Your videos are extremely well made. 5 stars and a subscriber today. In particular, I found the repetitive, multi speed tutorial much more beneficial than hearing someone speak for ten minutes. Great job!
rushyeskansas, This is excellent !! I have been playing since I was 12 and I am now 53.. I bought the music book when this was on the radio continuously(The 80's). The solo was not in there. I did the same thing with the Styx music but no solo... I have spent a lot of time here on your UTube video... You have helped me a lot... Thanks Darryl
@phaeton1958: you are very welcome Darryl ... I am always glad when I can help a bit with my videos ... that`s why I made them. I know about the problem with the songbooks, so I preferred to rely on my ears :))) THANX for the nice comment! greetz from Brazil ... Richie
Wow man!!! I love your tutorials. I´m very grateful for your kindness to share these with all of us. You´re an excellent musician and a great teacher. Thanks from Mexico.
Awesome tutorial you nailed it! We just put this back in the set after 2 years not playing it and your video helped immensely!Keep up the great work on these timeless classics!
Thanks a lot Keith ... that's what I made it for and I bet you will pull it off like a pro ... knowing about your Smokin' skills! :))) thank you for the nice comment!
... when you have the first sequence up to the speed you want, add the next sequence and so on until you have the whole thing in an accurate speed. thats how i use to learn difficult parts. Don´t give up, you will make it!!!
Dude! This was fantastic.. I never really listened to all of your channel until this morning. I used to play this back in the day. Our piano parts differ slightly, the Hammond parts almost identical but this solo shines! I was never able to put it all together when we played live, just the highlights. I am very impressed!
You've got chops buddy... Very nice!!! And one of the best keyboard tutorials I've seen on here yet!!! I've been wanting to learn this tune for a while, so yeah... Could you please repost part 3? That would be awesome... Thanks.
Heey bro, could you upload part 1 and 3 again plz? i really like these tutorials and would love to learn the missing parts ( 2 and 4 were awesome) thx YOU ROCK!
i said it already but i really dont mind sayng again Man That the real thing man! Great! Just great really, and on top of everything it is a TUTORIAL! awesome! Da-lhe Richie
@oldmanmike89: hey Mike, thanks for the nice comment. I am using especially for the solo part a VST plugin from Native Instruments called B4 II. It is a simulation of the legendary Hammond B3. For part 1-3 of the tutorial i am using a patch preset of my Korg V3 called "Rotary Organ" which i modified a bit of course! hope that helped you! rockin' Greetz from Brazil!!!
Thanx man! I really like the organ sound of my Korg, very close to the CX3, that i had before, too! About the PC2 i cannot say nothing, because i never played it. But for this Tutorial, i used the B4 plugin by Native Instruments! thank you for the comment and for subscribing ... keep rockin'
@Cast412, thank you David, I couldn´t imagine that I can still impress you. Thought you pull this off for ages, in fact it´s not that difficult to play, only to learn it by ear note for note was the problem.
I am using a VST plugin (virtual instrument) from Native Instruments called B4 II. It is a simulation of the legendary Hammond B3. Thanx for commenting!
Great tutorial videos. I just found these a couple of days ago and started to sit down tonight to learn the parts. Unfortunately it looks like videos #1 and #3 have been pulled. Any chance you'll ever get them back up? I'd like to see the exact chords and syncopations you're using in the opening riff and the chorus. Thanks for sharing.
hey rush, nice work. a real time saver for me. question; what sort of technology do u use to help reverse engineer this stuff? like to slow down parts or filter out other instruments to isolate the passage your after? my experience ended way back using vinyl on turntable at 16 and graphic eq. its been awhile. there must be better techno these days to decode this stuff. especially heavy piano textures. your expertise is greatly appreciated!!! thanx
+tarkus 00 Hey Tarkus ... thank you for the nice comment. There are different ways to go when it comes to isolate the parts I want to learn. Slowing down is one of them. I am using my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), in my case Cubase. There is a funtion called "Time stretch" which allows you to slow down the audio without changing the pitch. Most DAWs (Protools, Reaper, Reason, Ableton, Logic, Sonar ....) nowadays offer this functionality. One other way is equalizing the track (within the DAW) to hear better the instrument you want to concentrate on. Sometimes I am also using existing MIDI files of the songs I want to learn from the internet. Some are really good and you can even learn your part note by note or generate partitures. Others aren't that good but at least you get a basic idea of the song structure and the harmonisation. ... hope that could help a bit. greetz from Brazil ... Richie
hey Rich, thanks so much for responding so soon. surprised me! my son uses FL studio and i asked about that. havent had DAW experience yet but hope to learn. still old school here. it really bothers me to not get the score right. a lot of the beauty and genius of an artist is in the subtle details and you also learn about their personality as well. (by the way, big fan here of your racers down there: CastroNeves, Kanaan, awesome!)
After almost 4 years, 35600 views and 115 positive ratings, I got finally one negative rating this month from a user in Venezuela! I didn´t expect that it would take that long. It´s just a pity that this user didn´t post a comment or maybe a link of his video doing it better :))))
In fact, i had a BX3 (it´s a double CX3) .. first of all, it was too big and too heavy to transport and second, i needed a keyboard with more possibilities! more sounds, simply more modern! but i loved the sound of the BX3!
for getting this up to speed, first of all you need a bit of patience and a lot of practice. as you already mentioned, this solo is not that easy! so you cannot expect to play it in one day ... neither did I. Do the exercises as i showed from 5:20! cut this difficult part in logical sequences and practice always from the beginning of this part ....
dude, the solo is crazy hard compared to the rest of the song. I just learned the chorus part and perfected the transition from verse to chorus. i'm working on the solo, but the 'blues scale' part keeps getting me. Can you write a fingering?
I practiced this song by your video. I haven't sheet music.buti can play this song. Ha ha! Thank you so much. Now, i want to play piano another song. Do you know this song 'colors' by black pumas. ^^ please let me show this song tutrial. I m sorry iam bad english
Thanks for the nice comment, I am glad that my video could help you to play this song. Unfortunately I do not know the song colors by black pumas. but I will check it out. Anyways at the moment I am not making any tutorials ... sorry!
k, i got what was bugging me. I can play the first two parts of the solo pretty well, and i've got the notes (and the fingerings thnx) for the part 2:12 to 2:19, but i can't get the timing right, it always comes out off. I don't know how i'm ever going to get this up to speed
I already played 99, but it´s been a long time ago! Neverthelesse i saw a good cover here in youtube and he even offers the sheetmusic for free on his blog! Look for channel satinbeaus! thanx for the comment!
Hi, thanks for the comment. In fact I was using a hammond plugin from Native Instruments, I think it was called vintage organs or B4. Nowadays I am using my Korg Kronos patches for organ sounds.
You're correct, Melinda....there are other parts of the solo that are different as well, but like you said, a good starting point. He did a great job of laying it all out, doing it fast, & then very slowly. I found the piano parts during the verses especially helpful.
Wow, great stuff man! Where do you live? Wanna jam? No really, I'm a drummer from Paradise California. I play all up and down the West Coast and I would love to connect with you! I have tons of videos from different bands over the years here on youtube, hit me up!
Hey, thanks for the nice comment and the offer, but I live in Brazil right now. Unfortunately I didn't find any videos on your channel, would love to watch you playing too.
Hi Matteo ... I used a VST plugin called B4 II by Native Instruments. I created a customized sound especially for this solo. Unfortunately I am not using the B4 plugin anymore and I don't remember the settings, sorry.

Now THAT is the way to break down a solo! No words needed - just show me how it's played!
Thanks David, glad you like the way how I make my tutorials ... "listening" is a part of it too, no words needed, you are right! ;)
Yes, I hate those 3-5 minutes intro of just talking and then more talking
instablaster...
after playing along to the whole video i found myself playing along with the solo...sweet cheers, brilliant teaching

I am stuck trying to find the right voicing for the keyboard leads. any tips?
Hey Doc, I used an organ vst plugin to create the sound, in fact its a kind of agressive hammond sound.
Thank you so much for sharing how to play this!

that seems hard! But i will do my best at trying to learn it!

Hi, thanks for the comment. In fact I was using a hammond plugin from Native Instruments, I think it was called vintage organs or B4. Nowadays I am using my Korg Kronos patches for organ sounds.
@rushyeskansas There is none better. If there is, I have yet to see them. Del.
Super helpful starting point. Recording sounds to me like there's a B natural on the top. Not Bb...
