      The problem with giving jagex power is very apparent, jagex has not just 1 time but many time destroyed their own game with updates, do not fool urself into thinking osrs will not end up like rs3 but with way less content released, the end of osrs will go exactly as follows, (all of these will happen when no new players have joind in a long ..... already down to less then 1% players are first year players according to jagexs on poll so that's ticked, mainly these will happen when player count falls and new players stop showing up, both are happening rn) first micro transactions will be added, just like in rs3 people will complain and leave but it wont matter because at the point they add these the games already got no hope of coming back, 2nd after micro trans the will stop most big content updates and only tweak old bosses or do as little as possible to get by with content updates alot like theyve done the past year, they have 2 options after micros come out either dump that money into updates and advertising bringing the game back to life.... which wont happen they never advertise and wont feel comfortable making new updates after putting in micros with dying player base, or 2 they'll pump and dump osrs milk it for every single penny they can with no real content added knowing all the og and die hard players will either stay till closing day spending money or will switch back to rs3, and at the very end of osrs life they know alot of players will go back to rs3 if osrs servers close down, which boosts sales even more, this is a dreary look at the death of osrs but I feel it is exactly what's gonna happen in the end. I dont want that to happen i hope they add raids 3 quickly and add godwars 2 and alot more bosses(right now in game the number of bosses u can do with a buddy is literally only like 20% i think the numbers close to 8 or 10 not including wildy bosses because f those are outdated and horrible

      @@sbef Nah polls should be in the game, but they shouldn't have the authority they do now. I think it would be okay if the poll booth lost some of it's power in exchange for the devs being more transparent, more actively looking for feedback and criticism and more swiftly implementing change and rebalance whenever and wherever it's demanded and/or needed.

    @mitchellsulz-martin1197 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    When I played as a kid back in 07 and 08 the one aspect of Runescape I adored the most was the lore. It was something that connected everything in Gielinor and made the game feel "complete" and immersive. It even brought us some incredibly entertaining and creative skits based vaguely around the lore itself, like TehNoobShow. Over the last few years it really feels like the developers have completely given up on the lore unless it has something to do with expanding on a pre-existing quest line. J1mmy makes a great point about the Twisted Bow and a lot of the end game content that has been released over the last few years. I hope that with Raids 3 there is some attempt at reviving Gielinor's lore, better yet expand and introduce new concepts into the lore.
    Also I know that very people people who play OSRS today play it for the lore and I don't blame them, it's not like there's much to discover anymore.

    • @dragon666777
      @dragon666777 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly the hardest part about expanding the existing lore is that a *lot* of what was available in the 2007 backup was already setting up for While Guthix Sleeps/Ritual of the Mahjarrat tier quests and storylines, and the devs have been very vocal (for very understandable reasons, as much as I love the resolutions to most of the existing questlines in RS3) about trying to avoid just copying the other game and wanting to make their own distinct content. Obviously that's fine, and they should want to just do their own thing, but I feel like they've run into a wall where they either have no idea how to progress a storyline in a different way, or like what I mentioned with the Guthix and other god quest storylines (example: The Chosen Commander and Land of the Goblins, the latter of which took forever for them to port into Old School despite it being in development at the time of the backup and mostly complete), there's really nowhere else they *can* go which leads to them just leaving them abandoned and unfinished. Devious Minds in particular is also just sitting there on its own without any resolution or followup because of it directly addressing Zaros, once again leading back into the whole issue of the gods, and it's one of the most blatant examples of this issue where the devs don't seem to have a clear idea yet of where they want the game's story to go based on what they were left to work with.
      Things like Zeah, Prif, and other new areas are cool, but they're coming at the expense of leaving entire questlines potentially forever unfinished that really shouldn't be, things like Fairy Tale Part 3, Elemental Workshop, Slug Menace, the dwarf questline, things that would not get in the way of the established lore of Old School that *could* be done relatively easily, but they've been dancing around it for around 10 years now, even as the development team has gotten a lot larger. It's nice that they've at least concluded the Elf storyline and have been moving to do the same for the Vampyre/Myreque quests, so I'm hoping they continue to do that in the future, along with expanding some smaller questlines at the same time, just to give some closure to these things that have been in the game for a decade now.

  • @TylerMcVeigh1
    @TylerMcVeigh1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +391

    Nostalgia is honestly ruining OSRS. We should be looking at the game as a revisionists version of RS, not a 2007 back up. Maybe then we would see more then one major update a year.

    • @SwagScop3d

      For real. All we really hated was the graphic rework and combat rework. Not so much the content updates. Just IMO

    • @FlurryMainchin
      @FlurryMainchin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yes, exactly! I don't even mind the graphics as much, it's the goddamn microtransactions and the dumbass EOC. We time traveled to before that shit but that doesn't mean the game can't progress, it HAS to progress, just in partnership WITH the players now so we can avoid the extreme mistakes of rs3!
      I honestly do believe that the majority of updates that didn't pass the polls would have hurt the game. But some things, like the bp nerf, had to happen even if they probably wouldn't pass. I think we're in an OK place with that system, jagex does surveys on something like the bp to determine a controversial course of action and takes it, after months of revising proposals based on player feedback, and with the purpose of being able to release new content and expand the game. I think that one was a win. As long as they don't exercise that kind of authority too often, I think we're in a position to keep the game alive and well for a long time yet.
      but the mentality of nostalgia-scape is annoying af, I swear the people who are like "muh nastalgia" are the exact same people who say that the game is a prison they are involuntarily grinding due to addiction. THE GAME CAN BE FUN. LET IT. LOL.

      I dont understand this comment, you're acting like the only thing jagex puts into the game is raids and high level content. ToB was released 3 years ago, raids 3 will probably come out next year. In that time we've had: Konar (mid level slayer), the Kebos lowlands (which is content for all levels from mid to very high 95 slayer), the farming guild (new seeds for varying levels, a low level boss), the forthos dungeon (almost exclusively low-mid level content including one of the most mechanically different low level bosses), SOTE (a mid-high level quest), Zalcano and the gauntlet (mid-high tier skilling boss and... the gauntlet), the nightmare (the first truly high tier content on this list), leagues got introduced which I'd count as content, porcine of interest introduced a low level slayer master and slayer creatures, isle of souls, shooting stars, and finally, hard modes of raids and nightmare, the top of the top when it comes to content difficulty.

    The thing about asking for new content is that efficiencyscape have deemed anything that isn’t the best xp worthless. Even you dismissed the f2p quest as just a “wieldable hammer” but there were some content added, you just deemed it irrelevant. Soul isle is also another piece of content that had enough content to generate a few snowflake ironman series, yet it’s frequently forgotten because it’s pretty much a mid level alternative training area.
    So many people complain about lack of content, then when they come they immediately dismiss it because it isn’t top xp/hr and never bother to give it a shot again.
    The devs have been torn between nolstalgia boomers demanding no new activity/gear beat preexisting ones and content hungry people that demand new content while ignoring anything that isn’t the new best.

It isnt remotely useful for anything else. its beautiful ill admit that. but theres a diffrence between effieceny scape and having some convenience, i do agree the wieldable hammer is lit. but seriously. kourend has lizardmen for slayer. blood and soul. winterdaddy. alot of farming content. blast mining. etc. it has unique features and content not found anywhere else. it is something i go to nearly daily for farm runs or tithe farm. the farming guild the woodcutting guild are there. theres alot of good quality content there that isnt just about effecency scape but giving you a reason to actually go. give me a reason to go to the isle of souls for any content. it takes awhile to get around anywhere good as well. Through ferox enclave only is a weird thing as well. i find its not totally worth it. i like the artstyle. but i find it kinda barren. We need new content. even smaller things. give us a reason to go. a new tree or a collection of trees that are useful for woodcutting. fishing. etc. something to make it worthwhile to go to

    I agree with 15:05 . NO ONE plays this game for nostalgia anymore. The way the game was back in real 2007 (the backup) is NO WHERE near the same as it is now. If you were to drop a player who only played in real 2007 into osrs today, they wouldn't recognize it as the game they grew up with. Using nostalgia as a reason to prevent new content (and skills) is just dumb.
    Sadly your other point around 11:00 is also true. The focus on temp game modes is what Jagex is doing instead of the main game. But the sad truth is that most people in 2021 don't want to invest 5 months before you can actually start playing the game (thats even a generous estimate). When leagues came for 2 months, I was able to get my account to TOB status within 2 weeks. I was able to play end game content and have FUN with stuff I never got to try because the real version is way too long to grind out when there are other games out there to draw your attention. I wouldn't put it pass them that new players who never touched this game before, only stay for a few days and never touch it again because the "grind" isn't appealing when you can be using your time for other games. The industry isn't 2001 anymore.
    The thing is the OSRS team is walking this very razor thin fine line on how to make it more interesting without making the skills/game super easy. If they make skills easier and fun, people cry saying its becoming like rs3 easyscape, but if they don't add new things people cry that there is no new content to the game. Must be very hard for the team to make new things to keep the game fresh when the fear of "easyscape" or devaluing a skill(s). The community always is giving mix messages to Jagex.

    I'm just curious about how long any new content additions will feel as though they provide something "new to do". It feels like every time there are additions to the game there are people who decry them as "dead content" within a week. Another issue is that as new expansions are introduced to the game it feels as though it dilutes the gameplay, particularly with the player base largely focusing on playing for efficiency instead of playing for entertainment. That may not be everyone, but the loudest segment of players seem to be those who always want things that contribute to power creep and make older content pointless by replacing it with a new streamlined way to replicate the effects and benefits of that content. It may be that the core gameplay elements and the development philosophy behind OSRS have essentially been pushed to their furthest reaches without a significant overhaul.

      MMO problems

    • @humanmalwarers7197
      @humanmalwarers7197 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Content that's added which doesn't increase the efficiency at which you gain levels or gold is - by default - dead content. The players aren't dumb kids who don't know how to play the game and the internet isn't a cesspool of misinformation leading people to the wrong goals. You want to level up fishing? You google fastest fishing methods and go to barbarian fishing for 100 hours. You want to level runecrafting? You google fastest runecrafting exp then go do ZMI for 50 hours until you can do bloodrunes for 200 hours.
      Same thing for bosses. Unless the boss has some really good unique drop you would want or prints out consumables, don't waste your time going.
      It's why all MMOs at some point or another just increase level caps. This isn't a problem unique to OSRS. Every MMO has its fair share of dead on arrival content or content that becomes irrelevant after updates.
      Addressing what you said about players playing for efficiency instead of for entertainment - the problem stems from OSRS at its core. Just like I said above, about fishing and runecrafting. Look at most the skills in the game? What do they entail? Doing the exact same monotonous task over and over and over for dozens to hundreds of hours. Most of the time for little to no reward. It's generally unenjoyable. It's like going to work except instead of getting a paycheck at the end of 2 weeks you get some fireworks, a musical jingle, and your woodcutting goes up from 95 to 96. OSRS game design at its core does not hold up well when compared to modern games. Or anything really. It needs to shift away from being a monotonous time sink. Skilling needs to be profitable, skilling needs to be dynamic and enjoyable, combat needs to become more dynamic and enjoyable.
      Just look at most combat bosses - shit drops, annoying mechanics, hard to get to, waste of time. I'll just keep going to moneysnake (nvm it got ruined by bots) oh but there's money dragon. Raids are a really good way to make content both enjoyable and profitable.

      At a certain point I realized that Jagex does a great job, the playerbase just has a poor mentality about the game. If the tens of thousands of hours of content out already is too little for you, you might have a gaming addiction.

    Hey Jimmy.
    I was in a similar situation as you with my gaming channel. My entire brand was centered around one game, and all of my viewers expected a particular type of content. My discontent began to show in my videos. I began criticizing the developers/company that brought me 3,000 hours of (mostly) fun.
    I couldn't help but read all of the comments on each video. For the most part it was a bad habit, but then one day I got a particularly insightful comment. I can only paraphrase loosely from memory, but it went something like this:
    XXX,
    I can tell you're getting burnt out on the game.. I think it's effecting your outlook. Your perspective on things in life is a choice; you can choose to see things negatively or positively. I like your content and what you do, but I think you would benefit from taking a break for awhile.
    It was something I needed to hear at the time. Even if the devs/publisher were selling out, it was my choice to sink countless hours into a dying game or to continue to promote a company with bad practices. When you've built up a brand by yourself and you have thousands of people who expect regular uploads, it can become overwhelming. I felt almost shackled to a game that I was slowly growing apart from.
    Within a week of that comment I essentially quit the game and greatly reduced uploads, and today I'm very thankful for it. I recently looked back at some other TH-camrs who had similar content/sub count, and to this day, 3 years later they're still playing the same dying game with a slowly dwindling viewer base. I can see in their streams that they dread it, but they don't know how to quit. Important to note here is that OSRS is not a dying brand (amazingly) so YMMV. If I were you and I wanted to quit OSRS w/o losing my channel, I'd probably commit to a switch (variety streamer or a new main game) and just tank the -80% viewership loss. That's the cost of your sanity.
    What I'm trying to say, Jimmy, is that I hope you take the time to think about what's in your best interest. Your viewers don't see the toll. They don't feel the pressure. It's up to you and you alone to make sure you're happy on the path you're on. I'd hate to miss out on your content, but I'd feel worse if you felt compelled to make it.

      Sure but that also highlights its biggest flaws. You need to have done quests to get better stuff to play better a la WOW. This fragments the player base because not everyone has time or motivation to play raids or grind skills. You remember how (back in the days) there used to be/is a population of girl players that only played/ plays runescape because of the farming skill? Well RS3 basically said: Sure you can have a magic watering can, but let's make the really good boost require level 110 combat. This is the problem with playing runescape 3, there is plenty of good content but it requires so much skilling without variety. Not everyone wants do the same thing in an MMO.
      Im not critising the devs for going after the players who give the company money by giving high tier players more stuff to do but sometimes things get pretty boring for low level players since they dont actually put so much effort into making the low level content interesting. Sorry if this somehow sounds wrong i tried to convey my thoughts and it is quite hard.

      End game is particularly grindy but I think that's only bad with how many people approach the game.
      Requiring tons of time and effort to max is good because it provides a high ceiling. But the issue is most players try to rush it and only do the most meta strats they read on the wiki or see in a video instead of just logging in and doing what they feel like doing with the levels coming as they go.
      There's so much dead content nobody knows about because people only want efficiency. I've found many "inefficient" methods are actually great because they kill two birds with one stone.
      The game gets old quick if you just mindlessly grind towards an arbitrary goal. It's actually enjoyable if you just play for fun (what a weird thing to say) and do a variety of different things without caring about efficiency.

    For the last few years, I've been playing OSRS really intermittently - pretty much only when there's a Twitch Prime 1 or 2-week membership running. When I get into it, I play really intensely, but I can't keep that up long term and get sick of it. So in my short sprints, I try to tick off some new major upgrade, like finally getting a fire cape or leveling some skill. But then I just leave for a while so I don't get that burnout and it'll be fun again next time.

    Not gonna lie seeing some of those fan made map concepts makes me wonder if they could pull out the "mount" update that was meant to come out with Kourend, but this time on an actual huge scale, maybe throw a curveball like, make it so you can only go there with an empty inventory and no gear, and the progression is all across the map, so you have to travel with a mount gathering stuff, maybe add a couple of late game best in slot methods (so after you actually gear up, you have a reason to go to the new place instead of the main continent), but then as soon as you exit, what you bring out can't be brought in anymore, you have to re-enter empty handed. Great video Jim. Heres my take that nobody asked for - I think a new skill is the only real way to retain players in the long run because it's content that is accessible to everyone. Their approach to releasing updates for targeted communities clearly isn't working. Warding didn't pass a poll because it was a boring as fuck skill concept. Skills are the glue that ties everyone together and make RuneScape the unique MMO that it is. IMO a new skill needs 3 things: 1) Solve a real problem (or many) 2) Integrate seamlessly into the game and enhance existing content and skills, and 3) Have some damn sex appeal and FUN involved so people actually vote yes.
    I have a nearly complete skill design that has been in the works for over 2 years with the help of the community legend GentleTractor and others who have contributed to the design. I just haven't released it yet because I've been burnt af lately like everyone else and I've been waiting for the right moment to publish it if the community seems open to it. Maybe if there's enough support for contemplating a community designed skill, I might get my ass in gear to polish the design and release it for community roasting 👌

I guss what I'm trying to say here is that although someones journey may start out nostalgic, the nostalgia dies very quickly and you're left with an old game but an absolute fuck tonne of new experiences which for me personally has made it so much more enjoyable as it's rekindled that flame of walking in to the unknown and enjoying everything for the first time, just how I felt back in 2005 when I played the game for the first time

    The biggest complaint about new gear and shit is "But that'll make X dead content!"
    "Yes... X is lower level stuff, of course it's going to be dead content now"
    If OSRS wants to survive for years to come, we need more updates. Old content will become easier (Not that old content isn't already stupid easy at this point *Cough GWD Cough*) and some stuff will become dead content. That's how games progress. New items come out and take the place of old items. But the old items will still have uses, just not to us sweaty end-game nerds. They'll become cheaper for new players to use and help the game grow!
    Also, the whole "Gotta poll every little game update" mindset needs to go away. The polls are such a flawed system that stops a lot of new content from coming into the game.
    I'm in the group that has hit major burnout due to a combination of playing too much during lockdowns and the lack of meaningful updates. Leagues 3 has my attention just for the spurt of insane xp gains and dopamine drops, but I'll probably just burn out after it anyways.
    These new gamemodes (Deadman Reborn, Leagues 3, and Group ironman) will only tie us over for so long and raids 3 is just a small step in the right direction. The fate of OSRS isn't in this year's updates, it is what is to come after them.

    I still think the polling system essentially handcuffs the devs and hinders content development way too much. It needs to be looked at and adjusted in one way or another. While it may not be the sole reason, it's definitely a big one.

    man as an RS3 player I feel bad for you guys. the polling system has really fucked your opportunity to get new content. we've got plenty of problems with the content that's coming out but at least we're getting content. the idea that the player base knows best when it comes to game development is a highly unproductive one, and the fear of losing old players instead of attracting new ones further compounds the problem. it's not the same game as it was in '07 and that's cool! just make a fun game people want to play. if something gets released that people don't like, change it. or don't. not every piece of content has to be catered to every individual player.

    Isn't the whole point of osrs to actually be old school? If you're burnt out of playing it, or there's nothing left to do, quit and play something else.
    Old school was made for nostalgic reasons, not to make an entirely new game out of it.

    As much as I love old-school RuneScape, I do find it incredibly difficult to play consistently. I login for roughly 2 hours every month or so only to do the same old shit. The most joy I've ever gotten out of this game was when I started my ultimate iron man account. But the progression system is absolutely bonkers. The fact that I have to dedicate like 100 hours of my time walking back and forth in port phasmatys to obtain a high enough crafting level to make black dhide body that you could just go and buy on the grand exchange for a few thousand gp is just disappointing. I love that I have to grind to obtain certain gear. That's not the problem. The problem is that the gear is mediocre at best and is locked behind high level stats meanwhile I could go and do slayer for passive combat experience and obtain rune gear left and right when you need level 90 smithing to make it is ridiculous. Nobody in their right mind is going to get 99 smithing to make a rune platebody when they can just buy it for like 65k or someshit in edgeville after completing dragon slayer and that's if they even bother to do that because they could just spend 3-5 hours doing barbarian assault and have a much better chest piece. The fighter torso isn't the problem in that department though. The problem is that so much low and miss tier comment is locked behind high stats when mid to high tier comment is locked behind relatively easy content. The fact of the matter is that most skills seem superfluous to train because the only real benefit to having 90+ in most skills is unlocking diary content when done of that comment is just blatantly overpowered and aimed to benefit gold farmers without any real contribution to the game. Zeah was the coolest part of old-school RuneScape for me because it was and entire continent in RuneScape separate from the mainland that offered so much content for me to do. I could experience certain skills in a completely different way. That's what this game needs. Reasonable upgrades to gear and skilling content that don't make higher tier content redundant. New ways to train existing skills. Perhaps new skills. New quests. New areas to do the same content we've been doing for years but provide different ways of going about it. Anyone remember the gnome minigame that trains agility that nobody uses because the experience rates are absolutely abysmal? Remember the gnome delivery service? It's content like that that the people should be asking for in this game. It's different. You're not obligated to do it and that's the beauty of runescape. It's there for you if you want to. But there's no reason to do stuff like that nowadays because we can just buy grapes in lumbridge castle basement for some of the best experience rates you can get in cooking or go and kill barrows brothers for nearly 2m/hr with 43 prayer and like 13 magic. Some of the best content in this game is slept on because there is no incentive for the player to do it. Ironman mode aimed to change that but they've added so many drops to slayer monsters that take away the need to even bother doing that content. Why would you go to the woodcutting guild and turn logs into planks or anything like that to work on construction when you can just go do the fishing boss for noted planks? This game needs a lot of work. I love this game and hope to never see it die but at this point it's already dead and we're just yet pretending it's still alive.

      I think OSRS is fine how it is. No new skills, leave content untouched and if they add more things then it takes the nostalgia away and then it will become like RS3 which nobody plays. We don’t want that to happen to OSRS. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

    Incredible video. The fact that people are keeping content from seeing the light of day is infuriating. Warding would have been great, Sailing would have been great, any new map areas would have been great. It's also just really nice seeing someone who Jagex utilizes for content to speak out over the state of the game. A ton of skilling and "efficiency scape" has been wildly improved since 2007 and to say that it's anything like it was is like spooning your eyeballs out. This game CAN be incredible. Jagex should change polls to a feedback hub for small changes and reworks and address broader content away from polls.
    Nuff said.
