Can’t thank you enough for the work you’ve put into that, there’s a book’s worth of info and study for anyone to grab. I’m having loads of fun with this stuff and what you’ve already covered.

WOW, just for a change on youtube we have someone who is actually able to communicate in music AND English with no silly face editing-in or pseudo-Hollywood stuff just because one can! What an inspiration you are. Well done sir for a precise, professional, concise lesson in both word and performance. This video, for us non teenage people; I have to admit though my girlfriend accuses me of being exactly that sometimes! I'm nearly 72...she is MUCH younger...in age anyway...where was I? Oh yes, talking about YOU... THIS is how to do it. You have something I rarely extend to a TH-cam presence...total respect. Thank You for all of your efforts and expertise.

Or to make it even easier, over the Db7 chord, think Db Lydian Dom which are the same notes as G alt and Ab Melo minor. It's like thinking Db Mixo with a sharp 4. This way you can interchange Db Mixo and and Db Lydian Dom so that the entire time your thinking Dom over the Db7 chord. There's only one note difference between Db Mixo and Db Lydian Dom. Just another way of looking at it. IMHO

This is great, thanks so much for taking the time to make this! We just started playing this tune in my band and I was struggling a bit with soloing over it. So many great ideas in here, feeling super inspired after watching this!

Very useful, thank you. A great example of a simple but completely non-diatonic chord progression - perfect for practicing switching scales mid-solo. I read somewhere that non-resolving dominant chords such the Db7 in this progression (which does not resolve up a 4th or down a 5th) imply the Lydian dominant scale (in this case, same as G altered/A melodic minor), and therefore also imply use of the #11 rather than the natural 4th. I wonder if this is why the Real Book authors decided to write it as Db7#11. I agree though that Db7 sounds better and provides useful ambiguity for multiple scale options.

Flippin' marvellous, thanks John. Here you offer so many snippets of guitar wisdom to satisfy all players at any level. I sense we share a similar broad taste in music and influences, across rock, jazz, fusion etc. Would love to see a rundown of what guitars you currently own.

Those melodic minor “modified pentatonic” hacks are super helpful. Thank you.

i mean this is just the best guitar channel. no pointless shredding, excellent information and beautiful playing. thanks mate.
i got a quick HX stomp question, in australia you literally cannot buy HX stomps anymore, they're out of stock everywhere and have been for months. do you think they're about to release a sequel?

I really like that wondering mysterious movement to the harmony, something that's difficult to achieve if you just feel your way through it I imagine. Which is what I'd try and do! (I'm too lazy to think about what I'm doing when improvising) It's not half as effective though, but luckily only I'm listening to it!

On the Db7 chord in the melody, normally you have to play the note B. Besides Pat Metheny plays the note B on Db7. (seventh of Db)

For the Db7, I'm finding that Db Lydian Dominant works - does that sound right? Forgive my lack of music theory knowledge.

What kind of Fx is this?
    Harmonics?
It sounds very good building an harmony under your solo (like an organ).

It is weird there is a C on the Db7, that's its major 7th. Also, an Eb in the melody on the D-7 doesn't fit into either Eaolian or Dorian.
