  • This is a guide on how to do a full service on a Land Rover Freelander TD4 (2001-2006) for anyone who does not want to pay a mechanic to do this simple job.
    I'm not a professional mechanic, so i welcome more experienced people who think that there may be different ways of doing the tasks I show in this video.
    The video contains details on how to change the oil and the following filters: air, oil. pollen/cabin, crankcase breather, turbo vent and fuel filters. I also go on to explain how to check your braking system and your fluids.
    I also talk briefly about changing your EGR valve for an EGR bypass.

    Now we know why a full garage service costs a fortune on the Freelancer. First class video and quality work.

      Shouldn't cost a fortune, the parts are very cheap and a service is straightforward for a DIY job

    I've took my freelander for a full service few weeks ago at this garage near my house, only to discover 3 days later when it broke down that nothing has been done and the fuel filter was the same since the car was made, 11 years old. as you could imagine it was all rooted and blocked which caused the fuel pump to go as well. Anyway I had to take the owner of the garage to court as he was going around the bush. now I'm going to try my self after watching this video, I hope I don't get stuck. cheers for a great simple video!!

      Yup... unfortunately, mechanics has a tendency to be dodgy... hence why like to do my own services. It's not rocket science really, you're just replacing filters and checking for wear. Plus you have peace of mind, and more beer money in your pocket!

    Once you know where the drain plug is for the oil, use a hole cutter to make a large enough access point in the under tray for future oil changes, makes the job so much easier and doesn't affect the vehicle in any way :)

    UPDATE: I've had a chance to test the consumption now after fitting the EGR bypass valve. Before I was getting 30mpg and now i'm getting 31.8mpg which means I'm now getting nearly 25miles of extra milage per full tank of fuel. At the current rate of €1.30/ltr thats a saving of €7.10 per full tank. Considering the EGR bypass cost me €35, it will pay for itself after 5 full tanks.
    You must also bare in mind that aside from the better economy, the main benefit of fitting the EGR bypass is the long-term benefit to the health of the engine.

    it's probably best to leave the EGR system as manufactured in a direct firing diesel engine. EGR reduces the temperature of combustion ( and hence the NOX pollutants ) by introducing inert (spent) gases into the combustion chamber in carefully measured amounts by the engines computer. When you remove it, you may notice some increase in power or economy due to the increased cylinder heat and hence pressure. This apparent short term increase in performance is why many mechanics recommend the procedure. But this increase in heat and pressure also causes premature failure of the direct firing fuel injectors since the tips of the injectors are directly in the combustion chamber. New injectors cost between $500 - $1000 EACH normally. It will also cause failure of the injector to cylinder head seals - usually a copper washer arrangement - and this results in mixing of coolant into fuel or fuel into engine oil ( or both ). This may entirely destroy your engine due to cross contamination, as well as causing the famous "run away diesel" phenomenon where the diesel revs out of control and blows up despite being turned off - due to it running on it's own fuel soaked engine oil. This is apart from the premature failure of exhaust valves and piston rings and turbochargers due to the abnormally high temperatures. A cynic might conclude that a mechanics real reason for recommending the disabling of the EGR system is the guarantee that he will make $1000's of dollars from the poor sap who does it when the engine goes pop.

    When you have spent about an hour removing the engine undertray JUST TO DRAIN the oil. Why not cut a small square under the drain plug and make a cover out of some aluminium sheet and secure it with clips. Then it only takes a minute to get at the sum plug to drain the oil. WHY didn't Land Rover think of that....Pete in Worcester

    Great video, has given be all the tips I need to give my freelander a service as only just bought it. I bought all the bits, but the only differnce is the oil filter is the exact same as yoour but the filter kit, only came with a sump washer, a smaller copper washer, and 1 large rubber o ring. Do I not need the two small rubber o rings, and what is the copper one for. Again many thanks for a great video.

    • @jimilesaint
      @jimilesaint  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      L61kvo Hi. Glad you're diving in! Haven't a clue what the copper washer would be for... I haven't seen that before. The large O-ring is for the oil filter... ideally you would change the small rubber rings on the oil filter cap too. Nevertheless non-official LR parts supplier's small O-rings are commonly slightly out in size. When I did the one on the video, the tiny O-ring at the end was too big, so I just left the old one on. If this is the case, I'd advise to buy original LR oil filter O-rings next time you do an oil change. Meanwhile, it probably won't be a big problem to leave the old ones on for now.

    • @jimilesaint
      @jimilesaint  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My injectors went too. LR dealership wanted €1000 each!! I ended up having them sent off to be recondition and recalibrate a at about €800-900. Remember to always change your diesel filter as the car gets older, and also try and use manufacturer fuel... like Shell, Esso, BP... and NOT supermarket diesel. The cheap diesels are cheap for a reason. If you want to keep your engine clean, buy fuel wisely.

    • @denismgajeni5110
      @denismgajeni5110 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can help you on injectors, remove them all, wash them with diesel or petrol and brow them with compressor air, wait the to dry, if you used petrol, then at the end of washing, Use diesel again after petrol dries, then check your thread of your injectors, if they are good, put them back and bleed them one by one

      Nick Tilimian Nick, I'm no expert, but that sounds like nonsense. It's either behind the battery on the early models, or under the rear wheel arch on the drivers side, on the facelift model. Its difficult to get to, and mechanics usually don't bother changing them... but if you watch my video, you can see how to do it yourself. It's a bit of a pain, but it's worth it 👍

    Vertical battery terminal connection bolt and nut, stupidest idea I have ever seen.. Causing no end of problems... Until finally sorted out by replacing them with horizontal ones.. When I do a service on a vehicle.. Motorbike or other... I always scan and print the receipts for consumables/ parts if required... To add to the service history.. Log the mileage and or take photos of the mileage with a local newspaper included.... If you use a garage then try to find one other people you know or trust have recommended.. If you are using a garage for the first time or are not confident about their honesty I always make a permanent mark in a hidden area of the parts that will be replaced.. oil, air filter or fuel pump.. Even for other larger parts to be repaired or replaced such as starter motor, alternator.. Anything and everything. A small ultra violet pen is a great friend of the car owner or a hacksaw or small point chisel? Mine has the BMW engine too.. Chain for a timing belt.. Sorted..
