I need step by step. I have just started canning in the last couple of months. God has provided all the apples I can pick for free! So Im doing what I can to can all I can...lol
Thats how I peel and core-slice my apples. I use salt to put my apples in, the lemon juice leaves a tangy flavor and the salt dosen't, and the salt keeps them looking better. I put mine in a bowl like yours and use 1/8 tsp. salt. Then I wash them in another bowl with fresh water, when ready to jar them. I get my brine syrup hot almost boiling when I fill the jar with apples and have my water bath canner boiling ready for the jars.
I’m so loving your videos! I was gifted 2 1/2 bushels of apples. The freeze dryer is running non-stop. I’ve canned applesauce and pie filling. What do you use these for? Also, can you use plain water or must it be a syrup?
Great highly informative explanation. Have a glut of apples this year on our tree so will be following your methods closely here Wales UK Good luck and good canning!
@@artofcreationhomestead I don't know the variety but it is a prolific cropper of (dessert type) apples. I'm going to try and use a lot more this year, a lot have sadly ended up in the compost in the past. I'll be making a few gallons of apple wine and try my hand at apple vinegar too. Good luck to you thanks.
How do you prevent them from floating upwards as you're adding the syrup? I hot packed the other day, and the apples floated and made it difficult to get proper headspace.
I was given 2 bushels of Jonagold apples. I'd like to try to water bath them in big slices like you did in your very informative and easy to follow video. Will I end up with a jar of mush?
First that is an amazing gift to be given. And next I have never had this recipe come out to be mush because the apples do most of the cooking in the water bath process.
Do you have to use a sweetener? I want to do this to preserve apples for my parrot that should not have sugar. Also if you use honey versus sugar gown much honey do you use?
My first time watching your channel. Very informative for those of us who don't know about canning. Do you think we could use Stevia, instead of sugar?
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind works. Yes, you can most definitely us Stevia in this. You can use any natural sweeteners honey, maple syrup, maple sugar, or stevia. But I would not recommend the chemical based sugar substitutes.
That is a good question. I've never used it before in water bath canning. I thought it was only for when you where doing a double layer of smaller sized jars.
There are so many good uses for them. They make wonderful apple cobbler and apple dumplings. You can also thicken the syrup and use them for pies. Because they are already cooked you can use them as a short cut to a lot of apple recipes and even in apple cakes and fried apple pies. I even like to use them as cooked apples to eat with homemade biscuits or mash them up and use them as applesauce.
Thank you so much for watching. The jar lifters that I use are spring loaded and the end that I am picking up the jars with is curved to wrap around the mouth of the jar and hold it very securely. If I turn them the other way they would not even fit around the jar or hold the jar secure.
Thank you so much!! Just canned our first batch of apples!
I literally went through 4 different video's and couldn't complete them. You are amazing! No wasted time, no details left out. Perfect!
Thank you so much for this comment. I'm so glad I was able to help.
Great explanation on blade adjustment and apple types!
Thank you so much for watching.

Thank you so much for watching. What type of apples do you grow? I think you are probably our first comment from Wales.

Can I use just water in this recipe?

I’m sure your not to use metal bowls for acidity lemon juice. It breaks down correct?
Do you need to warm your jars before loading the hot syrup
Can I can apples in just hot water?

what about Wolf River apples, are they good for preserving?
Yes indeed. They are a pie apple so they should work really well for canning

Any idea how much maple syrup would be equal to the amount of sugar?
How much sugar when you're only using 5lbs?
do you rinse the lemon water off the apples or just drain them
I just drain it off.
What if you don’t have a plate for the top. Any suggestions.

FYI. You might want to reverse the way you hold the jar lifter.
That said, this is a great tutorial. Making slices for the first time today.

Been canning forever. Never saw a lifter like the one you use. Neat.
How many pounds of apples to the 8 quarts? I thought you said 20 pounds, but at the end of the video I think I heard 12.
Can you spell out that secret ingredient cause I cant understand what you are saying. Thanks...the one ur mother used.
Do you mean the secret ingredients in the apple butter?
@@artofcreationhomestead Yes please
Delicious would not be a great apple for a pie. I thought they were eating ones. My daughter tried to make a pie with some and they do not cook.
