This dance is not macedonian, maybe music (and/or words) only. Dance steps was adapted from turkish "Yeni Yol" by american coreographer Steve Kotansky at 1990. If you have information about Macedonian origin of this dance, or have information about research on Rumelaj, please comment.

+Fabrizio Conti I agree, and recall Steve Kotansky saying much the same himself at a couple of the dance instructional workshops I've seen him teach this.

I only teach occasionally, as I am not currently in a folk dance group. I used to live in Pittsburgh, where various kinds of folk dancing are strong, and would travel to different dance weekends and week-long workshops.

Jeni Jol (the Macedonian version of the Turkish Yeni Yol) was taught by Pece Atanosovski in 1971. It is done in Macedonia and a quick look across youtube shows several Macedonian versions). However, the Music Rumelaj is *not* Macedonian, it's Roma, and they are singing in Romani. Steve K put the *Macedonian* version of Jeni Jol to this music. The styling on the Turkish dance is different, although the weight changes are similar.

Well i haven't encountered this dance with that name on the field, although i it is known the the Roma people in Macedonia had a lot of dances that were danced like this. I am also aware that it is the same as Yeni Yol, btw i am a professional dancer but i haven't heard of this Steve Kotansky maybe you would like to tell me more since i see there a lot of people throught the world "trying" to teach Balkan dances in some very weird and absurd forms

I would rather remind me of the transition of the traditional Greek circle dance and the dance called Arab Dabke rather than Roma dance.
