    I just noticed, in the last scene when Beth is in the car with her State Department chaparone, another game was played. He, handed her talking points and intinerary. They, in effect, wanted her to be a pawn of sorts, in the bigger game of the Cold War. Beth, however counters, handing back the talking points, and having the car stop and let her out. She is the queen, not a pawn, and the queen goes where she wants and does what she wants. Cool.

    I love how Beth and Alma had the mother-daughter relationship develop over time. They both had something that was missing in their life. Beth never felt connection with her mother, Alma had a miscarriage and never gotten the chance to be a mother. I'm glad they made something with their relationship that viewers could understand way they love each other the way that they do.

    That basement experience is so profound. Geniuses are made in the bleakest, darkest, and remotest parts of society. Rarely could you find a genius built in a school. Geniuses grow and develop in silence. If Queen’s Gambit were to be retitled, it would be Basement.

    • @buttercupstruelove340
      @buttercupstruelove340 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      "Geniuses are made in the bleakest, darkest, and remotest parts of society." That's ridiculous. Genius, whether it's playing the game of chess, a musical prodigy, or an astrophysics wunderkind, can spring from any environment that encourages development. You can't form a generalization about gifted people from one entertaining but fictional film.

    • @elisem4489
      @elisem4489 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      idk man, geniuses can take a lot of opportunities from school. it exposes you to a lot of ideas and pushes you to do your best when otherwise you might have given up
      i don't think any one thing builds a genius, so school doesn't build a genius, yes, but neither does anything else. genius is part of the person, right, so a genius would take whatever they're given and work with it.

    • @danbev8542
      @danbev8542 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Malcolm Gladwell, in his book, “Outliers”, claims that geniuses, don’t have to be exceptionally brilliant, but must spend 10,000 hours at their craft to get to genius level. He never addresses what motivates someone to spend the 10,000 hours, instead of playing with friends, or watching tv. Mozart was shown off all over Europe, like a trained monkey. Bill Gates had access to a school computer in his teens. 10,000 hours makes sense to me, motivation & environment are all over the map, IMO.

Maybe once enough time passes, we will be lucky enough to find ourselves watching another person's character arc, through the battles of the obsessions of the game, and the struggle of genius.

    Anya is without doubt one of the most compellingly watchable actresses. Loved this series also because of the historical references. I grew up during the Cold War era and so many images and scenes in this movie remind me of that period. My elder brother taught me to play chess in the 1960s which gave me another point of entry into this story. Beth is a wonderful character emotionally complex and incredibly interesting and so so human. Best drama of recent times.

    I like the fact she came out okay at the end. I think that point is best illustrated during the scene where she gets the call from Benny, Harry, and the gang and they tell her they have been up all night studying her game with Borgov and offer her advice on how to beat him. The look on her face as she talks with Benny and Harry says it all. She knows she has friends who love her for who she is. For me, that is my favorite scene because it is the point where Beth realizes she's not alone. As Clarence tells George in It's a Wonderful Life, "No man is a failure who has friends."

How she tried one last time to get help only to be rejected by her father(?) and then as we approach the bridge again, her mother says "close your eyes". She realized her mom had given up and decided to take both of their lives. Beth survived.

      @@marzigeisha It's a rhetorical question actually, the reason they're doing this is to revive the hype around the show. It's just marketing.

    I really liked this show. I guess it was because I used to play a lot with my brother. It was a lot of fun. I started off winning most games until my brother started reading chess books and after a while he won most games. Drove me nuts but I still loved it.
    This series was unique and a really good story line. It was really well done overall. Kinda sad as well.

    I watched the show. Got pretty slow during the last 3 of 7 episodes. Also, it would’ve been nice if this was somewhat of a true story… but it’s completely fabricated from fiction. Made bizarrely to look like some sort of documentary-series.

    This is true, some scientists experienced this problem with their own minds. Which is always active.

    In the last scene, where she sits down with the old man and asks him if he wants to play chess, she's thinking of Mr.Shaibel .
