    Video Summary:
    So much of our human life is passed at a subconscious level, a level below our awareness. Very little of our activity, especially in our mind, "registers" in the course of our day.
    "Mindfulness" is being in the moment while you observe yourself. Its power is in focusing your attention on what's presently taking place within your own body, without judging it. It is incredibly difficult to maintain mindfulness for anything more than a few seconds, without substantial practice. The best way to practice is to start to be mindful of just a few mundane things that happen in your day: when you pass a certain landmark, or every time you perform a common task.
    Despite our best intentions, the difficulty in being able to consistently practice mindfulness is a reminder that humans are as much or more animal as they are rational. Many of our actions, and the thoughts we have while performing them, are automatic. Without teasing out the existence -- and then the origin -- of those thoughts, we'll never truly master our emotions and become self-aware. Gaining that control holds the key to true personal development.
    Practicing mindful meditation substantially improves awareness and has been used in western psychology to alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression.

    I am new to the idea of mindfulness after 60 years of not taking responsibility for my own happiness. I find your videos very accessible and useful - thanks to you.
    One thing I have found very useful in maintaining a mindful attitude is to complete tasks with my non dominant side. So, for example, if one is right handed, then use the left to complete tasks such as teeth brushing, eating, opening doors etc. I find using the non dominant hand (or foot) brings my attention to the task in hand. Hope this hope someone.

    My mind is just like a still lake in a beautiful forest, and my thoughts and emotions are the animals who come and take a sip from that lake and leave again... i just observe them, because when i involve myself the lake will become more wavy and unruly... Whenever i feel all over the place i go back to the lake in my mind and notice it is not as still anymore and calm it down, and when i have done that i am back in mindfulness mode immediatly.. :-)

    I suffer from Major Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and a mild form of Bipolar Disorder as a result of the medication taken for Major Depression. That being said, I am in a greater place now compared to where I was over year ago prior to manning up and seeking help from a psychiatrist and/or therapist. Given this improvement, I have had a constant desire to further improve myself due to still having moments of inexplicable anger that borders on rage (which is never acted out). You, sir, are amazing. I feel as though your insight and advice will help me on my journey of self-improvement (I am improving myself for myself and hope that this improvement will positively impact the lives of my loved ones and those who I encounter.) Thanks, man!

    I lost a job that I dearly loved and moved back in with my parents. It was very tough but I was able to not freak out about it. I kept taking the right action and I was at peace with what happened. I watched the videos by Leo in my free time and tried to read mindfulness books to keep my happy and at peace even when I was poor and felt worthless. Now that I got through that I feel stronger. It was very tough, but if you are going through a tough time just keep reading and keep moving forward.

    I just love when you mention meditation at the end and you say:
    "meditate for 20 minutes everyday. I suggest you commit to that for the rest of your life"
    You say it like it's nothing, like you were talking about meditating everyday for a week. Just that attitude towards a concept like the rest of ones life is deeply inspiring to me.

    Gypsy Morgan No, it's not too distracting. I'm not talking about some neurotic self-absorption. I'm talking about mindfulness -- which is simply pure conscious awareness without identification with thought or emotion. You are actually going to have better off if you get mugged while you're being mindful. Mindfulness is not about being stuck in thoughts. Mindfulness is Buddha-mind. It's awareness. The more awareness the better. That is why oriental martial arts places emphasis of meditation and consciousness work. Mindfulness makes you a great fighter.

    I'm dealing with panic attacks for the first time in my life, and mindfulness is one of the biggest helps I've had so far. It was initially described to me as to simply try 'and overcome animal instincts with human ones' - which is a bit bulky when panic wakes you up in the middle of the night - so my brother forwarded me 'mindfulness' as a search term, and the targeted meditation has been SO on point. Still a ways to go, but I'm optimistic about the entire process in the long-term.

      that's basic breathe awareness meditation. Mindfulness is different. It's about learning to live in the present by focusing on your THOUGHTS, and EMOTIONS, and how you REACT to your situation. This will help you build the wisdom to know how to CHANGE your mental reactions in the future to create a more positive outcome for yourself and the world.

    Thank you for this.
    My awareness level is super low at all times. I ALWAYS forget what to say when speaking to people like every 10th minute. I always lose the thread in conversations and am every where at once mind wise after going through a depression and learned to just slip out of reality while playing computer games. I lost the depression but the awareness level was still as low since I kept playing computer. Now I stopped playing 4 days ago and started bettering this for about 3 weeks ago when I really tried to focus on what my issue with my singing was.
    I need to just settle down with what I'm doing. Other things will have to wait and I need to be able to keep my focus. I can't even read without getting stuck and re-reading a sentence many times during pages and it's very bad due to that anxiousness starts to build.
    If we put it like this, I have breathing problems that affects my singing badly due to too little airflow. It also affects my training when I'm holding my breath due to that it's so heavy to take breaths until I'm done with the set.
    Despite all of this, I wasn't aware enough to pin down the fact that I have a breathing problem for at least 5 years back and probably more.
    If I want to succeed in my life I got to change this. It's time to double down on learning how to focus.

Then brain tries to find reason for your physical condition and creates state in your mind that's called emotion. If you focuse on your body and relax it, you prevent emotion from appearing or decrease it

    NOTE TO EVERYONE: never pay for mindfulness... there are enough ppl teaching it for free from the empathy of their heart; thus there is a vacuum of profit making in mainstream mindfulness... and of course that is filled with profit hunting mindfulness teachers. This isn't a bad thing, but it is definitely a thing. Save your money, there are plenty of free resources.

      By wanting people to follow your advice you are encouraging them to not support perhaps the most important field of life. I started meditating about 3 months ago, at first I only listened to my calm music and focused on my breath. But after a while I started to develop my breathing into taking more deep breaths etc, so I became more and more mindful as a result of that. But it troubled me that I wasn't mindful for the majority of the day, but only during the meditation and a while afterwards. So for the last month I've been focusing on my breath throughout most of my day which have resultet in me being mindful a LOT. This has trully been life changing!

    I'd like to ask if I am mindful of what i am doing, isn't that preventing thoughts from coming up? Instead of being fully immersed in what I am doing, I have to reallocate some of my brain power to observing myself while still doing what I am doing...
    Or how do you think normally while still observing you? Where do you take that extra concentration from?
    Mindfulness means observing without changing anything, but by using my energy to observe, I can't be as immersed in the activites as I would if I didn't observe myself. I hope this is comprehensible.

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      At first it feels like a strain because you're presently so low-consciousness that it takes lots of effort to simply be aware. As you practice more, the awareness becomes more effortless. Mindfulness is not additional layers of thinking, so it doesn't use much energy. But it is difficult because it is so foreign to you.

      Actualized.org I have the same "issue" as sam and I've been contemplating about this as well.. So what do you suggest doing? Still practising doing daily activities mindfully: observing the mind as the thoughts come and go and then refocus on the activity? And whenever thoughts come on the way again, do the same thing and then refocus? Etc. Yeah, indeed it takes a lot of effort. :p I've been practising mindfulness for a bit more than 2 weeks now, meditation for around 8 days. After 4 days of first really really deeply practising mindfulness I managed to be so present in the now and then later I experienced a fall which led to the very beginning where I was before, and then it happened again and now I'm in the same position.. Hahah :D I guess still learning.. to find the balance :)

      I think the point is that, when you're doing something on auto pilot such as brushing your teeth, you're thinking of your plans for the weekend, work, problems, something embarrassing you did earlier that week, etc. (future or past, and not the present) If you are mindful, you don't go on auto pilot and then delve into your problems & get stressed. You just focus on the action itself, brushing the teeth, you think of the foam, your teeth, the movement, etc, just be in the present, instead of the usual doing something while thinking of another.

      @pipsch12 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      scully yeah, that's what it is. but quite honestly, brushing your teeth is so easy and boring, it's really hard to pay attention to it. i've tried it several times. sometimes i can do it, but only if I slow down with the brushing first and pretend my teeth needed extra cleaning or i needed to be extra precise...
      same goes for other things that are really easy. like chopping some food. it's so easy that i do it really quickly and then it's done in seconds and you can't even focus on it... that's really my problem. mindfulness means slowing down for me.

    Thank you for posting this video. You made it clear how suffering shows up as problems in other areas of life. I see this in my own life as my performance has suffered at work ever since my workload and stress level increased. I started getting depressed. The mistakes made were because I was not mindful and felt tormented. Then, it just perpetuated with performance and my "suffering" getting worse and worse. I almost stopped volunteering and church ministry events as well as playing Ultimate Frisbee. I worked more and felt worse. It wasn't until this Christmas Eve I started mindful meditation(only a couple times a day). Then, I realized I could be mindful all the time. I just started this weekend doing what you talk about in your video and will I am sure I will see improvements in all areas of my life. Thanks again.

      Ironically, practicing mindfulness is a great tool for slowing down and processing a racing mind. I'd often find myself quick to anger, depression, or utter lack of control in the past. I over analyzed everything. Now I am learning and increasing in my ability to see the world in a light that puts me in the driver seat. Mindfulness with affirmations can lead to complete manifestation of your goals and basic wants- and furthermore help us all to just go with the path laid out before us. I am far from where I want to be spiritually, but alas life's a journey. We only may better ourselves more and more every day- whatever that means to us as individuals :)

      +ARNAB DAS Alan Watts The Way Of Zen is really great. Leo Buscaglia as well! Those two authors along with their antithesis in a way, but a great book is Nausea by Jean Paul Sartre and existentialism. Living, Loving and Learning, whoever that is by. The Lyrics of Jerry Garcia and following the Grateful Dead around wias a great way to learn what unconditional love and a life just filled with giving and loving, the music was the drug, it was hypnotic. I will never ever not be so grateful that I cant' even thank them enough. When I was 12 going on 30 I read all of these types of things. I love contemplation. My husband and I were unalike that way.

    If when doing a lot of self development you learn to never take things personally and value your opinion, over others how do you know when you're doing wrong?

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no wrong. Wrong only exists in thoughts.
      All morality is derived from the state of being mindful. When you are mindful and lose your sense of ego, you automatically act in the most ethical and compassion way possible because you make no distinctions between you and the rest of the world. This is perfect because all your actions become internally grounded without need for outside validation.

      Right, I understand and agree too, but I think my problem is a little different. Not too long ago a girl mentioned to me that I was cocky. Now I'm not offended by this I always prefer the truth and I know it's just her dream of life and so on. However 3 other people said the same thing (unrelated at different times) and I've never heard that before, and one of which was my karate Sensei who is much more experienced than I am so if he said it that's definitely how he saw it. But whether or not I am cocky wasn't really what bothered me. What bothered me is that if I truthfully don't feel as though I'm cocky but hypothetically it is a fact that I am, how would I know when I'm behaving in these unfavorable ways? And from that how do you know what is and isn't true about yourself? I understand that that's a perpetual just unadvised thing to focus on but sometimes it seems the only clarity I can get about myself in some aspects has to come from an outside source.

    • @ActualizedOrg
      @ActualizedOrg  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Paulk You can look at that as just a form of external feedback. Assess it rationally and adjust whatever behaviors you want. For example, in business you will want to assess the market's reactions to your products to hit certain sales goals. I assess your guys' feedback about my videos as a whole to make sure Actualized.org hits it's goals to influence people in the ways I have set out for myself. The key is to do this without emotional attachments.

      Actualized.org For whatever reason I just got this notification. But since posting this I've went through your videos and made sure I wasn't just passively listening to the things you were saying and actually start applying it. So after that, I came to the same conclusion you said. But what's interesting though is that looking back at it my initial question is kinda laughable and so are a lot of things I used to do before I started doing the blueprint and self development. It makes me wonder what kinda things are in store for someone who has been doing it for as long as you have and longer. You should make a video about what your journey has been like and specifically what kind of phases are in store for us. Because for me in the last couple months when I actually think about it I've grown a ton and there's been several phases. I feel like once you emphasize the possibilities of how great you can get with all the aspects of personal development that'd be a tight motivational video.

    Leo, you are very charismatic and your speech is very clear and sincere. That is what we should all look for on people, so thank you for your videos and the way you speak!
    I'd like to share an experience that I had today. Here is what I wrote to a friend:
    "Today I experienced it (mindfulness) while walking on the street. I just unfocused my vision and my senses, and I experienced the imediateness of the present as a whole - all of the sounds and movement. With it, also came a feeling of Unity. I stopped thinking for a second or two. I only experienced through non-judgemental observation and conscious breathing.Man it worked. I felt a spike of joy and bliss. I think that is what every article on Mindfulness talks about, the joy and bliss of Silence."
    I also just realized that I went on AUTOMATIC and deviated my attention abruptly. When I finished watching your video, while humming a song (in my head I think, I don't know), I had the intention of logging on youtube so that I could post this comment.
    But instead, I just stared at the phone and started to think about a friend who just came back from China, and how bad I want to play table tennis with him and all. Basically, my mind BRANCHED out.
    Realizing this, through Mindfulness, I laughed at myself and gently reminded myself to breathe consciously and complete the task at hand.
    So, I am just starting to practise Mindfulness. I am glad I found your video, Leo. Also, an idea for a next video could be: Habits.
    How does Mindfulness relate to creating healthy habits...? Thanks!

      It takes 90 videos, 20+ hours and 200gbs of content to simply find your life purpose? How does Mindfulness which can be explained in 10 minutes also help to find your life purpose?
      I get confused because like Eckhart Tolle who says simply, BE and give in to what is, he has 500 books about it. I mean if the technique is so simple, why does it take so many videos and books to understand?
      Is it not enough to video a run-through of a teacher doing Mindfulness and speaking out loud about what his mind is saying, how he corrects that and finally goes into a quiet mind?
      I would think that would be the best video. All the lecturing seems so confusing and creates such a stigma of hard work around such a simple concept.
      Just a thought.

    Hey Leo, just wanted to commend you for your effort in trying to teach mindfulness. I actually did my undergrad senior project on mindfulness in the management. Turns out (and you probably already know this) there has been a significant amount of studies done to gauge the effects of mindfulness and productivity in the work place, especially when it comes to management. Different companies are even paying big money to send their management personals to mindfulness training. The effects.... drum roll!!! You guessed it! Improved Management! Productivity increases because management are not blaming employees as much, employees are happier and work/creativity/enthusiasm is increased. This is truly a powerful concept, one which hopefully more people will grasp.
    Kodos my friend, you explained a very though concept very well!

It is tremendous how my environment changed and people reacted differently towards me and i finally could see how i used to react to stimulus and got into conflicts easily and got easily triggered and how after mindfulness, i was able to just embrace the discomfort and take on the right action instead which led to better relations.

    I agree Leo, suffering is conceptual, it's our mental experience of pain, loss, craving etc but when a friend dies, we injure ourselves or we hear of an awful event in the news, at THAT moment our suffering is very real. This is the first noble truth, that suffering is an unavoidable reality of human existence, as we cannot control many of the circumstances of our lives. If we push it away or deny it we are practising aversion and denying ourselves our fullness of being. There is no failure in suffering, contrary to our Western belief system.Mindfulness is seeing clearly and honestly what is happening in this moment, approaching difficulty rather than controlling or overpowering it -which shifts us into our parasympathetic nervous system - our self-soothing/well-being system so that suffering ceases to be a threat. And then, maybe it's possible to dissolve that emotional or physical pain and experience a moment of liberation

Of course life is always a learning process and I am not perfect but, I have studied DBT for 2 years now and it is mainly a lot of Mindfulness techniques and I would never want to go back. I also think it's important to understand about staying in the "Wise Mind" and not being too far to the "Emotional Mind" or the "Reasonable Mind"... Glad to find you. I have been a follower of Anthony DeMello for many years. His book Awareness changed my life. A friend was at a retreat and and they played a tape of Anthony DeMello, later my friend shared it with me.
    I am excited to discover Mindfulness, and the broader acceptance it seems to be getting in the public than awareness did.
    This is the first video of yours that I have watched. I am subscribing and eager to see the rest.
    Thanks

    I appreciate your work. I chose to be the best me I can be. Through that process I have learned that something like mindfulness is a major key in my development. I remember exact phrases of exactly what you said in my conversations with a friend of mine. It never occurred to me to document these matters. I am glad that you have and it makes it easier to convey these concepts to people that I see where I was. I am 57, it's never too late.

    I practiced it for 1 year. I practiced 10 minutes a day in the morning while I was just getting out of my depression (still taking my meds thought) and to help me fight an addiction and my heart problems. I also got into university that year and it was great. I never had that focus, that attention in my whole life. I was living to my fullest, happier, fighting less and shining brightly. Alas the pandemic came and ruined it all.

    This helps improve my concentration tremendously. Reading science textbooks is a breeze by practicing mindfulness meditation.

    These are all valid and enriching points Leo. I just wanted to add that in neurophysiology we learned that we have a sort of pool of conscious resources that we can use throughout the day (Schwan & Hesse, 2004). Ths explains why we cant be mindful 100% of the time and why we, as you've said, "forget" to practice it.
    I think that the benefit of meditation and of practicing observing ego is that they can increase the amount of congetive ressources we have.

    Leo, Thank you so much. You are always a fresh breath of slap in the face that we all need :) Straight forward, easy to understand, real people talk. I love it and I should be commenting and liking more often. I think the word "Mindfulness" can be confusing to some not yet familiar. Younger people especially, it kind of sounds like hard thinking and hard work. It can be misleading. I am trying to master Mindfulness in my life, as well as simple explanations and examples to teach in elementary schools. Most of us were taught by "Pay Attention!!" screamed at us 20x a day. Mindfulness leads to more conscious thought, less negative beliefs instilled, and finally to generation of conscious creators. It would be wonderful if our children didn't have to do years of self help and therapy to figure out what we now know (but too stuck in our beliefs to apply it) The educational system (in Boston anyway) hasn't modified it's curriculum much to include this knowledge. I think they would do just fine by replacing some math with some LOA. Your videos are real-life unique and just so helpful, I hope to teach children in a similar way. Grateful for you!

    I always watch this channel to get my daily dose of inspiration. I can add that journaling, using the personal pronoun "I" in the present tense and with very clear terms helps developing mindfulness, along with meditation in the first place.

    Thank you for this video. I think this will really help. You are right when you said that when one is emotional, one suffers and he does not even know it...so, mindfulness will help him get out of this "trap" and be calm. Once he masters this art, he will be better in life and enjoy life more. This is so good, I want to learn about your meditation method and want to meditate daily.
