Last spring I had the profound honor of supporting a Lakota Sundance (Wiwang Wacipi) in Colombia. I have so many incredible memories from this experience, which has changed my life and continually guides me.
Downing the large tree, carrying it into the ceremony space and pulling it up again with ropes. The daily cleansing of the inipi or sweatlodge. The songs and the drums, the heartbeat of the ceremony.
The spirit of the dancers in their four day fast, prayer, and offering of the flesh, and the energy I gave them, and the power I just brushed the surface of - the presence of Wakan Tanka, Creator, the Great Mystery.
Perhaps, someday, if I am called, I will join the dance of the sun, to renew the cycles of the earth and humanity's connection to them. I realize my heart was not fully in alignment with the true purpose of the dance when I was there, but also that I am forgiven.
If I make the commitment to dance, it will be because I have set aside glory, ego, self-pity, and self-aggrandizement. This is the ongoing lesson the Sundance teaches me. I am always in the presence of the sacred, which is my duty to honor in all I do.
