I think the minimal presence of Elena left a lot of breathing room for these two and the show became what it was always meant to be: a show about two vampire brothers who can’t stop saving each other from their messes
The relationship dynamics are quite interesting. Stefan loved his brother more than he did anyone else and was willing to sacrifice his own life and happiness for him, as well as his other relationships. He could have had a future with Elena but he chose to give that up to save Damon. Damon would have died for Stefan too but was never willing to give up Elena. In that sense, it was fitting that Damon ended up with Elena and Stefan sacrificed himself to make that possible even if Damon was ready to give up his life for his baby brother as well.

In the tie scene Damon says stefan is 10(cause father is incapable of human emotions and you're 10). So the scene where their father burn Damon's hand Damon is 12 (he tells his mother,"Try being 12 and helpless.")and stefan is 5. So it all makes sense.. Their age is told in the scenes.
