I was a builder for 25 years doing a lot of historical reno work, you would not believe all the stuff I found in walls ,attics and basements. One example, pulling down a beach town bungalow's ceiling 5 new 20$ bills floated down, silver certificates put there in 1929, new bills, uncirculated. They were stashed and forgotten and sold for more than face value.

1929 is the year the stack market crashed, interesting. I wonder if there's a correlation. A friend's father, who didn't trust banks, stashed money somewhere in their house, but nobody knows where. He died suddenly and nobody ever found the money.

My husband and I bought a house back in the early 80's. The house had been built in the late 30's to early 40's. They didn't have electricity there at the time so they didn't put any outlets in at all. Later when they got electricity they installed I think it was 3 outlets in the whole house. They had also put the sockets that you screw into the light fixtures in every room. While running new wiring and installing more outlets we found newspapers in the walls and they had used newspapers to wrap the pipes, also to put under the seams of where the linoleum pieces met. I loved looking through them, it was a little like going back in time.

Although that living room furniture was high priced, it was made to last. I own an easy chair, rocker and footstool my grandparents had before I was born. It was used when they bought it. The fabric has almost no wear, and aside from "character" nicks and bumps on wood parts, they are totally structurally sound, going on nearly 100 years old! Today you're lucky to get 10 years out of big box store furniture!

Fascinating! I have a scrapbook I made of newspaper clippings in 1978-1980. Fun to look back on. One article is about the miracle of technology as the first cable tv service started in Youngstown, Ohio in December, 1979. Warner Cable.

Back in the late 60s, my neighbors were replacing their living room window, the walls were stuffed with balled up newspapers from the 20s. Us kids spent the whole day smoothing the pages back out, taping them together, and looking at ads for food and clothing. We really didn't care much about the news.

During the restoration of my home I found newspapers of 1912 that they used to stuff holes between the wall and the doorframe before applying plaster (here we build houses using mostly concrete bricks, for my house they used sand stone and coral stone as concrete was not readily available at that time) so the kitchen extension of my house can be dated to 1912 because of the newspaper. I also found stacks of newspapers of that time period in the loft of this parts of the house. I saved those newspapers that were not damaged by termites. Love the ads of those times, only a very few of the companies advertising back then are still in existence, mostly banks and shipping companies.

My dad loved reading old papers and genealogy. He liked Farmer's Almanacs. I guess I get that love of these kinda things from him. Back in the early 60s we lived in Portland Oregon. I was 3 yrs old. My Aunt was notified somehow that a person who lives in that house was renovating and found my dad's wallet. It had his military ID, SS Card, a picture of my sister and some other papers. I have it and cherish it. Crazy how that lady found my aunt who doesnt have my dad's last name. Go figure!!

When I was twelve years old a neighbor showed me a whole series of my local paper. They had been mounted on poles for library use before the library put the whole newspaper on microfilm back to its first issue in1805. I immediately turned to the last pages and read all the comics. They ran from the early thirties for maybe ten years. The ones I remember most were Krazy cat and Blondie. Krazy was a cat that lived out in New Mexico and was in love with a mouse named Ignatz who she called Little Dollink or li'l anchell. When she got too romantic, Ignatz would bounce a brick off her head and Officer Pupp would haul him off to jail. Blondie was still single back then, working hard for low pay, and dating her spoiled, rich, and kind of kookie boyfriend Dagwood Bumstead. (Later, Dagwood would marry her, his parents would disown him for marrying such a low-class woman, and he would be forced to go out and get a job. Ninety years later and he still hasn't caught onto how to go about working for a living.

My dad kept old newspapers from WW2 in a pile. Many of the papers were Canadian as he was based in Winnipeg during much of the war. When he retired, he sorted them into numerical order/dates and put them into large boxes. Put them under the house so that he knew where they were. Yes, floods came in 1974, huge one, and though their home was quite high, he didn’t have the time to rescue them. He also lost his grandfathers books, all of Shakespeare. As he said, ces’t la vie….😍🇦🇺

Setup a photo copy stand with two lights and photograph completely several issues of these old newspapers.
Imagine how great it would be to preserve them for future generations of Archbolds to see.
Oh and they could put one copy of the project on digital media sealed inside a Mylar bag inside one of the walls in your new home to be randomly found in a hundred years perhaps. Of course they will have to go down to " Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe "
to buy an antique tablet to view the digital memory card on.

Good morning Alex, I needed a good laugh this cold raw day in Massachusetts. the late 20s
our countries were struggling and leading into the great depression of 1929. But you could take the family out for Christmas dinner for about 10 bucks. The ads were great! Don't
forget to tell Melissa that you did your humper exercise today. Thanks for sharing Alex

    So many memories....
My parents bought five lots from the city at 148th St. and 95th Ave for $40 ea, in the thirties. Then built a house with newspaper and sawdust in the walls. Had a mink farm there too until 1956.
I delivered the Journal along 142ond street beginning in 1950.
You could get a plate of cabbage rolls for .60 every Thursday in the Men's room in a local hotel, Toronto (1964).
Like your shirt...I saw them at the Bay here in T.O.

I love the old newspapers... That was a cool find! And I liked the one with the zeppelins. I live in NJ and live 6 miles from Lakehurst where the Hindenburg crashed. I was very lucky to attend the 75th anniversary of the date of the Hindenburg disaster and stood right on the naval base and spot where it crashed. Growing up you used to see quite a few of the "blimps' flying around. Thanks Alex for sharing that clip and newspaper collection. And love your new addition to your store! 👍👍👍

I would like to have gotten a closer look at those comics; that's the first thing I go to in the newspaper 😆

we had old newspapers under all of our flooring because the floors were tongue and groove and were pretty drafty. the ads made us all chuckle and some of the gossip columns were a bit colorful too.

I found an old page of newspaper in an apartment I was living in. It told the story about how a woman working for the army stole the treasure of the royal house of Hesse. Police arrived to her home in Hudson, Wisconsin as she was serving dinner on the Hessian royal family's best dinnerware.
