Okay this is what I think happened:
I keep seeing people ask if she was angry or disgusted. I don't think so though, Heather wasn't disgusted she wanted the hat boy to be happy. After everything they went to a party and ,imma call him crush boy, gets drunk, she realizes and also realizes that he keeps trying to get touchy so she decides to get hat boy and take crush boy home, but leaves before they get to the room so that hat boy and crush boy are alone. When they are alone crush boy starts to get touchy and hat boy keeps trying to leave because he knows hes drunk and isn't thinking straight, thats why we keep hearing I wish you were sober" at this part, but he is to madly in love to leave so he stays and they have sex, but crush boy sees hat boy as heather as indicated at the part where you see hat boy in his eyes and then he fades into heather. When heather is going back home she looks at his window and sees hat boy and crush boy kissing, she started to cry because she is in love with crush boy and now she was the one who wanted to be the hat boy insead of the hat boy wanting to be her, so in frustration and heart break she cut her hair to look like him. That or maybe, and i doubt, but maybe to look different so crush boy falls out of love with her and starts falling for hat boy. The only reason i think maybe that is because she takes off crush boys sweater and then cuts her hair, so maybe thats a way to show shes separating from him.
This is all a guess tho. The reasons i think this is because at the beginning she looks at crush boy and then over at hat boy and smiles, indicating "lets take him to a party" and then starts dragging hat boy to the party. When they are there she hugs hat boy because hes still teary from earlier, he says 'why is she so nice.' Shes being nice because she wants him to be happy. Then she walks over to crush boy and taps his shoulder, i think she was ganna have him walk over to hat boy with her but hes drunk and after that anytime you see heather or crush boy together she smiles but then frowns, because shes in love and like it but also feels guilty because hat boy is in love with him too and she knows what shes about to do, and it hurts. Shes separating her self from him. Just a guess 🤷🏼

My take on this is that the guy was completely wasted and the boy with the beanie is so inlove with him that even if the guy is only wanting him because hes wasted he is willing to take what he can get even if its only for one night. With the girl, there were brief scenes where she looked unhappy with the guy and when she cut her hair i pieced it together and figured she realized she was into girls; though that could be completely off and she could be trying to be more like the boy in the beanie.
I believe that at the beginning, heather was being nice at the particular because she realized both beanie boy and her boyfriend would be much happidr together, which is why she looked upset: she didn't want to leave him. Her boyfriend was really wasted so when beanie boy took him home, his kindness and warmth confused the other dude into thinking he was heather, so he kept trying to show his love. Beanie boy knew it was wrong, so he was trying to push the guy away, but his feelings took over. Even though heather got what she thought would be best, she wasstill upset and hoped she could do the same, so she cut her hair to look like beanie boy
