I have been using the RTH a few times, both for practice and for real. I hadn’t really registered the Pause function. I’ll be trying that out shortly. I’m a very novice drone operator, and not so young (81). Thanks for this video.
Nicely done. You sound like you're very well schooled in your presentation skills. Very easy to listen to and the info was spot on. Appreciate the video!
Thanks for the great video. One thing you might tell people is that to cancel the RTH and land the drone manually you must hit the same pause button to cancel the RTH sequence.
It's actually possible to just press cancel on the screen display. But it's also possible to press the same hardware button that sent the drone home in the first place.
That's true. When I was a first time flyer, I'd instantly panic when I lose sight of the drone. This is very useful info that is not discussed often when introducing the basics.
At 9:20 you talk about a RTH where height is set below tree height and drone will “introduce itself to the tree.” Will obstacle avoidance prevent that? And if so, what will the drone do after stopping? Will it APAS around the tree?
Great video Rick I have know about the pause/RTH button but have not messed with it. I will when I go out next. I heard you say it stops the joy stick from working how do you get the joy stick to start working again. Thank you
Hi, thanks for great video, I haven't even flown yet, hence this was very helpful. I noticed when you decided to cancel the RTH as it wasn't directly over the landing pad, you pushed the screen - I would have expected the pause button which this video is about - was it a screen pause button alternative? Thanks again!
When clicking once on RTH button to pause, you say sticks do not allow you to move. How do you allow it to move after, do you just click again once to gain stick control ?
Glad it was helpful! I missed this button when I first started flying and it's saved me a few times. I'll have a few more drone related reviews this week so be sure to stay tuned.
Thanks Rick. The mini's are so easy to lose sight of because of their size - so after seeing this video, I'm going to start practicing the pause and RTH button the next time I fly.
Rick, regarding RTH, you answered my question that I have been trying to get answered for awhile....and that is "how close to the mat will it land?"...I have a mini2 and it was not great at all and like you did in the video, I would interrupt RTH before it landed. My Mini3 is in the mail 😉 so am not able to test it yet, but your test was very close...hoping for a firmware update also....thanks for the video!!!
I thought the RTH behaved differently based on how far the drone is from the Home Point. The three distances are: 0m-5m (Lands immediately). 5m-50m (returns to Home Point at its current altitude). 50m plus (raises to RTH altitude if lower) then returns to Home Point. Can you test and confirm? Bruce
Bruce, this is my understanding as well. That said, I can't see myself needing or wanting to use RTH within 5 meters, and generally, my VLOS is good within 50m, but that, of course, depends on the flying environment and my level of "panic" when I lose sight of that tiny drone off in the distance. Excellent point; thanks for the reminder.
Great points! I particularly like to use Pause/Cancel/Brake button for cancelling Active Tracking, then that second press to unselect the user & cancel Focus Track entirely. I can't tell you how many times I had an unresponsive drone that wouldn't yaw, or pitch and seemed "stuck" - until you see you are still selected in Focus Track, or with recent releases, in Mastershots or Quickshots. As long as a subject is selected, you cant land, or have full flight control. FYI Precision landing has been fully enabled. To be more precise
II wish I had remembered that. I was having a really good first flight and decided to do POI before I drove home. The DJI Mini 3 Pro went straight into a tree and I needed to get it replaced under DJI care. I should have just hit the button, but I forgot it was there
Nice info. But after you hit the pause button, you said that none of the sticks will function. My question is to get control of the drone again, what do you do? I'm assuming you have to press the pause button again?!?
Brilliant video Rick thank you. Our mini 3 pro is on order, due mid next month. Never had a drone before. I can’t understand why DJI would introduce a drone on the market with so many faults to begin with like the poor range/signal. Then having so many firmware updates just after release. I find it frustrating not even owning a done 😂 lol. Wish DJI would have their drone fine tuned before release. Then the occasional firmware updates for bugs along the way. This mini 3 pro range/signal issue will put a lot of people off. Kind Regards
Hi Rick, All generally good tips. But I think there are two things which should have been mentioned. Firstly, I am a great believer in having a take of check list. This list should include (IMO) that you have set an *appropriate* RTH height for this flight. Also that the RTH did get updated should be checked after takeoff. Setting the height per flight is a good idea to ensure you are high enough above obstacles (although the mini 3 manual says it will avoid them if there is something in front when returning - not tested this). Also it can be good to not have it too high especially if it is windy. You don’t want the drone flying off into the sunset as you’ve hit high winds due to a high altitude. The other condition that can catch you out is if you lose. Signal and you are say under a bridge. Again, not good if it then decides to ascend. Would be interesting to test how the Mini 3 does in this situation. Other comment is that the RTH height only applies if you are more than 50 metres away. If not, drone returns at current altitude. Worth noting. Cheers
Nice video. I think that button should be a switch that you can keep your finger on like we do with fpv race quads. In case of a crash will kill the throttle before any damage is done. If it was a button on the transmitter I would burn up motors, break props and no telling what else.
In flight business we call „take a breath“ = „Stop-Check-Operate“… that is our advise for flight attendance, for example, to open the door on an aircraft! STOP, CHECK, OPERATE! ;-)
Happy flying to you too Rick but I think you guys at the Drumm Valley Center need to come out with a iPad holder for the FPV drone controller design something nice🤓
If you short press the Pause/RTH button after you activated the RTH function, will it pause the drone returning to home? Or can you only long hold it to cancel the RTH?
I haven't tried that but will test it. My suspicion is that you'll have to cancel the RTH since that is an "emergency" function and will ignore all inputs but the cancel since the drone is essentially in charge of the flight once you trigger the RTH. Stay tuned for an update.
Precision landing is important to have because in some cases you don't have any control, even for the landing. For example, if the controller was to die on you.
my apologies, my eyes failed me this morning, after playing it again it truly did rise and return. Again accept my old eyes apology, good informative video.
No worries! I totally understand and had to go back myself and watch it to see if I missed something. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I'll have more Mini 3 Pro content posting this week so be sure to stop back. Rick
Hey Rick, just want to say thank you for the great content you put out. This is a great reminder for me to know all of the buttons on the controller to prevent me from losing or crashing my mini 2.
Hi. I have a newbie question. When you click and set the RTH height in the app, does it start measuring from the homepoint it started or in general where it is at? What I mean is, if you are on the mid-point of a mountain and you click on Rth. Will the height depend on the location of where the drone took off ?
As of today the pause button stops the drone and prevents every movement action EXCEPT YAW! When it is paused you can still rote the drone in place but altitude and any other movements directed from the controllers sticks are disregarded. I am on latest firmware
Thanks for the post and that's exactly what it's designed to do. It will pause for a few seconds and then allow you to resume flying. It's a great feature that can save you in a sketchy situation.
Thanks for the post but everything in this clip was recorded in real time. The RTH section showed what the drone does when you hit the RTH button and instigate a Return to Home. It elevates to the height you have set in the app, turns to face the takeoff point, flies back over the landing zone, spins back to it's original direction at takeoff and then lands. I showed all of that in the clip and it's something you should practice before you need to use it.
Thanks for the post but the more you fly, the more natural the controller will feel in your hands. Over time you'll be able to find all of the controls without even looking at the controller and the pause button is one of them you'll need to remember. You won't need to use it often but it can really save you from crashing if you get into trouble when flying.
Dude, are you kidding me? This was a solid clip with a lot of useful information that viewers appreciate. I can't tell you how many fliers didn't understand how the Pause button worked, so we did a clip explaining it. Just check the comments and you'll see it's helping. I know you're just getting started on TH-cam but maybe spend a little more time helping the drone community and a little less time shouting fire.
@@Dronevalley Fair comment perhaps I was being a bit harsh!! Things can get lost in software menu etc and sometimes you have to dig deep to find something. The DJI controllers have a limited amount of physical buttons and a drone operator should have good knowledge of what they do 🤔 If someone can understand the software then the physical buttons should be second nature? @@kernowradio Thanks for the reply and I was a bit harsh as well and I'm sorry. I agree that folks should fully understand the quad before flying but I spend a lot of time with new pilots in a flying group and somehow this one button confuses them so I thought a lot of other folks might have missed it as well. I hope you're getting a lot of great flying time in as you have a beautiful country. Stay tuned for more content this week. Thanks, Rick

Love your channel! BTW, why do we keep having to pretend that we have line of sight with our drones. Maximum distance is 7 miles? Come on.
Great and informative video. Keep up the great work. 🙏
Since the Mini 3 has forward crash avoidance, would it stop or dodge a too-tall obstacle during its RTH maneuver?
I feel more at ease after having tested out the Mini 3's RTH, accurate and efficient.
I've flown mine last 3 days been scared to use it. Bern up to 100 ft in height and distance. I'll get my nerve up tomorrow.
@@jtape1760 Lol, Yeah I'm the same. I think small steps is OK. There's a lot that has to become 2nd nature (AKA muscle memory).
Is obstacle avoidance disabled when returning to home?
