    So "Every Released ABBA Song" is finally completed in 2009 leaving a music-based project shaped void in my brain. Should I do "Every Released Roxette Song" now? Queen? Blondie? Belinda Carlisle? Talking Heads..? Maybe for the moment I'll just look into the Andersson-Ulvaeus-Rice musical Chess; I know very little about that for a fan. I should really find some more Gemini too. "You Have To Be There"; this is a masterpiece. And this "Fait Accomplit" is not what I was expecting either...
    An ABBA fan died and an Andersson-Ulvaeus fan stole his identity. This is the result: an obsessively compiled complete list. I hope.
    I owe thanks to many.

    This video was really good! Benny Andersson will probably be remembered as Bach, Mozart and Beethooven in the future. Björn Ulvaeus is a good musician as well and I love his songs together with the Hootenanny Singers. And he became an good text writer. "Kristina från Duvemåla" was such a lovely musical. Respect to them both! I hope the people of the future tomorrow will se a statue of these men. "Bra gjort Björn & Benny!"

      Hootenanny Singers only made covers. I actually think Björn don't have any song with the music credited to him solely.

    This is one of the best series of all the many many ABBA-related videos that is uploaded on TH-cam. Thank you - and it's great that you have not just have 5 seconds of every tune. Benny Andersson is a melodic genius. I would love to have "Like you used to do", and "She will love you" sung with the Abba girls voices and with a more modern arr.

      Thanks for your support. In order to minimise issues, I've kept the song samples limited to 10% or 30sec. It's not fool proof, but it is a fair use rule of thumb.

      Bjorn wrote No Time for his band The Hootenanny Singers the year before they teamed up. It was released on the album Many Faces/Många ansikten (one side of the LP was in Swedish and one in English) and later on the eponymous album The Hep Stars.

    Recently I discovered the song “Romeo en Juliet” on TH-cam, which was apparently recorded by Min Shaw and Lance James in 1968, and I was really surprised to read that Benny and Björn (!) are the composers of this song, because I had never heard of this piece. All I knew was that Min Shaw did a cover version of “Hasta Mañana” called “Totsiens my liefling” in 1975. Do you know more about this early work?

    • @stormapproaching
      @stormapproaching  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you appreciate my videos.
      This "Romeo en Juliet" you've found was quite a mystery. I was worried I'd missed a song! As I'm sure you're aware, google didn't help.
      I tried Carl Magnus Palm's The Complete Recording Sessions which said B&B "had not been writing much together" between Isn't It Easy To Say and A Flower In My Garden. That's a mysterious thing to say in itself, as we don't know of anything else in between, or perhaps they simply didn't write anything they wanted to record. Benny was writing mostly with Lasse Berghagen at that point, and neither Björn or Benny were even Polar producers yet. Strange then, that a South African team would source their material.
      Looking further, I noticed the credits on the record (seen on Discogs) spell Anderson with one 's'. It could be Stig! Someone assumed it was Benny, and that error has propagated to music.youtube/etc.
      So I started streaming Hootenanny Singers songs trying to find a match (I'm not that familiar with their catalogue) and sure enough found the original: Marrianne (Bengt Thomas, Björn Ulvaeus, Stig Andersson). The Viljoen who wrote Romeo en Juliet's Afrikaans lyrics could be André Viljoen, or Ollie Viljoen.

      @@stormapproaching I am totally impressed by the way you disclosed the secret, that surrounded this song! Thank you so much for your research, which you did with such a cleverness! Congratulations! Although I even know the song “Marianne”, I must admit that the similar melody lines didn’t occur to me. And to be honest, I am relieved, too, that you didn’t miss a song - your video is complete and perfect as it is!! Bravo! 👏

      @@stormapproaching OK, thanks for that information! How much do you think Björn has contributed to the music of B&B? On his own, he has very few music titles (if any) credited to him.

    • @stormapproaching
      @stormapproaching  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to isolate isn't it? At the very least, their tight feedback within their songwriting process and the respect they had for each others' input resulted in better outcomes. Björn contributed less to the music composition over the decades, but it'd be too hard to attribute a change in style that was caused by this, as any change could just as easily be attributed to Benny's maturation or the musicians they surrounded themselves with along the way.

    • @nillejoslin
      @nillejoslin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stormapproaching I agree the partnership's longevity speaks for Björn coming with at least valuable input to the song writing, and for the lyrics, we know he is a linguistic genius. Still, Björn's zero credits for music on his own is a fact.

      @@nillejoslin The seeds for ABBA were laid by Stikkan 'Stig' Anderson.
      50's-60's: expert at song arrangements, languages, melody hooks. He put Swedish popular music on the map. A musician, songwriter, sometimes performer, music management executive.
      1960: Sweden Music, publishing
      1963: Polar Music, record label founded with his business partner/producer.
      1960's: huge success. His songs/artist dominated Swedish/Scandinavia charts.
      1963: first signing The West Bay Singers, Bjorn's group. Stig named them The Hootenanny Singers. They took off. Bjorn became the principal songwriter for The Hootenanny Singers. Stig noticed his knack for producing. He took liking to Bjorn. Recognized by Bjorn's high intelligence and his language and production skills. Like Stig, Bjorn knew how to interpret english-swedish-english and mesh into a melody/hook.
      1963: Bjorn and Frida briefly met. Bjorn's group beat out Frida, which was rare in Sweden, as Frida was known for sweeping all the talent hunts since she was in grade school.
      She was a vocal centric genre vocalist. Super high vocal skills. She was no standard pop singer. She had the skills of a classically trained vocalist. Mastered diaphragmatic breathing, etc.. emotive and technically perfect. She is a songwriters dream. She would later become the ABBA member that had all the pull (1971-72).
      1966: Benny and Bjorn met on the road, literally! The Hep Stars and Hootenanny Singers cars were passing each other. The groups set up a get together/party. Their songwriting partnership began.
      1968: Bjorn and Agnetha met for the first time.
      1969: Bjorn met Agnetha for the second time. They fell in love. Benny and Frida met in a restaurant in Malbo, Sweden. Frida was on tour/TV show with Charlie Norman Band/Show. Benny was with The Hep Stars. Love at first sight.
      1970: Bjorn and Benny writing and recording their first album together. They had their girl friends sing back-up on a song. BOOM! The songwriters realized they just hit the jackpot! Two opposite type singers, both with huge ranges. And they sung together lie they were siblings.
      1970-71: The dark period. During the winter of 70/71 they performed a series of cabaret shows. Huge flop.
      None of them liked it. They were not performing thier own material. Nothing clicked. Agnetha, who was a pop singer, was not used to live environments and had some issues.
      All four were nationally known, so the shows were reported on in the papers.
      Frida, who had a stellar reputation was concerned. She left the foursome. The foursome was done. No future ABBA. Frida went in tour with someone else. And she continued to fulfill her EMI Sweden solo contract obligations (1967-72).
      mid-1971: Stig Anderson Polar Music had all his ducks in a row except No Frida. She was the groups professional vocalist and natural front and center performer entertainer pro.
      He hired Bjorn and Benny as Polar Music house producer's after Stig's business partner/producer died of cancer.
      Bjorn and Agnetha were married.
      Rutger Gunnarsson was one of Stig's Polar Music musicians. But he was much more than a bass player. Arranged for strings and horns. Could read and write music notation.
      A huge get by BB and Stig. Stig had Michael Tretow, recording engineer. He had hired Gorel Johnsen-Hanser in 1969. She learned fast under Stig. She became his secretary and then promoted to VP Polar Music. She was also the personal manager to the core four. If Stig was Polar Music brains, and Gorel was Polar Music's backbone.
      1971-72: EMI Sweden had big plans for Frida. They wanted her to extend her solo contract (1967-72). Stig Anderson/Polar Music wanted Frida under Polar Music as a solo artist and for her to rejoin the group.
      Frida was free agent and understood the business. So did Stig obviously.
      Frida knew her value. She was also street smart and book smart. A good business mind and a stickler on the details.
      1972: Stig/Polar Music and Frida struck a deal after Stig offered her a sweet deal. Frida signed a solo Polar Music contract after her EMI Sweden contract was fulfilled. She also agreed to rejoin the group. Soon after Stig named them ABBA.
      Part of her deal was the 'Frida Ensam' (Frida Aline) project, 1974-75. 'Frida Ensam' was a big critical and commercial success. Frida got her usual great reviews from the vocal critics, etc...
      Ensam spawned 'Fernando'. A huge solo hit for Frida.
      For ABBA's english language 'Fernando', Bjorn re-wrote the lyric. It became ABBA's most successful #1 hold on major popular chart. #1 for 14 consecutive weeks on Australia charts. It was also massive in Latin countries.
      The Fernando/Arrival era put ABBA into orbit. They could do no wrong.
      All this started with Stig's vision to get Swedish artist heard outside of Sweden/Scandinavia.
      In 2010, Anni-Frid Lyngstad at the RockNRoll Hall of Fame, told the world, that Stig was a great guy and because if him, we are standing here tonight. Good on Frida!
