OMG I love this so much! My high-school band successfully undertook Symphony in B-Flat only because we had a visionary director. Hindemith was as much an engineer as an artist. I know of no composer who brought as much intellect into the artistry. I can't keep up with the math, but the emotion is as intense as it gets.

On relistening to the EWE, I like this performance better than the Gerry Swartz, mistakes and all. In short, it just has more pizzaz.
Secondly, even though a “modern” comp. It has super historical roots. The short motives and combinatorial combinations of Beethoven and the juxtaposition of whole band sections, a la Liszt, Berlioz and Bruckner, especially the fugal last movement, bring all the thematic elements together simultaneously a la Bruckner ( who got the idea from Beethoven 9 ) just a masterpiece!

A first rate 20th composition. Too bad it’s mostly played by specialist ensembles, I e band or wind ensembles and not scheduled on symphony concerts. I get it that it would be an expensive project, hiring all those extra wind players etc, but for instance, how cool it would be to put together an all star wind ensemble from major symphonies.😊
