In 92, my friend & I, armed with that great old cheap guidebook, as the www was a year away, tried to do our own ghost tour in New Orleans. Turns out the cops dont just let midwestern barely-adult women wander around the Cemetery. We begged, and were vaguely aware that he couldnt stop us legally, but he was so dad-like that we gave up and begrudgingly admitted maybe we should skip it, as we had never seen actual gang nembers IRL & prob werent ready for anything that scary. Ended up getting chased by horrible homophobes who were also vacationing students, I'm pretty sure the cop was right to turn us away, but we learned real fast that rich white boys will be very bold in trying to hurt you, and it's always a scary tour to be out late during tourist season.

So I’m waiting for Karl in Gold Black coffee shop for an hour and he doesn’t show up, and then the server comes over with my third cup of coffee and I’m getting edgy, and then a text comes in from Karl: “Hi buddy. I’m tired of NY City so I’m moving to Billing’s Montana to become a fir tree. All the best in your ‘go nowhere’ career in nothing at all. It’s been fun. Bon voyage!” And I’m thinking, thank god. I can now open my bookshop and do some work instead of lurking in coffee shops dreaming of 1970’s NY and how there was no crime or rats then. So I’m walking down Court St. and a guy stops me and says, “Where’s Black Gold Records bro?” and I say, do people still play vinyl records? And he says, “Yeah…I prefer them for their expense and inconvenience.” (it takes all sorts). So I decide to do my shift restoring the Bronx River and I get there and Dwayne is there shovelling dank black sludge onto the bank and he’s wearing a t-shirt with Gerald Ford’s face on it and a red diagonal line through it and underneath it are the words ‘Drop Dead Gerald Ford!’ Cool. Clever. So I pick up my shovel and Dwayne says, “How’s your friend Karl?” and I say, Karl? Who’s Karl? (Now Dwayne is a massive hash and weed head so he’s prolly out of it, so I say nothing more and I just start shovelling sludge and planning my bookshop. Sweet…)
