Spiritually as well!! You connect with God in SO many ways as you dig in His soil, in connection with the Sun, the elements and living microorganisms in the soil that help us achieve the feeding of our bodies. Spiritually therapeutic ✨️ .

This brought tears to my eyes. I had to retire early due to disability. My garden had suffered while I was unable to tend it. I felt depressed by my physical condition and by the condition of my formerly beautiful garden. When I received an insurance settlement, I had raised beds that are handicap accessible built in my garden. Being able to spend time in my garden has helped my mental health so much. It has also been a wonderful way to bond with my grandchildren, who are always so enthusiastic about the vegetables that they helped grow. I give extras to my friends and neighbors, and that makes them happy, too.

I was on a jury for a domestic violence murder case 3 years ago. I was told not to talk to anyone. That was when I decided to build 3 raised beds and finally start a garden. It was a blessing because I had that started when covid happened and I was so busy with gardening that I welcomed the lockdowns.

My Dad was a Master Gardner who completed suicide on a cold Feb. day. It’s a long story - but I believe in my heart that if he had been able to hang on just a couple more months, his beloved love for his gardens might have lifted him out of his despair. We bought the house from the estate and now we reap what he sowed. 2 beautiful acres of perennial gardens. I grew up in this house and at the age of 17 said I would never ever pick another green bean if my life depended on it. Ha!
Little did I know, at 60 years old, here I am.
I miss my Dad and Mom very much and am eternally grateful they taught me what they did.
I just wish Dad had held on a little longer so he could keep alive his spirit and I could have helped him enjoy more time. Hugs to all who suffer.

How precious 😍. I can add a story here. My mother had a personal care home. She loved her Elderly she cared for. On the property, long past, my grandfather had planted apple trees. Varieties for cooking. One day, a patient, resident, told my mother " those apples on the ground are just rotting, I'm going out there to get them." My mother and she picked up basket fulls. My mother took instructions from the patient, along side her, helped cook up the best apple pies. The patient was an Alzheimer's patient. And she never skipped a beat on how to cook her perfect pie she had done before her illness. 😋 I couldn't agree more with your video. Thanks Scott. 😊

Great video Gardner Scott. I don't work out, can't stand it, but I am in the garden EVERY DAY from when the seedlings go in until the snow flies. When I'm out there I can forget everything about a crazy and stressful day - my plants and crops are the only things I think about when working and tending my "farm."
Growing a garden is, I think, one of the best things you can do for physical and mental health in so many ways.

I have treatment-resistant depression, and working in the garden is one of the few things that alleviates it. I was overweight for many years, but finally managed to lose most of it thanks to all the digging, landscaping, and construction I did for the garden. I've been trying to eat less meat and more fruits and vegetables, for health and environmental reasons, and the garden has certainly helped with that. I'm a writer and illustrator, and I consider the garden to be one of my most significant creative achievements, especially now that the autumn flowers are in full bloom.

I know it sounds silly, but I used to hate to mow the lawn, but since I began to use the grass clippings to enlarge and mulch my garden, I look at mowing as harvesting the grass for my garden. It has change my attitude toward mowing and actually taken away most of the stress anticipating it. Since retiring, now that I can spend more time in the garden, and outside in general, I feel much better and less stressed than ever.

Not to put too dark a point on it, but there are times from before my kids were born that the only reason im around today is because nobody else was around to weed and water my grandmother's flower beds for her. I couldn't stand the thought of my grandmother having to lose her grandson and then watch her flowerbeds die. So I stayed on this side of the dirt. That was 30 years ago and Im really glad I did.

Dear Scott. I really enjoy your channel about your garden. This year I tried my hand at gardening. To my surprise I put a pep in my step. I started getting up earlier to see how my garden was doing and to water it. It gave myself something to look forward to every day. Although I did many things wrong and which I did few things right. It did make my mood better. My cat Raven loves to sit on my lap when I water. The one thing I would like to learn is to harvest seeds from carrots. Cauliflower, Broccoli, cabbage
    And other plants too😊

    Very true
Our gardens are such a boost to us.
I used to suffer quite badly in the winter months, last year we decided to try to keep growing through the dark wet winter and we saw an enormous difference in me. So we knew there was no question… I need to grow over winter again… having greenery in the garden and greenhouse makes a huge difference.

Praying reduces blood pressure and overall anxiety! I ride my horse and just get lost in the beauty of the woods and my surroundings and forget all the craziness of the world! I feel the same thing when I am out in the garden! 💖🙌

Its funny, I think I went about it backwards because I found God partly because of gardening. Long story short it showed me that we have far too much beauty and perfect engineering on this earth for it to be anything but. Now I thank Him every single day and night for what we’ve been blessed with. It’s like my heart is overflowing with joy and gratitude every time I’m in the garden. It’s been quite a spiritual journey.

Hello Gardner Scott. I can attest to this statement that gardening does indeed make one feel really good about themselves! When I am inside my gardens and around my fruit plants, I find a certain internal peace and well being come over me. Then there is the added satisfaction of sharing my produce with family and friends. Really makes me feel good all over! I love gardening!

Totally agree... I spend so much time in my garden... early morning coffee, have many meals outside when weather permits. Getting my hands in the dirt, planting and harvesting what I grow is so rewarding. Animals too can give a sense of peace and purpose, I love my cat she is my constant companion and I love to sit and watch my chickens and of course the eggs and fertilizer for the garden is an awesome bonus. Sending much love to all gardeners from Australia. 🥰🐈‍⬛🐓🌻

Agreed!!! My greenhouse and garden are my happy places - no matter how much work I need to do, or how sore/tired I am, I still love my time in the garden - and can push past physical limitations way more with gardening then for any other task!!!
Excellent point also about the benefits of the garden for children & individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities - I work in the I/DD community and many of the group homes we visit have garden spaces for the residents to enjoy at whatever level they are able to. Some might have a container garden on a patio, a small raised bed area, or even a large area of yard dedicated to their garden - each benefits the individuals there in many ways!

For me, it’s being connected to the environment. I care for the birds, leave up natives for them even if they aren’t planned. I’m always watching the weather to see when it will rain, what the temps will be. I feel more connected to tangible reality. I can change my surroundings to benefit my family, neighbors, and animals.
I love breathing the fresh air, getting sunlight, smelling the clouds, getting some exercise.
There’s so much to describe that makes working in the garden so enjoyable. Also, seeing things grow, being a steward of the land.
It’s very rewarding to nurture life.

Hello Gardener Scott. I have always found that tending my garden was therapeutic in that it helped deal with stress and just helped me relax. And I enjoy getting close to the earth - I don't even wear gloves because I want to FEEL the earth. And maybe the plants do better because I actually touch them when planting. The last two years I have not been able to work the garden due to shoulder injuries and I can tell in so many ways. Even my respiratory health is impacted because I am not spending time outdoors being exposed to all the pollen. :) My hayfever has been bad the last two years. Next Spring I have some repair work and some expansion to do - maybe even rearranging where the beds are. But I plan to be full on in the garden next year.

I listened to this video twice because it was moving and made me feel good. Even brought tears to my eyes, too. (Not the first time that has happened while watching a Gardener Scott video). It is also moving and even more tear-jerking to read the comments.
What is so awe-inspiring is that no one seems to be able to pinpoint exactly what is happening in a garden that lifts the mood so much. A few things are obvious, such as more exercise, more sunshine, healthier eating, etc. But even all of that combined doesn't seem sufficient to explain the profound effects. I believe the plants and other organisms are actually doing something to interact with us, which can't be measured with scientific tools.

Thanks. I didn't include it in the video, but there are some studies that possibly show interaction with some soil organisms do create positive health effects in people.

Interesting, I thought gardening would add stress to keep track of everything that needs to get done…but this convinced me the benefits have a more powerful effect

I think it’s all in how you look at it. With gardening tasks it seems easier to take the emotions out of it and look at it more logically. It’s more of a cause and effect thing. Secondarily, if it is too overwhelming or there’s just a lot going on in life, just let most of the beds rest for season and focus on a smaller space. If you watch and observe, the garden can teach you some of the most important things about life.

Of course gardening does your getting fresh food without chemicals that all stores have on and in food they sale regardless of what they say doesn't because if you contact the company it's from they won't answer if you ask the right questions. Like if they say grown organic ask them if it was harvested without any chemicals before and after . Don't fall for the wording they use to mislead you. It's very calming, your also getting grounding and energy from having your hands in the soil. Smh at the dishonesty of these companies. God Bless y'all

i agree and that's why I hate winter so much. Winter always depresses me, no trees, no birds, no gardening. Such a long dreary season.

having gone through a ugly divorce and fighting with the ex over the children the past 4 years, my garden is the source of peace to me. Though I wish i lived in a more cooler environment though. Cant take the extreme heat these days in my 7b zone

I'm a mess. Years ago I would garden from dawn to dusk. My daughter even used to call me tanning mom because I was always so tan from the sunlight.
Then my husband and I bought land. I told him I wanted to move my smaller trees and shrubs over to the property because they were stems when I had bought them, and I couldn't find these at local nurseries. He reluctantly moved them. This wasn't like him to be reluctant to help, but I hadn't put the puzzle pieces together yet.
Before I learned he wanted out of our marriage, he literally destroyed my once beautiful 'temporary' garden that I had created while we had been waiting to build on the land. He let the brush engulf and drop seed inside them by not weedwacking, and when he would weedwack, he was no longer careful. He hacked one shrub in half, and one slowly turned into a few stems, which he later mowed over. Also, since he didn't weedwack regularly, what I call 'hay' would eventually cover the branches. Two trees are dead. Shrubs that once were all the same shapes and sizes are no longer so. All that's left has mold covering the bark and leaves. Landscaping bricks and stones that I had lugged over myself and had organized are now tossed everywhere in the brush.
We separated (permanently), and I ended up building on the land. In the winter I stare at the graveyard at the top of the hill. Sometimes I cry. In spring I walk to the top of the hill, lose all motivation, and go back inside. It's like ground zero.
I've managed to plant a few trees and shrubs, new ones, and a few suckers I was able to salvage from one of my favorite shrubs at the top of the hill before he mowed over it. But I'm older now, so I can't dig entire beds as I go, just circles, especially in this soil. The few trees and shrubs I have planted, he's already ruining. I feel like everything I accomplish is quickly bulldozed by him. I have seen my mental and physical health deteriorate ever since he took my garden from me.
As a side note, plants have electromagnetic fields, as do humans. When you prune a plant, for instance, within 8 minutes it gives off a measurable current, something author Dr. Robert O. Becker referred to as the 'current of injury'. So when you are out in the garden pruning and planting, I truly believe what you are feeling are healing frequencies. Even my cat runs to a plant awaiting the soil that I bring inside to prune and clean up. Somehow he 'knows' it's alive. I believe he senses its electromagnetic field.
Wish me luck trying to find that gardening 'spark' again. I don't garden small. I like lots of trees, shrubs, flowers, rocks, landscaping stones, pebbles, bricks, stepping stones, and bird feeders. But I feel so overwhelmed and depressed, and now I have osteoporosis, so it's even harder to motivate myself to revive my passion for gardening. Sounds silly, but even in the winter I would think about what those bare trees were doing. They weren't sleeping. Their trunks were expanding, roots creeping under the soil to support the next season's growth.
It's fall now, and I am desperately trying to get at least some of the plants I bought back in spring in the ground. I need prayers. This soil is fighting me. Also, I think I fractured my left ribs when I fell about a month ago.

I'm confident you will find the spark again. With the many challenges you've had and continue to have, recognizing the single, small successes can help. One day at a time. One plant at a time. Before you know it, you will be surrounded by the big garden you love.
