For musicians this and all podcasts consoles have one show stopper missing feature. Unlike most audio interfaces they all only support one sample rate at a hardware level. On the Tascam the driver will let you play other sample rates from the PC via USB but it’s doing real time conversion back to 48k before it goes to the Tascam, that’s not OK for DAW or wav editing unless all your projects are also 48k you are not hearing the playback as it exists in the actual files. If you look at the specs of the Focusrite interfaces for example they support 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz.
You do an AMAZING job with your videos. First, you explain things so well. Second, while others just talk and talk with us looking at their face, you use video clips side by side with your face so we get a very clear picture of what you are talking about. I'm researching to decide between the Rodecaster Pro II and the Tascam Mixcast 4. Have you considered doing a video comparing and contrasting the two?
Thank you for this comprehensive walkthrough, I'll be updating the the firmware on two units I'm working with. One is staying and the other is being sold, since I've bought the RCPII. Appreciate your time spent in showing the screens from both FW versions so we could compare and understand better what's new.
One of the questions I have as I stare at the Rode and the Tascam is this: How committed are both companies to continued improvement. This video is encouraging, but it's 10 months old. Is there any indication that Tascam is going to keep on working for more? Or are they likely to quit here while Rode keeps developing? It has gotten to the point where you're not just buying hardware, you're buying software.
Great reviewer! I can tell that you thoroughly know your products/market, and that you are a consumer yourself, which all makes for a fantastic review. I'll be looking through more of your videos as I already trust your opinion after this one!
Thank you very much 🙏 for your very professional video and clear explanations. I appreciate it very much. You asked what could fill the gap between the Zoom P4 and the Podcaster Pro Series 1? Maybe the Zoom Podtrack P8 or rather the TC-Helicon Go XLR? The latter comes more from the gaming sector. I'm still vacillating between the Tascam Mixcast 4 and the RodeCaster Pro II. At the moment I'm using a MixMinus setup, alternating between the Yamaha MG16XU for stationary use and the AG06 for mobile use. I can't tell any difference in sound between the two. Certainly completely uninteresting for my use of video and telephone conferencing. Please keep up the good work and I look forward to your explanations of how to solve what and where. I am always interested, especially in mix minus setups or how to send what where. Stay safe. Servus from Bavaria.
Servus! :) The Zoom P8 was rather a flop: no USB multitrack, no Bluetooth, same amount of built-in mix-minus as the P4. I‘d much rather see a Zoom P5 in the middle (see in my 2022 prediction video, there‘s still some months to go! 😂) Or if the Vocaster 2 gets a software update that allows for the native 2nd USB channel.
I love the Mixcast 4, especially since I got it on a B&H daily deal for $299. I had been pretty set on getting a RCP until then. I’d really like to see some mic presets like the RCP2 for common microphones. It’d also be nice to see a new curve or something for the different presets. Otherwise it’s confusing. Does “deep voice” make your voice deeper? Or do you select that if you have a deep voice? Protip: you don’t need to go into the menu to turn on decibel meters. Just tap the Home Screen in the meter area and it will toggle them on and off. Your videos are great. Subbed 👍
Thanks for the pro tip! :) I thought it only works after you‘ve switched it on, but no, even if the decibel meters are switched off, tapping the home screen turns it on. 👍 Mic presets would be great, especially if you could save your own ones too.
Great overview of the new features for the Mixcast 4 (I have one), thanks for putting it together! I wonder how much more in terms of features and tweaks via firmware updates the Mixcast 4 is capable of, i.e., to put it closer to the RCP2. Also, I think Tascam should cut the device's price to make it even more competitive.
Thank you Barry! Agree with you, although apart from some hardware limitations like the dual USB ports and the related perks at the moment it is surprisingly competitive, even if the RCP2 is clearly more capable (working on a side-by-side comparison right now). The RCP2 has more future potential though, I feel.
I'm not sure if my auto power off worked before the f/w update or not but regardless, my auto shutoff is enabled and is not turning itself off. All sliders are down and I'm sure it can't be thinking it's receiving a signal, unless it's getting "pinged" over the USB port. Please try your auto power-off/shutdown and see if it turns itself off. Thank you man!
These 10 features are not new. 1.30 was released back in July. Did you run into an issue with a previous post of this video??? It's *very* well done, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it. We're actually overdue for an update. Tascam has really not been proactive on marketing this product, which really hurts perception in the industry. It's a close 2nd to RCP2, but few comparatively even know about it or consider it. (The dump of Mixcast 4 listings from Malaysia on eBay didn't help.) Tascam has a long, strong history. I'd like to see the company up its game and stay competitive. ONE HIRE could make a difference! Get someone who knows social to give Tascam a presence. FEATURE WISH LIST: As far as the Mixcast, it should be able to drive USB mic inputs...perhaps even allow a USB hub to allow more than one. Wouldn't it be nice (and kinda funny) if the had drivers for the Rode Go 2 on a Tascam board!? People have complained about the huge padded multi-channel file. I'm not sure why that can't be changed...select the channels you want sent out. The faders absolutely should be able to send midi control to a DAW on the computer.
Hi and thanks for the comment! It‘s a brand new video, I just haven‘t got to update it until recently. V1.30 is from July and some other features are from even earlier updates, but I think that the update procedure might seem intimidating to many users and many have probably waited with the update - this is to conve thise users that it’s more than worth the trouble. I think it‘s a great device, not a match to the RCP2, but as you say, close 2nd. I wonder how strong the chip is and how far it can be pushed further with future updates. Love your wish list, I also think that a modular device could be the future of these things (ie a hub for usb mics with a screen that allows custom routing…) MIDI control should be a no-brainer too.
I understand there's a mix minus with the smart phone and Bluetooth channels. How do you deal with echo on the "far end "when incorporating a zoom call via USB? Thank you in advance for your help and time.
Hi, how are you? I was wondering if you are able to create seperate tracks for each mic on adobe audition or would you still need to work with the tascam podcast editor? I thought I heard that this was possible after a firmware update but can find the video again. I am thinking about getting it since I am producing 4 podcasts here in my country and started to need a bigger interface since I only have a two xlr input.
so i recently did an update to the firmware and the interface has 9 pages 0-8 but the software on my pc has 1-8 i want to edit page 0 theres no way for me to edit or delete them
Do the line out or monitor outs allow for mix minus on this unit? I would need to use that as a mix minus because my cohost would be brought in remotely on the line in channel. Can't use the USB, as my main computer will be plugged in there (to play clips and record). Any EQ for the line in? Thanks very much!
Hej, I'm in a quite "special" work from home situation, where i use different computers on the same desk for different usecases. Do you happen to know a console which allows me to have 2-4 Audio Sources (PC, Notebook, iPad, etc), Mic, Cable-Headphone and Bluetooth Headphone connected, with the ability to direct the mic signal to one or the other Computer? Looks like the Rodecaster Pro II or Duo and this Tascam Mixcast are able to do that. But it feels overkill. Would love to control audio levels of different sources and where (cable or blueooth headphone, maybe speakers) those are played, and where the Mic should end up. Thanks in advance.
You think this would be good for video game streaming? I play Fortnite & Destiny 2 with friends so I wanna stream be able to chat with them and maybe have some music playing too. Also does this have any routing? Amazing video!
Hi, it only has mix-minus in terms of routing, so you can set up chats with friends over the USB connection or a smartphone or over a bluetooth-connected device, like a tablet. However, it may be not ideal for you as it does not have any other custom routing (like if you want to exclude game sound from the chat) or submixes (if you want to have the game sound lower for the chat than for yourself) for now. The Rodecaster Pro II has custom routing, but it also does not have submixes yet. If you want to do all this, you can grab an Elgato Wave XLR interface (amzn.to/3UcHLYg): its Wavelink software would allow you to create a separate mix for your headphones vs the stream that your friends are hearing. The GO XLR mini (amzn.to/3sWBMdV) is even more flexible when it comes to routing. Also a Presonus Revelator interface (amzn.to/3UnwZhs or amzn.to/3FOaT3s) can serve you well, as they have 3 separate mixes over USB (Main Mix A, Mix B, Mix C) that you can mix to your liking. (links are affiliate links, if you use them, it is a great way to support the channel - if you don't want to, just search for the product names above)
@@amarxfn I think RødeX is pretty awesome, but it‘s only available for Windows for now. But if this is no limitation for you, it can do everything you have mentioned, as long as you want to do it from a single computer. Also, you‘d have to buy one of the new RødeX mics for it to come free, otherwise it would cost you a 5$/month subscription (which is fair, btw).

Hi! Do you think the TASCAM is the best unit to record 4 people podcasts? I never record alone and sometimes we are even five, but that can be solved without resorting to the P8, I think.
Tough question as the answer usually is “it depends”. The Rodecaster Pro II is from a feature-set point of view better, but there are certain areas (ie price, but also others) where the Tascam Mixcast 4 has the edge. I have a comparison video about them, have a look!

@@PodcastMeister Yeah, I watched that and others and I'm heavily leaning towards the Mixcast. Thanks!

The Mix-Minus needs to be switched on under Menu > Hardware Settings > Audio > Mix Minus. If you have it set to „On“, then this problem should not occur, that sounds to me as a hardware malfunction.
