The name "RCA" connectors comes from the name Radio Corporation of America, which was the company that basically began the age of radio and then television, and then color tv, in the United States. They were located in New York City, and literally created the radio and television broadcast industry, by either buying up every electronics-related patents and inventions, or inventing them (as in the case of NTSC color tv) in their own laboratories. They also invented the 45-rpm vinyl record format, in 1949. They invented the connector as a simple method of making internal connections in their radio and phonograph consoles. The connector became very popular, and has been called the "RCA" (or "phono") connector ever since. There is a wikipedia entry called 'RCA connector' where you can find its entire history.
Thanks for sharing this. I just finished adding bluetooth to a Sony CFS-930 as a birthday present for my sister. I used (I think) the same bluetooth module, with an LM317-based regulator to drop the internal 9-10V down to 3.7V, and 4-pole dual-throw (4P2T or 4PDT) switch to handle the connections. The tape deck still works, the radio still works and, with a flick of the new switch on the back, the bluetooth works! (with some noise from a ground loop somewhere). Your videos were a great guide and I found them very helpful. Thanks again!
"the 2 open 2 close" switch configuration is called "double pole double throw" or simply "DPDT" here in the USA but I just watched all three of those videos and can't remember from which one the switch was incorporated... ahaha anyways, great videos, the intro to them are awesome as well! peace.
i found this video and im fucking glad, this is exactly what i need cos earlier today my neighbour just asked if i could help figure a bluetooth option for his old Sony mp3/tape player he loves dearly. as a sort of Yes guy i did but i knew i was in trouble as soon as i realised the line-in/Aux missing,not even an RCA connectors at the back🤣.my hope was to simply get him a 5.0 bluetooth module from Amazon to serve as the middle man between SONY and his SAMSUNG smartphone . well anyway its a blessing to find GEMS on YT from time to time like some brilliant ,overly generous person sharing a library of wealth of knowledge..just priceless and inspiring!!
Its not too often I hear RCA these days with the move towards HDMI and Digital Audio, but the term still gets used (though sometimes people drop the name in favor of what the function of the RCA jacks do, like AUX for AUxilery inputs or Phono for Record Player inputs on stereos/amps)
In my part of the US they are either "RCA" connectors, or some older guys call them "phono plugs", as they old connections from phonographs often used the same type of plug, although they were usually black and mono, so only one cable carrying a single channel of audio. Some older systems used the same connector style as RCA for things like the antenna, loudspeakers, etc.
The name "Cinch" is also used in Poland. Cinch is also used to name a peace of a horse saddle (the strap you put around the horses belly). No idea how those are similar.

And after this word has been adopted in English and some other languages, it obtained a more generic meaning "to tightly encircle something". Like, for example, a type of corset - "waist cincher".
I've learned some new things! I've done a few of these hacks before. All with the TDA7492P 50W+50W Wireless Bluetooth 4.0 Audio Receiver Digital Amplifier Board. I have been experiencing some wierd noise (tied to the rpm of the engine) when I use that card in my car stereo. Maybe it's because I'm using a shitty 12v cigarette plug? Are those plugs giving bad dc?
I'm in the process of doing this to my 20yrold aiwa boom box...I just discovered I can use the mic input as aux (yes 20yrs ago Aux input was not a thing on all radios ) if I push play on the tape deck...yeah no more radio..I even took swapped out the speakers for some Kenwood's and now I gotta get inside to bypass no RCA so I can add an eq a amp and some boom.
Your videos are amazing! I was wondering if I could bypass the AM radio, since no one really ever listens to that anyhow, and place a line in AUX there? I don't like adding switches to my faceplate, so using the AM radio setting switch is what I'm trying to accomplish. Are there any issues with AM being amplified strangely or something? I would be fine with pulling the AM guts.
Not only do you not want to have to worry about the internal battery of the BT receiver being unchargeable after so many years, but even having to charge it separately would be a pain in the butt; it ought to act like it was part of the boombox all along. But then you could use the boombox's power supply to recharge it either from mains or from the boombox's batteries, but even that can present at least one overcomplexity problem: that the eventual nonrechargeability of that battery will come back to bite you. So yeah, I agree, ideally this would be best... but then of course there's that problem of audio noise that can come back to bite you as well. So hmm... "6 vs. half a dozen," eh? I like that you used the USB charger to keep charging receiver's battery while the boombox is powered by mains, but that doesn't address trying to get it done with the D cells, nor does it fix the eventual nonrechargeability, so it would be good to still find a more elegant/permanent solution. I guess there's still the buying of a modern combo boombox that already has these features, but there are only like maybe 2 models like this, if I remember right, so our choices are pretty limited. Although... maybe only 2 choices are all we need if they're good machines.
Guys guys... Those 2 dollar bluetooth receivers are total crap in my point of view. Am I the only one finding them to have very poor highs and no low end? Werent those meant for old bt headsets or handsfree devices? Better get the 4$ CSR8635 module. You will be impressed by the quality of the sound. I promise.

I understand it's a more accessible project when you use a simple USB charger on AC to power things, but I think I would have preferred using a DC-DC buck converter to go from the unit's internal power, then it could have run the bluetooth from either AC or battery. Then again, the unit will probably never actually be used on battery. I think if I were using a unit like that much, I would put some 18650 lithium cells in along with charging circuitry - rather than buy C or D cells or whatever it is using.
John Ridley You'd still have to get the right voltage and stuff. But yeah, I guess it's doable, and 18650s are commonly available (if you don't want to buy them, just harvest them out of some old laptop batteries).
Seegal Galguntijak You don't have to do anything. You can buy the module to handle the entire thing for dirt cheap. I have 18650s lying around, I use them in projects all the time, they're the easiest to deal with given the chargers and boost converters you can buy for about a buck on eBay these days.
I have a very similar Stereo (Hitachi TRK-W530E) which I have been meaning to modify with an internal bluetooth module such as this, but it runs from 8 D-cell/IEC R20 batteries which is inconvenient and expensive. I'm planning on replacing them with a single 12v rechargeable power pack but I'm confused as to which variety of battery would be appropriate for this application considering the runtime needed as well as the available space inside the compartment. May I ask what you would recommend?
Hoping you can help. I have a security camera that has a weak speaker. I only have access to the black and red speaker wires. The camera is not able to be opened. Is there anyway to connect these two wires to a Bluetooth transmitter as an audio output?
Your right, i just got used to the standard. Perhaps if i had been born in the 80's then the rca would be all i knew. The 5 pin din had a habit of not being a standard pinout, the earth was allways the middle pin, but the inputs and outputs could be at eather end, if you didnt have the correct cable you didnt get anywhere, a 1-1 cable or 1-5 cable, annoying at times lol :-D

Yes i bought connectors from maplin, then tandy, i did much the same. Long live the speccy :-D, i still have a few on a shelf, wont get rid of. Also the 5 pin din was used on the back of ye-olde vcrs, i made the cables to rip off.... err make personal copys of videos lol :-D.
zx8401ztv grumble,,,there was no tandy, and no maplin in my day! it was a matter of finding an electrical supplier, and back then it was trade accounts only, so you have to find a friendly one for a few bits and bobs, its where i got my first multimeter, an old avo , but the ranges were made for industrial electricican use, not low voltage, tandy was a revelation when i think we got one in about the mid 80s.

I live in Germany. I'm used to calling these RCA/Cinch connectors "Bananenstecker" (= Banana connectors). Don't ask me why. seems be some remnant artifact from way back when phone operators were using plugs to switch phone connections on a switchboard. I only use Cinch when shopping around because it specifically means this type of RCA connector. Where as Banana connectors refer to a bunch of similar connectors. The whole Connector terminology landscape is a whole clusterfuck. A mish mash of English and German official names and their colloquialisms. Sometimes it's hard to know WTF you are talking about. I prefer the Englisch terminology. #WelcomeToGermany

Sorry to be a pedant but thought you might like to know that "backside" in common English (UK) usage means bottom, butt, arse , buttocks etc. Commonly, the expression you need is "rear", "rear side", "reverse", "reverse side" or just "back" (without the side!). Not that I'd want to really change your charming and idiosyncratic way of speaking.

In usage its its said; to cinch up. otherwise the general meaning is to make a firm connection. Why say Cinch instead of RCA connector? it depends on the language, the slang, the usage and how easy it is for the word to roll off the tongue.

My friend you are wrong. In Serbia a lot of German words are in use. Today some of English words. But tools are still named by German words. Also CINC we use to. RCA is used over ebay and some of new modern kids but we older ones still use those terms. I can tell you a lot of misuse of German words for tools because some people don't know that GEDORE is a name of company not a specific tool and a lot of people knows that but simply use that word for a specific tool. My Father is half German so my Grandmother use only German words so did I. I work in printshop and a lot of words are still German. Like Druck (press) or machine or Srafciger (guess what it is I wrote it on Serbian) and so on. We say Printing machine and USA use Printing Press so as you can see your German influence after WW2 is still here. German engineering is what fascinate me also Serbian old repairman are using skills like yours when repair tools or machines. I do not speak German but I am familiar with a lot of German frases. Some models of cassette players require the play button to be pressed before allowing any audio to pass from the heads. And then, some don't.

Quite the project. If you want to put 18650s in series, you'll have to balance their charge and so on.

dunno.. In Germany I just say RCA in.. cinch is also used in Netherlands.. it's just an abbreviation for RCA or tulip plug

In Lithuania we call RCA connectors "tulips" because the RCA plug looks like a tulip.

The Rca jacks are nicer to use than some connectors, a 5 pin Din was typical on older systems, not used so often now.
i think German.French equipment used the 5 pin din a lot later than we did, in the UK it seemed to die out on the 70's systems.

PLEASE TELL ME; how can I hook up my MP3 player to my boombox speakers without soldering anything around inside.. I don't need Bluetooth device just a simple MP3 player to Boombox wiring connection.
Sorry to be a pedant but thought you might like to know that "backside" in common English (UK) usage means bottom, butt, arse , buttocks etc. Commonly, the expression you need is "rear", "rear side", "reverse", "reverse side" or just "back" (without the side!). Not that I'd want to really change your charming and idiosyncratic way of speaking.

Cinch, is English for kinderspiel. In usage its its said; to cinch up. otherwise the general meaning is to make a firm connection. Why say Cinch instead of RCA connector? it depends on the language, the slang, the usage and how easy it is for the word to roll off the tongue.

My friend you are wrong. In Serbia a lot of German words are in use. Today some of English words. But tools are still named by German words. Also CINC we use to. RCA is used over ebay and some of new modern kids but we older ones still use those terms. I can tell you a lot of misuse of German words for tools because some people don't know that GEDORE is a name of company not a specific tool and a lot of people knows that but simply use that word for a specific tool. My Father is half German so my Grandmother use only German words so did I. I work in printshop and a lot of words are still German. Like Druck (press) or machine or Srafciger (guess what it is I wrote it on Serbian) and so on. We say Printing machine and USA use Printing Press so as you can see your German influence after WW2 is still here. German engineering is what fascinate me also Serbian old repairman are using skills like yours when repair tools or machines. I do not speak German but I am familiar with a lot of German frases. In the Netherlands too. We also used to call them "tulp" (tulip) connectors because the plugs look a bit like tulips (the flowers).
