  • This year the off-road category just got a little deeper with the addition of Kawasaki throwing its hat into both the 450cc, and 250cc cross country ring. Both bikes got the same off-road treatment, meaning softer suspension, a kickstand, skid plate, different final gearing, and 18” rear wheel and Dunlop AT81 tires. Click play and see how we put both of these new machines through its paces.

Awesome video, hopefully you guys do a good 'X' shootout between Yamaha, Honda and Kawi now that all have their cross-country lines!

Good review. I DON'T know why every discussion video feel the NEED to have 'music' playing 'a long', leave the music OFF! It gets in the way of listening to the bike or the discussion.

7:18 you can see the kickstand come down. That could be dangerous. They need to find a way to secure that like KTM does with their rubber stretchy retainer clip.

That suspension looks really plush. Wish I could test ride

If they had a 6 speed and slightly larger tank I'd try it!

Small tank for a cross country bike

    • @mxfreaks

@@cuzimaluzer777 yeah but to be fair I bet 99% of ppl who would buy these bikes would run out of gas before the bike does unless on super easy terrain, its pretty amazing how far you can go on a small tank but it it wouldn't have been that much harder for them to add a bigger tank

why do some bikes have xc in the name and others just have x

These two bikes fall a little short of the competition.
No lights or digital speedo(Trail Tech or similar), a small fuel tank ( IMS make a larger one), a 5 speed box ( are we meant to rev the crap out of it every time?) to an otherwise great looking package. The mounts are there to fit the headlight off the KLX and a LED taillight would be so simple.
KTM/Sherco/Beta can do it and charge a little more for a similar package without having to go through a heap of modifications.

i think youre comparing the new kx xc models to the wrong bikes. theyre meant to be direct competitors with the crf rx, yz fx, ktm xcf, etc. theyre designed for harescramble type off road racing. none of these bikes have headlights or speedos. i do wish theyd put a bigger fuel tank though. and the 5 speed tranny should be perfectly fine for a 450 race bike. more gears doesnt automatically equal better. its all in the power curve of the engine and gearing to keep the bike in the meat of that power curve

I want to see how the 250x stacks up against the yz250fx. I owned a brand new crf 450 in 04 till about 2013. Im torn between getting the 250 to be less tiring and more fun, but afraid once I get it I'm gonna wish I got the 450 for that blast of power!

Rode em both last weekend. KX rips off the bottom and has low-end TQ that feels similar to a 350, but then it dies off pretty quick up high. The Yammy is more tractable down low, hits less hard, then screams through the mid-upper range.
On hill-climbs, you could tractor up some hills in low-mid 3rd gear on the KX, where the YZ really needs to be in 2nd screaming at the mid-top. Both are fun, I think the YZ might be a little faster overall, but the KX feels more powerful on the seat dyno.

Whats the difference between last 21 xc and this 21 X?

The 250 got the hydro clutch but I heard it didn't get the same spring clutch that the 450 has, I heard it's still on the older traditional setup

What makes the suspension softer in the x? The damping on the clickers or totally different springs? Wondering if I could take the mx kx450 with stock springs as a 210 pound rider (heavier rider on stock springs) and just soften up the damping on the clickers and still get the softer feel for desert racing on the mx bike?

Do these have heavier flywheels than the MX bikes?

  • @bajadrifter

Don't these bikes have a cramped, hard-to-service air filter compartment? Enlarge the airbox, give it a 6-speed trans and 2.5-gallon tank and these bikes would fly off showrooms floors

I saw last weeks teaser from Kawasaki and got a big ol boner thinking about a KDX 300.... horribly disappointed.

Kawasaki missed the mark on these bikes. The tank is an MX tank (see yamaha or KTM), the skid plate is a joke and nothing more than an MX skid plate (at best), no flag handguards, and are WAY behind the times on mapping adjustments available to consumers.

    • @ninja1970fin

Mine came with hand guards but I agree the skid plate is not ideal, oil change requires taking it off unless you drill a whole to it yourself. aXp skid is much better.
