- Saturday 11th May 2024 saw Ex GWR 4-6-0 'Castle' Class, No.7029 'Clun Castle' reprise its starring role hauling the legendary 'The Great Western Railway 1Z48' - running between Plymouth and London Paddington.
The tour marked 60 years since 'Clun Castle' achieved the then-fast-ever non-stop steam-hauled run between Plymouth to Bristol Temple Meads in 1964 - only bettered by sister 'Castle', No.5043 'Earl of Edgcumbe' during the 50th anniversary recreation in 2014. Sadly, the challenging Devon banks foiled a reprised record run, with No.7029 ‘Clun Castle’ stalling on Hemerdon bank (due to dragging brakes on the coaching stock), thus requiring assistants from British Rail Class 47, No. D1755.
Captured in superb sunshine, we see No.7029 ‘Clun Castle’ as she sweeps along the glorious Devon coastline at Dawlish with first leg of the day from Plymouth to Bristol Temple Meads.

A Great Western Castle with chocolate and cream coaches running along the Devon Coast.Time Stands Still on occasions like this.
Classic Views only spoilt by the diesel unfortunately attached at the rear but that's life 😂great shots especially as Clun Castle seems in a hurry!!
This is why the Steam Locomotive and Railways endure because both enhance the landscape and something about them just pulls at the emotions Classic British scenery enhanced by a machine.

Oh, yeah! That old girl hasn't forgotten how lift up her skirts and kick up her heels! I imagine that fireman was shoveling coal for all he was worth! As always, a great video and setting.

Saw this at Langstone Rock, nearly got bowled by 1V44.... In fact I did, but the bowlage wasn't major, I still got the main steam loco.

Dragging brakes seems to be most likely, so no fault of the loco. Certainly looked most splendid there
Indeed, it's been reported that branches from the lineside had caught some of the butterfly clips on the braking system on the stock
How many coaches are there 123456789 don't no but it will always have its friend dezel don't no how to spell sumtines but still very good 😊

As stated in the description, it was found to be an issue with the coach braking system, which had be triggered by lineside foliage
