The agriculture Canada bred roses (Parkland, Morden series) Robert Erskin's roses. Species roses. The old European Alba roses are also quite hardy.
Hi Jason, A friend gave me two Schoener’s nutkana last year. She referred to them as ramblers and said that they would like it at my place because they’d have so much room to grow. Currently they are each in a large pot and my intention was to replant each into it’s own 2 foot by four foot bottomless container. Would that be too limiting for this species? Thanks for your help, Lili
Hi Lilli - that's a rose I've read about, but never seen available locally. I think the containers you're considering would be fine, as they can grow down into the garden soil below as needed. 'Paul Neyron' (one of the parent roses) REALLY appreciates consistent moisture (or otherwise mildews badly). Good luck!
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you for replying. Yes, my plan is to give really consistent moisture. So far no evidence of powdery mildew in their current containers. They are getting mostly morning a d early afternoon sun and are very happy. A little worried about where I want to place them as they will get full sun all day. I'm around 600 feet above sea level and in a more interior location of the Puget Sound region. The direct sun here always feels hot to me so wonder if the roses will have too much sun during the dry part of the summer.
Thank you for all the helps and tips!! Please consider doing a video on miniature roses as a walkway border plant. Soon please!! Prepping beds and leaning towards the minis. Your videos have helped me to grow some AMAZING medium rose shrubs and now hopefully some really short and short!!!
I bought a Rugelda Shrub Rose, that this Rose has suckers, on mine a long shut came up the Stem looks different from the others and it has 7 leaves and lots of small thorns on the Stem is this normal for this Rose
I have a feeling the "different" one is from the rootstock - and I'd suggest you remove it as low as you can, even below the soil line. If I'm right, the flowers will not be the same as 'Rugelda'
Okey Jason when cross pollinating a roses do i need to find the father and mother roses. And is there a female and male plant that's to be the father and mother how will I know them? I would like to try to breed out big stunning rose of my own if i ever succeeded or know how to do so. What if i cross breed Neptune with Parole, i want the shape to be like the type of Gemini or Jhumelia haha
Hi! How are you? Just wanted to ask, is it possible to grow hybrid teas as tall as around 4 or 5 feet and make them bushier? I managed to grow them in our hot weather but they look thin. I have a chemical fertilizer 16-16-16, how often should I apply that? Thank you!
Hi Raymund. It's mainly about judicious pruning to encourage some branching near the base. Your fertilizer can be applied more frequently (as directed for rate), but I usually go with a feeding every 2nd month during the growing season.
Yes. I saw natural layering (in my video on training climbing roses, actually) - and yes, the artificial methods work too. I'll make a vid next season.
Thanks for the video ! :) I was reading about the Hybrid Musk Rose. I thought it was a rambler judging by the photos ! These are hard to find when shopping for roses and people don't talk about them much . Do you know why ? :) Seems a better option than a rambler because they all have a strong scent and bloom non-stop till the winter. As one youtuber said - people want Hybrid Musk roses but they don't know it ! :) Can you do a video on them ? :)
I have a Super Excelsa that is a rambler, it is growing well despite all the little bugs she has...I spray her with Piretro regularly and others Bayer products but those afidi are not leaving...the worst part for me is the fact that the flowers are not that numerous and they bloom just one time in June...I think I'll give it away...
All petals are edible (maybe nip off the white bit at the base, as it's a little bitter). As for rose hips, my favorites are from the rosa rugosa varieties.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you so much! We have rose hips gam at the house right now my parents like it and I do too, we all do. I really appreciate it. 🤗🤗

Excellent video Jason. What is the rose at 5:12?
That was the grandiflora 'Queen Elizabeth'
Hi Jason, how long do rose cuttings take to grow before selling? Thanks!
About a year after taking the cuttings
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thank you so much!
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm I think we need to prune the cuttings in the early spring to encourage stronger growth, is that right?
Thank you for all the helps and tips!! Please consider doing a video on miniature roses as a walkway border plant. Soon please!! Prepping beds and leaning towards the minis. Your videos have helped me to grow some AMAZING medium rose shrubs and now hopefully some really short and short!!!
Hi Joanne. I'm starting a collection of minis now, and I'll see if I can do something on the topic
Thanks for the the advice
Okey Jason when cross pollinating a roses do i need to find the father and mother roses. And is there a female and male plant that's to be the father and mother how will I know them? I would like to try to breed out big stunning rose of my own if i ever succeeded or know how to do so. What if i cross breed Neptune with Parole, i want the shape to be like the type of Gemini or Jhumelia haha
Thanks. I'll do something soon on cross pollination
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm thank you sir!
OFF.TOPIC I KNOW...but can roses by propagated by layering or even air layering.?????????
Yes. I saw natural layering (in my video on training climbing roses, actually) - and yes, the artificial methods work too. I'll make a vid next season.
It is not uncommon in England for the rose Queen Elizabeth to be planted as a 6-8’ hedge and it can be absolutely beautiful
Such a strong performer!
Sure. I've featured them in other videos, but a full treatment would be a good idea.
Hi po can I buy your kinds of roses cause I Love IT all ❤️❤️
IM from Palawan Phillippines 🤗
Thanks for such great information 🙏
* Can you make video on Sphagnum moss... If possible🌱
Thanks. I'll add it to my list
Hi, do you know by any chance which are the edible roses? If you can name a few I would appreciate it! Thanks a lot Jason! 🤗
